Northwood Food Pantry Drive Up Collection
Northwood Republican committee will be at the Northwood transfer
station entrance on Saturday, June 9th, 9am-12 noon, for a drive
up collection benefitting the Northwood Food Pantry, which is in
great need of the following items: toilet paper, paper towels,
toothpaste, toothbrushes, bath soap, shampoo, laundry detergent
and Tuna fish . Thank you.
Strawberry Festival
That “berry-sweet” time of year has arrived, and on Saturday,
June 23 the Northwood Congregational Church, UCC welcomes you to
their Annual Strawberry Festival and Outdoor Yard Sale from 8am
to 2pm.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast of sausage and pancakes
topped with freshly-picked strawberries, or stop by between 11am
and 2pm for a grilled hot dog or hamburger served with chips and
a fresh side salad. Strawberry smoothies and homemade
strawberry shortcakes piled with whipped cream or ice cream will
be served all day long. Our Bake Sale offering
creatively-themed strawberry items, including pies (show up
early, they sell quickly!) handmade in kitchens of the local
chefs of our church will also be available! Plenty of
quarts of locally picked strawberries will also be on sale for
your own baking and canning needs.
You
may also find a treasure (or two) at our Outdoor Yard Sale under
the big tent!

Five CBNA Students Selected For 2018 Advanced Studies Program
CBNA Headmaster David Smith is pleased to announce that five
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy juniors, Shayla Ashley, Brian
Downer, Sydney Newman, Holly Magowan, and Cooper Leduke have
been accepted into the highly selective St. Paul’s School
Advanced Studies Program this summer.
Each year, St. Paul’s opens its doors to the most highly
qualified juniors in New Hampshire’s public high schools for an
intensive, five-week program of study. Through a competitive
application process, students are selected to attend this
program which runs for five weeks during the summer. Students
live on campus and have an opportunity to study one topic in
depth, as well as participate in a wide variety of activities
and athletics during their stay.
Congratulations to these talented and highly qualified students.
This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1971’s “Evel Knievel”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this
Friday and Saturday night (June 8 & 9) for our “LRPA After Dark”
presentation of 1971’s “Evel Knievel,” starring George
Hamilton.
“Evel Knievel” is a somewhat satiric but good-natured biography
of Bobby “Evel” Knievel (Hamilton), famed motorcycle daredevil
and self-proclaimed “last American gladiator.” As the film
opens, Knievel is at California’s Ontario Motor Speedway,
preparing for his next big stunt: jumping his bike over 19
automobiles. Knievel begins to reflect on his life and memories,
and so the story is told in flashback. We see Knievel as a young
boy, attending his first daredevil show, with tragic results; we
see Knievel as a young man, full of ego and wild charm; and we
see him in the present day, facing greater stunts and crazy
challenges.
“Evel Knievel” is one of several biopics of the late, great
stunt rider, but for many of his fans, this one is the very
best. Don Druker of The Chicago Reader summed it up by writing,
“George Hamilton’s performance as the amiable megalomaniac is an
affectionate portrait of a truly crazy man, rounded out with
casual, throwaway humor.” What better way to end Motorcycle
Week? So grab your popcorn and meet us after dark for this

Obituaries
Maj. Gen. John H. Jacobsmeyer Jr., USAF, Ret.
NORTHWOOD - Gen. Jacobsmeyer (known to family as “Jack” and to
friends as “Jake”) passed away in the early morning hours of May
24, 2018. Jack was born in 1930 in Portsmouth, NH to John H. and
Priscilla (Hooper) Jacobsmeyer Sr. He and his brother, Bill,
grew up there during the Great Depression and World War II with
the hard working, small community values of that period. He
graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1952 with a
bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. As a distinguished
military graduate of the AFROTC program, he entered active duty
with an assignment to missile and flight testing.
Jack’s first career as a USAF officer lasted for 29 years, with
duties in communications research and development interspersed
with graduate studies at the University of Michigan and the Air
War College. He also served in Saigon from 1971 to 1972 during
the Vietnam War, supervising combat communications. The last
nine years of his career were spent with the North American Air
Defense Command and as Vice Director of the Defense
Communications Agency. His awards and decorations include the
Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Service Medal.
After Jack’s retirement from the Air Force in 1981, he returned
to New Hampshire, settling in Northwood in a now 232-year-old
farmhouse to operate Spring Run Farm, where he raised Black
Angus cattle, provided some defense consulting services, and
supported town affairs. The latter service included being a town
Selectman, the Water District Commissioner and other planning
and organizational positions.
Jack was always a formidable intellect, seeing connections and
patterns that most others would miss, and he often regaled
friends and family with great stories ranging from his official
duties in the Air Force to the daily tasks of managing his
cattle operation. Although his professions were in engineering
and agriculture, he also had a knack for artistic design that
became visible in a number of his home projects. Jack was a man
with many more projects to accomplish than could ever be
finished, and he would have had it no other way.
Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia (McDonough)
of Portsmouth; his brother William Edward (Anna Mae)
Jacobsmeyer, and by his children, Joanne Elizabeth (Matthew)
Sprott, Jay Michael (Joyce) Jacobsmeyer, Susan Eileen (Paul)
Kowalski, John Henry III (Katrina) Jacobsmeyer, eight
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held May 31 at Christ Episcopal Church in
Portsmouth, NH. A military service and burial were held the same
day at the New Hampshire State Veteran’s Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
