PMHS Seniors Help out Habitat in Portland
By Carin J. Plante
On Friday, May 22, twenty-two seniors from Pittsfield Middle
High School traveled to Portland, Maine and spent seven hours
clearing land for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.
Decked out in matching t-shirts sponsored by Shirtmasters of
Chichester, NH and using only handsaws, clippers, and manpower,
the group enthusiastically cleared almost an acre over the
course of the day.
“The experience was liberating and
exhilarating, to think we could do so much and work together as
a team. The physical demands were a lot, but we walked away with
a feeling of success and self-accomplishment,” senior Jared
Austin said.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland is a
chapter of Habitat International. Founded in 1976, International
builds homes for low-income families through volunteer labor and
donated land and materials. To date, they have placed over one
and a half million people into three hundred thousand quality
homes around the world.
This was the first day on this site,
located in Westbrook, which in about a year will have three
quality homes available for Habitat families. Habitat of Greater
Portland builds an average of five houses a year as they attempt
to eliminate poverty housing in the Portland area. They also
operate a second-hand business called ReStore which sells
quality, reusable building materials at reduced prices to help
raise money for housing projects. It is part of the
organization’s commitment to being green whenever possible.
Habitat works to give struggling families a “hand
up, not a hand out,” as Executive Director Steve L.
Bolton told the students prior to beginning work.
“This project is only one of thousands going on
around the world right now, and you are a part of
that.” All families housed by Habitat must pay a
down payment, monthly mortgage payments, and
contribute their own labor into the construction of
their home.
One of the homes that will be built on the lot
the PMHS seniors cleared is what Habitat calls a
“Youth United” project, which means that every
dollar needed to build the home is being collected
and donated by the efforts of youth only. The PMHS
seniors collected $250 in donations to contribute to
the cause.
“It was great to clear out land so houses could
be built,” senior Chris Haire said. “Everyone
laughing, having a good time while helping. Future
classes should do this once a year.”

Humanity of Greater Portland go to their web site at

Greater Pittsfield Chamber Of Commerce Enjoys Business After
Hours At Northeast Garden Center
On a beautiful May evening, members of the Greater Pittsfield
Chamber of Commerce met at Northeast Garden Center on Route 28,
in Chichester, for yet another successful Business After Hours.
We all gathered in Northeast’s, spacious show room, where we
mingled and snacked on hors d’oeuvres and were met by William
“Bill” Boudreau, Northeast’s florist and wedding planner. Newly
revamped, the store has a beautiful raised stone walkway and
arbor, just an example of the work that Northeast offers in the
landscaping side of their business. The store has many unique
gardening items as well as offering a full service florist.
Once we were all gathered, over twenty members in attendance,
Northeast’s owner, Mike Sargent introduced us to his business.
Mike gave us a full tour and explained both the retail side and
the landscaping side of his business. We saw everything from the
beautifully landscaped gardens with different walkways and
waterfalls and Koi ponds, which are worth a trip to Northeast
Landscape Center on its own, to the different mulches, trees,
shrubs, perennials and annuals, most started and grown on site.
The Greater Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce would like to thank
Mike and Bill for a great evening and sharing Northeast Garden
Center with us, and allowing a place for members to share their
own businesses as well.

Robert Feeny To Address Graduates
By Carin J. Plante
Four
years ago, Robert Feeny stood on the stage at Pittsfield Middle
High School to receive his diploma. On June 13 when the Class of
2009 walks the same path, Feeny will be there again, but this
time as the commencement speaker.
Commencement speakers are
chosen each year by the senior class. This year’s group had been
to several graduations where they knew nothing about the
speaker, nor did the speaker say anything that really moved
them. The Class of 2009 wanted to have a speaker who understood
the experience of growing up in Pittsfield, but who also could
connect with them about where they are at in life and how to
make a difference in the world.
“Bobby fits perfectly with
what we wanted: intelligent and successful, absolutely
hilarious, but most importantly a compassionate person,” said
Donna-Lee Grant, president of the Class of 2009.
In high
school, Feeny played soccer and was a co-captain for the 2004
State Runners Up Soccer Team. During the summer Feeny worked at
Hidden Valley Scout Camp facilitating groups of youth through
the challenging outdoor personal experience. As a senior, Feeny
won the Moody Kent award, a prestigious mark of distinction
given to PMHS graduates for: contributions to the school;
extensive involvement in activities; strong leadership;
sportsmanship; creativity; and the ability to follow rules and
regulations. However, what Feeny’s former teachers remember him
for is his wonderful sense of humor, his outgoing personality,
and his ability to liven up class discussions (and not always in
a good way!).
Feeny is currently a senior at Plymouth State
University where he is majoring in English with a concentration
in Literature. He works as a Community Advisor in the residence
halls and a writing tutor. Feeny has volunteered his time in
India where he was working and learning about sustainable
communities. He has also travelled through Europe and to Latin
America, and is a dedicated long distance runner.
“Bobby
Feeny lives more than most people I know,” said Silas St. James,
a teacher at PMHS and a friend of Feeny. “There’s no halfway; he
thinks deeply and acts on his convictions, speaking out from his
mind.”
100 Nights of Remembrance Calendar
The goal of the 100
Nights of Remembrance is to have the 24 notes known as TAPS to
be sounded every evening at NHSVC, until the anniversary on
September 11th. The sounding of TAPS is to honor all Veterans,
both past and present. In addition they will honor the men and
women Police Officers and Firefighters who don a uniform to
protect us every day. This is not a NH State Veterans Cemetery
program. If you are interested in participating or attending the
live taps performance held at 7 P.M. in the evening, visit
http://www.100nightsofremembrance.org/index.html and go to
the Calendar. This shows the dates that volunteers will perform
taps at the NH State Veterans Cemetery. We are proud and honored
that volunteers give of their time to do this for our veterans.
You can read more about this wonderful program by visiting their
web page. Questions should be addressed to Mr. Noel Taylor at
[email protected].
