Maple Weekend
March 28 & 29

New Hampshire’s maple season has begun, and as this early harvest progresses, producers are rushing to boil down the sweet sap into golden maple syrup, candy, sugar, spreads and more. These sugar makers take great pride in producing high quality maple products, and welcome the public into their sugar houses, creating a vital link between food producers and consumers.

By proclamation, Governor John Lynch has designated March 28 & 29 as New Hampshire Maple Weekend, and urges citizens to recognize the economic and cultural importance of maple producers in New Hampshire.

Over 65 sugar houses around the state will be open to visitors during Maple Weekend, offering free samples and tours. Some will be serving up pancake breakfasts and other maple treats. Others will hold special activities such as sap collecting, horse-drawn rides, petting farms and musical entertainment.

A lost of participating sugar houses is posted on the NH Maple Producers Association website: nhmapleproducers.com. Anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet, may call the maple hotline at 603-225-3757.

Dear Pittsfield Residents:
Please consider applying to the Planning Board for appointment as alternate. The Planning Board needs two alternates, and one of its members is on extended absence. Furthermore, the Planning Board has a lot of work to do in this upcoming year, and to do that work well, the Planning Board needs public participation.

If you have felt ignored at a Town-board meeting, or if you thought that a board made a wrong decision, then now is your chance to be heard. If you have never sat on a board or served in government before, do not let this deter you; no experience or expertise is needed. If you can spare a few hours per month, then please speak to either the Town Administrator, Mr. Paul Skowron; the Building Inspector, Mr. Kyle Parker; the Planning Board Acting Chair, Mr. Gerard LeDuc; or me, Jim Pritchard.

Thank you,
Jim Pritchard
Pittsfield

Spring Greetings

Spring is here, birds are singing, the snow is melting, and bulbs are beginning to pop their green shoots up through the ground!

With all of that in mind, it only seemed fitting for The Friends of the Josiah Carpenter Library to raffle off a bright red wheelbarrow full of gardening items at their recent Election Day Raffle.

This year’s proud winner is Shirley Gray, Congratulations Shirley!

The Friends would like to thank Northeast Landscaping and Clark’s Grain Store for their generous contributions to our raffle. We appreciate their continued support of our organization!

Thank you also to all of you voters who purchased raffle tickets.  As always, the funds received will go to the betterment of the Josiah Carpenter Library.

We will be hosting an Artist Reception on March 26th, 5-7 p.m., for the PMHS students, whose artwork has been on display at the library.  Be sure to stop in to meet these talented young people.

Have a Happy & Healthy Spring!

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Announces Fall 2008 Dean’s List

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced that Jennifer Sansom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David W. Sansom of Pittsfield, NH, a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering , was named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the fall 2008 semester.

A total of 823 undergraduate students (about a quarter of the undergraduate population) achieved the criteria required for WPI’s fall 2008 Dean’s List. The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differ from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.

Meet Officer Tanya Emerson of the Pittsfield Police Department

Officer Tanya Emerson joined the Pittsfield Police Department six years ago in order to make a positive influence in the community she grew up in.

The Pittsfield Police Department is proud to have Officer Emerson as a member of the team that is helping to make the Pittsfield Police a stronger department.

Fund Created To Benefit Family Of Kenneth Piaseczny, Sr.

Over 700 individuals attended the calling hours and funeral services for Kenneth Piaseczny last week- a tribute to the impact Ken made on many lives.  To help address the financial hardships created by Ken’s untimely passing, an account has been created at Citizen’s Bank in Pittsfield by some of his former PHS classmates, to benefit Ken’s wife, Tina Piaseczny, and her children, Kenny Jr. and Katelyn.

All those in the community who knew Ken and would like to help out are encouraged to please mail checks to: Citizen’s Bank, c/o Ken Piaseczny- PHS Class of 82 - Memorial Account, 54 Main Street, Pittsfield, NH 03263.

All envelopes and personal notes sent in with your checks will be collected by Citizen’s Bank to give to the family.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated in this time of need for Ken’s family.

Ken was a wonderful man whom we all loved; he was a happy, positive presence to all those he touched.  Ken was “a friend to all” and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need.  It is our hope that we are able to help his family by creating a sizable account which they can use to address the challenges that lie ahead.
