What’s Up At PYW?

Submitted By Paula Martel, PYW Program Director

World Affairs Council International (WACI) visits The Pittsfield Youth Workshop

The Mission of WACI is to promote the widest possible understanding of world affairs among the citizens of New Hampshire.

On Wednesday, August 20 it was a great pleasure to have a group of eight Algerians visit the Pittsfield Youth Workshop (PYW) to learn more about our knowledge and insights on the Pittsfield Teen Mentor Program and the work we are doing at PYW.

At first the meeting started off a little challenging. The group had a simultaneous interpreter that immediately converted what was being said, so listeners heard the interpretation through an earpiece - while the speaker, me, was still speaking. Usually the interpreter is in a booth but he sat at the table with us so it was kind of like hearing an echo of your own voice, but in a different language. After a bit of joking around about it I started to get comfortable and the conversation flowed very easily.

The conversation started with a brief explanation about the program, how it started, who is/was involved, how the youth get involved, program rules, training for the youth and how the program is funded. Then the Algerians had many great questions and comments about both the Mentor Program and PYW. They seemed very intrigued to hear about youth mentoring youth. Something they said they had not learned or heard about in the time they spent in the US. One of the gentlemen said, “It takes very passionate people to do what you do and I am sure that is why the program is successful.” I agreed and explained it takes many passionate people and support from the families, schools, the town and so many others around us. When the time came for them to leave there was handshakes, hugs and pictures...what a great group of caring individuals that couldn’t wait to share the information with others.

Tim Horgan, Associate Director for the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire said, “They loved the meeting.  After 3 weeks they really didn’t think they would learn anything new, but learned a lot from you.”

Elyse Harris, Program Coordinator, wrote, “They were very impressed of the success of PYW and felt inspired to start peer mentoring programs in Algeria.”

Pittsfield may be a small town, but a small town with a lot to offer!

Letter To The Editor

To the Editor ;

Last week, after a vacation in Maine, my wife and I returning to our home in Croton on Hudson in NY drove into Pittsfield for a nostalgic trip to the town where I began my teaching career in 1958 to 1960 as a physical education teacher at the high school.

The last trip to Pittsfield was for a 35th reunion. It was interesting to see the new elementary school, and the big new addition to the high school. The house we lived in at 12 Chestnut street is now a duplex, the original house probably torn down.

We remembered the Suncook River and the winter freeze when the ice flows would break up and cascade over the falls. At that time everyone in town went out to watch this spring event.

Much has changed in the town and yet much remains the same. I picked up a copy of The Suncook Valley Sun to read about town events, somehow hoping to see some familiar names of someone I knew way back in time.

I retired from teaching 20 years ago but have stayed on as the basketball coach, a job I still love. I hope to make it for two more years when I will have the opportunity to coach my grandson.

Hello to anyone who may have been one of my Pittsfield students, it was nice to return to town.

Sincerely,

Don Daubney

Cabaret For A Cure 2014

More Fun Than a Mammogram

This year’s Cabaret For Cure will be one you won’t soon forget; with songs titles such as “Somebody to Love” by Freddie Mercury, “Timeless to Me” from Hairspray sung by that infamous duo Angelo and Jean Gentile, “Carry On” by Fun and, of course, “Cabaret” the cast will quickly win your appreciation with their vocal harmonies and silly antics. We’ll also be serving up a little fun, hope, perhaps a drum solo by our adorable drummer, Jeff Fishwick and a glimpse of the Pittsfield Players’ fall musical, “South Pacific.”

If you don’t know how to have More Fun Than a Mammogram, let us show you. Walk through the Scenic Theatre doors and be treated to some gourmet refreshments; both savory and sweet, then pick up a ticket that will entitle you to raffle offerings galore. Then you will find the best seat in the house (because the Scenic Theatre has no bad seats) and be treated to an evening of music, memories, song, dance, hope, inspiration both serious and silly and leave knowing you made a difference, just by attending this fabulous event.

Raffle prizes include a handmade basket (size large!) by Stacy Davis of Davis Fuels; a Quilt by the ladies of The Dorcas Guild of Pittsfield’s First Congregational Church; a Bose Bluetooth mini sound system donated by WOKQ 97.5; a beautiful pink peony framed photograph by Susan Bleckmann; an amusing and appropriate satchel handcrafted by Pam Wilson, donated by Sergeant Richard Walter, Jr.; a gift certificate to Edible Arrangements donated by Gay-Ann Cooney; tickets to South Pacific donated by The Pittsfield Players;  tickets to Suessical the Musical donated by The Village Players; a gift certificate for a Christmas tree and decorated wreath ($75.00 value) donated by Sandy Burt and Neva Dun Farm, and more as the donations keep coming in! You can only win these items by coming to The Cabaret For A Cure on September 20.

The Cabaret was started three years ago with the generous help of our sponsors like Darrah Enterprises, Deb & Ken Jones, The Pittsfield Players and The Suncook Valley Sun. They help provide advertising, fund the licensing and sheet music, a place to rehearse and put on a show as well as the many incidentals that arise during the rehearsal and show process.

If you’re not familiar with The Cabaret For a Cure, now’s the time to check us out. The Cabaret is a fundraising adventure that shares music and stories of hope in an effort to raise money for both The American Cancer Society and The Pittsfield Players. Eighty percent of the ticket sales go to ACS while twenty percent go to The Pittsfield Players Sprinkler Fund. The raffle prize monies go directly to ACS while the refreshment donations are split 50/50 between Players and ACS.

If you are familiar with the Cabaret then you certainly don’t want to miss this one as it is ONE NIGHT ONLY, September 20 at the Scenic Theatre, 6 Depot Street, Pittsfield, NH. You will experience a night of fun and beautiful music, poignant messages, inspiring songs and pictures as well as becoming part of something so much bigger than ourselves. As one of the song lyrics goes; “When you help others, you can’t help helping yourself!”

Doors open at 6PM (general seating). Show starts at 7PM. Tickets for the show are $12.00, available at Jitters on Main Street in Pittsfield, by calling Meggin Dail at 736-8073 or at the door – but don’t wait, we tend to sell out!

TOPS News

Submitted By Terrie Azotea

We had a good meeting at TOPS this past week. To start we have a new KOPS, great job Catherine who has made her KOPS goal. Our KOPS best loser was Barbara, and TOPS best loser was Suzie. Awards were handed out for those that have lost 10 pounds. Great job ladies! Also Kudos to the rest that have had a weight loss.

We had a good program that was about “ Easy Eating Destroying Weight Loss Efforts.” If we eat our three meals a day, and two healthy snacks, we should be on our way  to our weight loss goal. A lot of times we do meaningless eating and that can cause us to be overweight. Some tips were given to us so that we could stay on track, like chewing gum, call a friend, read a book or play some cards. All in all we need to keep busy, go for a walk, or keep your hands busy.

We are a low cost, good support weight loss group and if anyone is interested in joining us and making some new friends, come on out on Tuesday night to the Berakah on Fairview Rd. in Pittsfield at 5:30 for weigh-in and at 6:30 for our meeting. Any questions please call Janis White at 603-491-5532 or Claire Coll at 435-7271. Hope everyone has a good week and see you all lighter next week!
