While this is only Pittsfield's second National Night Out, it is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the organization that started it all. In the first year alone 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Now, over 10,000 communities in fifty states across the nation are participating, all on the same night! National Night out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs (such as the Pittsfield Drug and Alcohol Coalition, PDAC); and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Last year the Pittsfield Police Department hosted the event where several organizations, such as Pittsfield Youth Workshop, Riverbend, PDAC and other law enforcement groups set up displays and handed out freebies to participants. There was child fingerprinting for I.D. cards and Sparky the Fire Dog arrived courtesy of the Pittsfield Fire Department via Fire Engine. Children were allowed to climb into a real police cruiser, front and back, and have their pictures taken with police officers. Once visitors completed their rounds of displays they were handed a free meal pass to get a hamburger or hot dog, chips, a piece of fruit and a dessert and drink, all donated by local businesses. This year, the Pittsfield Police needs you to participate. We are looking for community organizations and businesses that are willing to donate their time and resources to this event. "It's a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie. While the one night out is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent that kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make neighborhoods safer places throughout the year." Businesses can donate goods and services to help make the night run smoothly and economically while organizations are welcome to strut their stuff for the community to show the youth they are supported and have alternatives to the "there's nothing to do" problem. We're looking for clubs to enlist members, perhaps a DJ to donate services for the evening, games to play, giveaways, etc. Furthermore, as an offspring of National Night Out is "Project 365," an opportunity to challenge ourselves as a community and change one small part of our neighborhood to make it an even better place to live. For example; a group announces at National Night Out that they are going to clean up a small parking lot or otherwise vacant area, install a light there so crime is less likely and spruce it up to make that little corner of the world brighter. Then, they have the next 365 days to make the improvements so that by next National Night Out the group announces the completion of the project and the results. Pittsfield Column Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Conn., is pleased to announce its graduates of the Class of 2008. The University's 42nd Commencement took place May 17 and 18, 2008. Anne Dunne, of Pittsfield received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. The following local students received degrees at the 140th Commencement exercises at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, Mass., on May 17th: Jeffrey Tucker, son of Mr. David Tucker of Deerfield, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Jonathan Adam Kling, son of Mr. Paul W. Kling of Loudon, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Amanda J. Sims of Pittsfield, graduated with a B.S. in Nursing at the 115th Commencement Exercises at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, on Saturday, May 17. Sims is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Colby-Sawyer College Names Local Students To Dean's List Colby-Sawyer College has named the following local students to the Dean's List for academic achievement during the 2008 spring semester. To qualify for the Dean's List, students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours in graded courses. Katelyn Marie Drouin from Allenstown, a member of the class of 2010, is a business administration major. Ashley Marie Jones from Barnstead, a member of the class of 2010, is a psychology major. Letter To The Editor Concerning your article (Concord Monitor, 7/17/08) "PUC Weighs Largest Water Rate Hikes Ever" by Meg Heckman. I was at that meeting. Here is what I got out of it. I think Pennichuck sold our towns a false set of goods. We thought they had our interests in mind. They spent money like drunken sailors. It seems the more they spend the more they make. If these rate increases happen, we will be paying at the highest level in the state. I think the PUC will give us a fair hearing based on what I see. I've been a stoneman for 21 years. 12 T's Meet Again Submitted By Beverly Drolet The Great Room of Havenwood in Concord was the site for this year's gathering of Pittsfield's retired teachers on July 8th. Harriet Ames (at 98) was once again the "hostess with the mostest," proudly displaying collectibles and passing on stories through the rich voice of Jonas Glidden. A delicious buffet was prepared and served by Havenwood staff and enjoyed by all. Nine teachers attended: Harriet Ames, Jonas and Elaine Glidden, Mark and Sylvia Wallace, Marge Stapleton, Nancy Fogg, Connie Madison and Beverly Drolet. Plans are already in the making to expand the luncheon next year. PYW Kickball Tournament Results Photo taken by Jeff Martel On Saturday, June 28, 2008, Pittsfield Youth Workshop held a kickball tournament at Drake Field to benefit the Youth in Pittsfield.
The Tournament was won by the Kickball Dummies. Members of that team included Eric Reid (Team Captain), Scott Lessier, Scott Ferrier, Matt Briggs, Matt Beany, Nick Hollen, Mike Gooden, Steve Gooden, Jim O'Connell, and Fanuel Rod. The Dark Knights took second place. Members of that team included Ted Miner (Team Captain), Justin Miner, Norman Miner, Tyler St. George, Cori Day, Cody Day, Dominic Judkins, Joshua Tremblay, and Jill Cantara. Pittsfield Youth Workshop would like to thank all the participants and volunteers for their support. We would also like to thank Bell Brothers, Danis Market, Dunkin Donuts, Coca-Cola, and Hannaford for the food donations, S & W for the kickballs, and to EMS, Dick's Sports, The Fisher Cats, Collins Sport, and Everett Sports for the donations towards our raffle. South Pittsfield Community Center The SPCC would like to thank everyone for a very successful season. We had 4 terrific Ham & Bean suppers. Our season ended with the annual cookout/meeting at Nancy Talbot's house. There were many tasty, homemade treats for everyone and kite flying for the kids. It was wonderful, thank you Nancy. At the meeting some positions were changed, some stayed the same, President Lillian Wheeler, Vice President Jill Metcalf, Secretary Nancy Talbot, Treasurer Pauline Wheeler and Sunshine Club Nancy Wheeler. Old and new business was discussed. The SPCC has done very successful Rotary suppers and will help support Old Home Day with a generous donation. The hot topic was work that needs to be done on the schoolhouse. Many of you may have already noticed that it is getting done! Thanks to Dan Ward and his crew. They are working hard on many needed repairs and painting. The new look is wonderful, stop by to see! Other exciting news is the services to be held at the South Pittsfield Friend's Church, July 20th, 27th and Aug. 3rd. Services at 1pm, speakers will be Rev. Henry Frost, Rev. Harold Muzzey and Rev. Ladies Aid Submitted By Joan Riel The Ladies Aid of the First Congregational Church, Pittsfield met the afternoon of July 14th in the Church Vestry. President, Freda Jones opened the meeting and Arlene Martin gave a devotional reading, "The Most Celebrated Holiday" (being the Fourth of July), written by Earle Grant for Ideals Magazine. Freda Jones read a wonderful composition "Where I Am From", written by her granddaughter, Lindsay Jones for a school assignment which was centered around happenings and family which helped mold her into who she is. Very touching. Refreshments were served and enjoyed by all those attending. During this time, many cards were signed to be sent to several members and friends who are shut in. Under old business, new officers were elected as follows: President, Freda Jones; Vice President, Louise Kenney; Secretary, Joan Riel; Treasurer, Audrey Moore. Money was voted to the church toward the Retirement Party for Rev. Charles and a sum was also voted for a Gift to him from the Ladies Aid. Several items of new business were discussed, one being the furniture in the Ladies Parlor. The room is being renovated and the question arose, what to do with the Ladies wicker furniture. No decision was reached, but refinishing it was discussed and if not feasible it would be sold. Yet to be decided. Another item discussed was the group itself. Over the years the elderly originals have passed on and the numbers are dwindling. It is time to dissolve the Ladies Aid and have those remaining become members of the Dorcas Guild. No decision was reached. It was voted to skip the August meeting, due to a very busy month for everyone. The next meeting will be held on September 8th.
