Challenges, Challenges, Challenges, life has many of them. Like the days getting shorter, the dresses shorter, or the pants that have pleats. What can we do? Challenge ourselves to get out, men, women, and children, and come to a TOPS meeting, and meet people with the same challenges.

We meet Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m., at the Undercroft of St. Stephen’s Church, Main Street, Pittsfield. You need not be a resident of Pittsfield to come and see us take the challenges.

The 12 “Ts”

A small group of teachers gathered at Havenwood Heritage Heights, Concord on July 13th for their annual retirement luncheon with Hostess Harriet Ames.

Attending were Deborah Barton, Beverly Drolet, Nancy Fogg, Elaine Glidden, Carol Grainger and “Skip” Krause. The small number allowed for intimate conversation, stories and much laughter. A delicious summer lunch was catered by Havenwood and served in their Great Room guest facility. A good time was had by all.

Letter to the Editor:

“Congratulations!” and “Well done!” to the Pittsfield High School Class of 1984 on their 25th year class reunion. The organizing committee did a great job and provided a lot of fun for those attending. It was great catching up with many of you and remembering days gone by.

We were proud to see where you have gone and who you have become. You should be proud of yourselves. Thank you for including us as part of your festivities.

Letter To The Editor

To The Good Citizens Of Pittsfield:
In March I was elected to the Planning Board for a three year term. Consider this my six month report. To start with, I otta have my head examined.

I have never served on such a fractured board before. In a typical meeting, we spend the first hour arguing over the last meeting’s minutes. The second hour, we spend discussing board member’s bad behavior.

We have had three applicants come before us. One involved a woman trying to subdivide her house she wanted to sell from a large tract of land which she wanted to keep. The house needed to be sold to keep up its maintenance, which is  important to this women. The board within the law could have granted an exemption from a major subdivision application to a less expensive minor application and helped the applicant. No dice. The board voted no exemption.

Another applicant came to us to build an equipment storage building. There were some errors on the original plan. The applicant came back with a revised plan and after much frustration on his part caused by the Board, his application for site plan review was approved with the condition that the state driveway permit was followed. Some of the board members treated him like a common criminal. He’s not happy.

Our third applicant was treated better. The board voted to exempt the plan review. I voted for the exemption to save the applicant from getting a bad taste in his mouth and the frustration the applicant would surely face.

I’m not much of a baseball fan, but our batting average is one for three. I hope we do better. If I have learned one thing in politics, the only thing that matters is how you treat people.

Respectfully,
Dan Schroth

Letter

I am writing this letter because I am upset about the poor behavior concerning fireworks displayed in Floral Park Cemetery in Pittsfield. I am disappointed by those who feel that their own self-enrichment and gratification is worth more than another person’s dignity as far as a final resting place.

What happened to the serene, dignified atmosphere and respect intended for the deceased? I think that a cemetery would be the least appropriate place for displaying fireworks. I hope that the citizens of Pittsfield would agree with me, including members of the Pittsfield Rotary Club and the Floral Park Cemetery Association.

Both vehicle and foot traffic over grave sites, whether the deceased buried there had been rich, poor, war veteran, or those of the paupers who are buried in the unmarked graves where the fireworks have been set-up these past years, is a violation of their final resting places.

I think that a more suitable place should be found for the fireworks. If not, what will be next, carnival rides on each grave site?

Summer at the Carpenter Library

Now that August has arrived, The Friends of the Josiah Carpenter Library are looking toward autumn, and their upcoming events.  Their next meeting will be held on Monday, September 14, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. New members are always welcome!

The Friends’ Books for Babies program is in full swing again, thanks to a grant from Rotary Club of Pittsfield. In addition to funding this program, monies from the Rotary grant were used to purchase a variety of new children’s books for the library.  Books by such well known authors as, Amy Rosenthal, James Prosek, and Rick Riordan, just to name a few. Be sure to stop by the Children’s Room to view all the new books on hand.

To better accommodate parents with infants, The Friends have purchased a Diaper Changing Station as an addition to the library’s restroom on the lower level.

As part of The Friends appreciation of the historical importance of the Josiah Carpenter Library, we support the beautification of the building and grounds. Materials and labor for some much needed landscaping along the library’s front hillside and seasonal flowers for the barrels on the library’s front steps, were provided by the Friends.

Fall plans include re-seeding of the front lawn, as well as a building restoration project. The Friends are organizing a project to restore the library’s front door to its original beauty.  We welcome your participation in these new projects.

In the coming months look for announcements in this paper regarding upcoming raffles, plant sales, etc.

We wish you all a happy and safe end of the summer !

Sept. 16 Could Become American Legion Day

In the online version of The American Legion July 30, 2009 edition, was a story that should be read to all Americans.

On July 24, 2009 U. S. Representative Halvorson (Dem. 11th Dist. Il)l, submitted House Resolution 679 (H. Res 679) that “calls on Americans to observe American Legion Day on Sept. 16”. When she heard that the 91st birthday of The American Legion, she thought “we should do something to recognize all of the work being done by the Legion for the community and for veterans.”  The significance of Sept 16 is on that day in 1919, the United States Congress chartered The American Legion.

According to Congress.Org, as of August 10, 2009, there are only 42 co-sponsors with 41 from each party. Strangely enough though, neither one of our Representatives have signed on as a co sponsor for this needed resolution.  As the Commander for the American Legion Peterson-Cram Post in Pittsfield, I urge each and every citizen and veteran, Legion member or not, to contact Reps Hodes and Shea-Porter to sign on as co-sponsors and follow through with an affirmative vote.

In response to this resolution, in a letter to Rep. Halvorson, American Legion Commander David K Rehbein wrote “On behalf of the 2.7 million members of the American Legion, I humbly thank you for introducing H. Res 679, a resolution that recognizes Sept 16 annually as The American Legion Day”.  He continued on to say “The American Legion Day would serve as a national day of observance of the goals and ideals of this federally chartered wartime veterans [sic] service organization.”

Here in Pittsfield and in our local communities in the area, we see the effect of the American Legion has; whether it is a scholarship to a graduating high school Senior to observing Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  This resolution is fitting.  Who, among you will join me in this effort to help pass this resolution?

Merrill Vaughan,
Commander
American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75
