LAW UPDATE
There is a change in the Child Safety Seat Law NH RSA 265:107-a.
Effective January 1, 2014, all children under the age of 7 or under
57 inches tall (whichever comes first) are required to use a child
safety seat. This means either a child safety seat with a harness or
booster seat. The fine for a first offense violation is $50.00 and
$100.00 for subsequent violations.
John And Duncan
A Neighborhood Love Story
Submitted By Beverly Drolet
December, 2013
They
walk by our house every day, sometimes twice, all seasons and almost
in all kinds of weather. Sometimes, like today in mid-winter and
with freezing temperatures, the walks are shorter and definitely
slower, but still they amble along, John waves and gives a hearty
greeting. Duncan, a large, shaggy mix breed stops, wags his tail,
waits for a pat on the head and a conversation, long or short.
Duncan is very old and has difficulty walking but this practice has
gone on for years and he isn’t about to give it up until heaven
calls him to a different home. Sometimes, if we call out from our
doorway, Duncan refuses to budge until we cross the street and give
him that pat on the head. John laughs. Sometimes, I think, if we
didn’t cross the street, Duncan would remain in that spot until
someone else showed up to do the honors.
John lives at the top of the hill and we live at the bottom on the
outskirts of a small New England village. The walks, however, go far
beyond our hilly neighborhood and extend around and about the entire
town. John and Duncan are well known in this extensive neighborhood.
John often says that he just walks alongside Duncan who goes about
greeting old friends and meeting new ones.
On a good day in the summertime, John and Duncan have been known to
walk the entire town circumference, meandering through streets and
pathways until Duncan, assured that he has greeted everyone, lets
him know that it is time to return home.
Sometimes the stroll is repeated in early evening. Only inclement
weather stops this pair. If the day is very cold, John takes a
shorter route on the road beyond his house heading toward the
highway... not so many head pats that way, but the walk is direct
and cleared of snow. Like us, people going by in cars toot their
horns and John lifts his hand in a hearty wave keeping his eyes
straight ahead for oncoming traffic. Duncan plugs on.
John knows that one of these days will be their last walk
together... this friendly neighbor and his beloved dog.
Meanwhile, midst the hectic pace of today’s society and people
moving in and out, so many absorbed in a technological world, there
remains the devoted tradition of walking a dog, making friends and,
in the long run, giving the gift of bringing neighborhoods together.
