President Franklin Pierce
Thursday night Peter Wallner, President
of the NH Historical Society, and author of two biographies on
Franklin Pierce, presented our New Hampshire President.
President Pierce’s administration balanced the national budget, and
then reduced the national debt by 50%. He modernized the navy
by ordering six frigates to be built with the state of the art steam
powered screw propulsion. He had the lands that would become
our national railroad system surveyed, and added the southwest
corner to America: New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
Despite controversy, his administration ensured that the flood of
new Irish Immigrants had the right to be voting American citizens.
His cabinet was a diverse and talented group of men from different
parties, different religions, and different regionals (including his
able secretary of war Jefferson Davis). Yet everyone of them
worked with President Pierce for the entire four year term building
a nation and in later years had nothing but praise for our New
Hampshire president.

At noon, on Tuesdays, it’s Noon Café Bienvenue, which features a
variety of soups, salad bar fixings and café style luncheon choices.
On Wednesdays, from 12:30 - 2:00 pm it is painting lessons with
Betsey Keefe. On Fridays, Gentle Yoga is offered upstairs.
We invite you to join us for any or all of these activities at the
Pittsfield Community Center, 74 Main Street. A special
activity is planned for Wednesday, May 4th at 9:30 am “Making

transition to using cloth aprons. If we need more aprons, the
sewing project will continue on Wednesday, May 11th and May 18th at
9:30 am.
Pittsfield Youth Baseball would like to thank Skip and Marguerite
Weadick for generously allowing us to remove a pile of rocks from
their property for use at Pittsfield Athletic Park. Their generosity
and the generosity of others like them will bring the project to a
successful conclusion this July. Pictured are Larry Williams who
donated a trailer to move the rocks, and volunteers Thomas Williams,
Brandon Greenwood and Cody Newton. Thanks guys!
Flora
Perkins, formerly of Pittsfield, recently celebrated her 99th
birthday at the home of her daughter in Fayetteville, Georgia.
Many people will remember her as a teacher for many years in
Pittsfield before moving on to Concord. She was a member of
the Park Street Baptist Church where she taught the high school
Sunday school class for many years as well as being very active in
many other church organizations. Teaching was always a very
important part of her life. Even upon retirement, she
continued to substitute teach in Georgia where she would spend her
winters. Family is very important to Flora and she is the
proud great-great-grandmother (yes, that is five generations) of 4
boys, Cyrus age 8, Elias age 3, Malachi age 20 months, and Isaiah
age 7 months. Flora does not travel any more but she would
love to hear from former students and anyone else who remembers her.
Her address is: 1424 Antioch Road, Fayetteville, GA,
30215.
Letter
Dear Pittsfield Residents: On April 7th the new Planning Board
met for the first time. Members voted for a new Chairman (Ted
Mitchell) and Vice-Chairman (Clayton Wood.) Jim Pritchard was
asked to be the Board’s Recorder and he graciously accepted on a
trial basis.
It was determined that the first priority will be to
review all those ballot articles that were voted upon on March 8th.
Those that passed, to ensure proper implementation and those that
failed, to fine tune them and put them aside, ready for the next
March ballot.
Two alternates (Peter Dow and Michelle Connor) were
appointed for one year terms. If you are interested in being an
alternate on the Planning Board, please e-mail the chairman.
The
Board is determined to keep the public totally informed,
step-by-step, as they move to make the Zoning Ordinances as concise,
clear and enforceable as possible.
If you have any concerns or
questions as the year progresses, please email the chairman at
[email protected].
All concerns will be brought to the attention of the Planning Board
and discussed. You will get a direct email response.
Thank
you, Ted Mitchell, Chairman Pittsfield Planning Board
Spring
is here and Dan Schroth is at the ball park once again working on
the wall at the entrance. Pictured with him is Justin, his son.
Anyone having a few rocks laying around is urged to contact Larry
Berkson at 798-3984 and he will arrange to have them picked up for
use at the park. One, two, 10, or more would be helpful.
Women
of Rotary
The Women of Rotary April meeting was held at the home
of “Babe” Jenisch with 16 members present. After the Pledge of
Allegiance and the business meeting, the program was “Show and
Tell.” What a great idea. It was Elsie Morse who was program
chair. She made the comment that the members themselves were
the best program. Some very interesting items were shown and
enjoyed.
Refreshments were served by hostess “Babe” Jenisch, Ann
Carpenter, chairperson, and Margie Lank.
