Coe-Brown Northwood Academy New Staff
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to introduce the newest
members of its staff for the 2018-2019 school year.
Colby Baker joins the faculty in the area of Choral Music. In
his third year of education, Mr. Baker holds degrees from the
College of the Holy Cross and the University of Florida. He will
also be directing the CBNA select chorus as well as serving as
the music director for CBNA Theatre musical productions.
Amanda Dooda joins the CBNA faculty in the area of
Social Studies. Ms. Dooda holds degrees from the University of
Southern Maine and from the University of New Hampshire and
brings six years of teaching experience to the Coe-Brown
community.
Alexander Drew joins CBNA as a paraprofessional with
three years’ experience in education. He holds degrees from the
University of Massachusetts and Great Bay Community College.
Jon Ludwig joins CBNA faculty in the area of
instrumental music. Mr. Ludwig brings seven years of
teaching expertise to CBNA with degrees from the University of
New Hampshire and the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of Music. He will also be taking the reins
of the CBNA Pep Band and the Jazz Ensemble.
Daniel Rawls joins the CBNA staff as a paraprofessional.
Mr. Rawls attended the Community College of the Air Force and
the Graduate School of the University of New Hampshire and will
be working with students in the Student Services Division.
Jennifer Sommerer is the newest member of the CBNA World
Language faculty in the area of Spanish. Ms. Sommerer attended
Kennesaw State University, Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara,
and Bowling Green State University. She brings five years’
experience in education to CBNA, and plans to work with students
in the National Spanish Honor Society and Student Travel Abroad
as well as with other staff members on the school Safety
Committee.
Nettie Stiman joins the CBNA staff as a
paraprofessional. Ms. Stiman attended Plymouth State University
and will be working with students as member of the CBNA Student
Services Division.
Steven Wedick brings seven years of teaching experience
to CBNA as the new Auto Mechanics and Welding Instructor. He
attended NHTI Nashua and will be working with students in the
Division of Life Skills.

“Silent September” All Month Long On LRPA After Dark!
Classic Films from Hollywood’s Silent Era
This Weekend’s Features:
Three Classic Comedies Starring Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton
and Harold Lloyd
Actions speak louder than words during the month of September on
LRPA After Dark! Join us each Friday and Saturday night at 10:30
p.m. for “Silent September,” as we pay homage to Hollywood’s
great silent film era.
Almost every genre of film -- action, comedy, romance, western,
horror, sci-fi -- can be traced back to the silent era that
began nearly 125 years ago and ran until the introduction of
“talkies” in the late 1920s. Many technical and artistic
elements that modern moviegoers take for granted, such as scene
continuity, close up shots, enhanced lighting and feature-length
films, were developed during this important time in the history
of cinema. Lakes Region Public Access Television is proud to
highlight some of the most interesting films of this period.
We
continue our month of silent films this weekend (September 14 &
15) with three classic comedy shorts. First up is 1921’s “Never
Weaken” (28 minutes), one of Harold Lloyd’s amazing “thrill
comedies,” a trademark of his extraordinary career. Lloyd’s
character, “The Boy,” is deeply in love with “The Girl” (Mildred
Davis). Through a series of misunderstandings, The Boy believes
that The Girl is going to marry someone else. His misery leads
him to some very drastic – and wildly dangerous – measures,
which, happily, do not turn out the way that he had planned.
This short is a treasure for the silent film fan. Our second
feature, 1921’s “The Play House” (22 minutes), stars Buster
Keaton, who also co-wrote and co-directed the short. The film
opens with a much-heralded “dream sequence,” one that employed
wonderful special effect techniques that allowed Keaton to play
multiple roles at the same time. This film has always been a
favorite of Keaton’s many fans, and is a delight from start to
finish. Our final short is 1917’s “The Immigrant” (24 minutes),
starring (as well as written and directed by) Charlie Chaplin.
Chaplin’s beloved “Little Tramp” is an immigrant traveling to
America on a comically difficult voyage. While on board the ship
he meets Edna Purviance, another traveler, and has many
adventures before they land in New York. The second half of the
film finds Charlie trying to adapt to his new life in the US. It
is every bit as charming as any full-length Chaplin feature. The
actor once said that this film “ … touched me more than any film
I’ve made.”
“Never Weaken,” “The Play House” and “The Immigrant” were all
critical and box office successes. Where else but on LRPA can
you enjoy Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin all in
one glorious night? So grab your popcorn and join LRPA after
dark for a night of daredevil stunts, cinematic innovation, and
sweetly romantic comedy.

Northwood Budget Committee Openings

The
Northwood Budget Committee is looking for two individuals who
are willing to serve and commit the necessary time for the
upcoming budget season. The budget committee is a
volunteer committee of Northwood residents who review and
recommend annual budgets for the town, school district, water
district and Cove Village District for voter consideration at
the March election. There are no requirements to be a budget
committee member except a willingness to serve and to take the
time to review the information provided. Knowledge or
understanding of accounting, budgets or math is helpful.
Training and information on the budget process is available to
members at no cost. Elected members serve a three year term;
vacancies are filled until the next March election.
The
individuals selected for appointment must be available for the
following scheduled 2018/2019 dates:
•
The first two Saturdays in December, 12/1 & 12/8 from 9:00 AM to
3:00 PM.
•
The next two Mondays & Wednesdays, 12/3 & 12/5, and 12/10 &
12/12 beginning at 7:00PM.
•
The two January dates are Wednesday, 1/9/19 & Thursday, 1/10/19
at 7:00 PM
For
those of you interested in applying, please submit a letter of
interest to the Northwood Town Hall, attention Board
Administrator Linda Smith, 818 First NH Turnpike, Northwood, NH
03261. The submission deadline is Friday, October 12th at
4:00 PM. The committee will review the letters and vote to
appoint during our meeting on 10/17/18. You will need to
be present, to answer any questions of the committee, at the
October 17th Budget Committee Meeting to be considered.

Dr. Of Ministry Degree Conferred
The Evangelical Theological Seminary is pleased to
announce that it has conferred a Doctor of Ministry Degree in
Biblical Theology on Ross E. Allen of Northwood. Ross, a
life-long resident of Northwood, has several years of Bible
teaching experience. He established Light for the Last
Days, a Bible prophecy teaching ministry, in 1990.
He
is especially pleased that this degree was conferred on August
7th, his 74th birthday (you’re never too old to learn). He
hopes to expand his teaching ministries and to develop a solid
ministry of evangelism that will have a positive impact for the
Lord in our state of New Hampshire.
The
Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETS) was established in 1981
as the Educational Division for Theological and Ecclesiastical
Studies of Abundant Life Ministries in Orlando, FL. The
degree programs are designed solely for religious vocations and
provide a biblically-oriented theological education and training
for those who are already in the ministry, for those just
beginning their ministry, or for laity who have a desire to gain
more biblical and theological knowledge. This includes pastors,
missionaries, evangelists, Bible teachers, church workers,
church staff members, ministry directors, and musicians.
Comedy Hypnosis Comes To CBNA
Steve Wronker Comedy Hypnosis appearing at CBNA on
September 14.
Steve Wronker’s Funny Business, a comedy hypnosis extravaganza,
will arrive at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy on Friday, September
14, 2017, at 7 pm in the Gerrish Gym on the CBNA campus.
Steve Wronker is a unique entertainer with a unique slant on the
most hilarious, the most outrageous, and the funniest form of
comedy available in today’s entertainment market, and the SWFB
comedy hypnosis show is extremely different from any other
hypnosis show available. Audience members become the stars of
the show. A true entertainer, Steve puts audience volunteers
into his show and orchestrates a program of absolute hilarity!

Northwood Historical Society Turns 50
The
Northwood Historical Society just met an impressive milestone,
we are 50 years old. We are having a celebration on September
18, 2018 at the Northwood Community Hall located at the corner
of Main and School Street in Northwood Narrows.
There will be a program about the history of our museum
building, the Bryant Library and our history as an organization.
We will start at 7:00 PM with the program to follow. If you have
ever been a member or were on the board, please come and accept
our thanks by having a piece of anniversary cake. This event is
free and open to the public.
If
you enjoy history and would like to know more about about the
Northwood Historical Society, this will be a chance to learn
about our organization in an informal setting. We hope you
will join us in celebrating our first 50 years and become a new
member or renew your current membership has we start our next 50
years of preserving Northwood’s history.
CBNA To Hold Annual Homecoming September 14 & 15
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to announce that our
Annual Homecoming will be celebrated on Friday and Saturday,
September 14 and 15, 2018.
The
weekend will kick off with “Red and White” day for students on
Friday, followed by the family friendly Comedy Hypnosis Show
Steve Wronker’s Funny Business at 7 pm ($10) in the Gerrish
Gym.
A
full day of fantastic family activities is planned across the
campus for Saturday the 15th including athletic events: Bass
Fishing at 8 am, Cross Country vs. Portsmouth and Bow at 9 am,
Girls JV/V Soccer vs. Oyster River at noon, Boys JV/V Soccer vs.
Plymouth at 2 pm and Girls R/JV/V Volleyball vs. St. Thomas at
2:30, 3:45, and 5.
To
get the day started there will be a pancake breakfast hosted by
the CBNA Chapter of FCCLA from 8-10 am in the Smith Hall
Lobby. Pre-sale tickets are $8 per person or $25 for a family of
4 or more, or $10 per person or $30 for a family of 4 or more at

Other activities during the day will include a woodman’s demo,
silent auction, and activity booths. Concessions will be offered
throughout the day. Homecoming Saturday will end with a
homecoming semi-formal dance sponsored by the senior class for
current students from 7-10 pm.

Letter To The Editor
Got
Pets? Got Vets?
New
Hampshire does not have a College of Veterinary Medicine of its
own, so its would-be vets must go out of state for training. To
help pay for this, the state had a program that paid the
difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at two vet
schools in New England: Tufts and Cornell.
Note that this was for a maximum of 2 seats/year at each of the
two schools, a maximum outlay of $48,000 in a
multi-billion-dollar budget.
My
daughter, Gabriele, was the beneficiary of this program when she
graduated from college in 2008 and was admitted at Cornell. This
made more than a $12,000 a year difference for her first two
years. Tuition in-state was still over $32,000!
But
in 2010, the program was cancelled by the Bill O’Brien-led NH
Legislature. At the same time, funding for the University System
was drastically cut and continues at a level 35% less than it
was in 1988.
The
result is that UNH has the highest in-state tuition IN THE
COUNTRY and its graduates have the highest amount of student
loans IN THE COUNTRY. And as a consequence, many students leave
the state for college and never come back. My daughter did.
This is why I am running for the House. Education funding in NH
- from Keno-funded kindergarten to college and beyond - is
inadequate. And because it is financed so heavily with local
property taxes, it is driving people out of their homes.
It
is time to restructure our system of taxation. Let’s stop
“shucking’ and jivin’” and cutting and shifting.
