Congratulations to Emilee Gancarz of Northwood, who was awarded
a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering with high
distinction on Saturday, May 12, from Worcester Polytechnic
Institute (WPI). Over 1,000 bachelor’s degrees were awarded
during the university’s 150th commencement ceremony.
The
address of the Northwood Community Center in the announcement of
The Forum’s Annual Meeting on June 10 was incorrect. The

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has announced that Emilee

university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring

Evergreen Lodge #53 and American Legion Post #112 are sponsoring
a Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 2nd from 8-11. This event is
free to youth ages 15 and under. Bring your favorite fishing
pole and bait. Some loaner poles and bait will be available.

Republican President Trump has our economy taking off, he is

dance at their Semi Formal which was held on May 18th at
Northwood School.

Chesley Memorial Library News
Kick off the 2018 Summer Reading Program “Libraries Rock” with
Steve Blunt’s “Rocking Sing-Along” program! A fun, upbeat
musical celebration for the whole family--with a kid-friendly
mix of original tunes & familiar standards! For summer reading
2018, Steve has a brand new hit single with a classic 1950s
sound: “Libraries Rock--Let’s Rock ‘n’ Roll & Read!” He keeps
the crowd singing, clapping & moving along--while he sings and
plays guitar, djembe drum, ukulele, low brass horn & more. And
there’s always a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on when Steve passes
out shaker eggs for all the kids! This award-winning children’s
musician is a seasoned performer who delivers a little rock ‘n’
roll--and lots of fun--for library audiences of all ages,
especially families with young children.
The
Chesley Memorial Library received a “Kids, Books, & the Arts”
grant to help bring this performance to Northwood. Funding
for the Kids, Books and the Arts event is provided by the Jack
and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust,
and is sponsored in part by a grant from the NH State Council on
the Arts & the National Endowment for the Arts as well as funds
administered by the New Hampshire State Library and provided by
the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Please
provide advance notice to the library if you need a sign
language interpreter.

CBNA Announces The 2018 Inductees Into The CBNA Athletic Hall Of
Fame
The
following Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Alumni are to be inducted
into the CBNA Athletic Hall of Fame:
Mr.
Donald MacCallum – Class of 1951
Mr.
Donald MacCallum attended Coe-Brown Northwood Academy from 1947
to 1951. He was married to his wife Sandra for 40 years.
Together, they had two sons, Peter and Stephen, and six
grandchildren. Three of those grandchildren, Samantha,
Abigail and Donald went on to graduate from Coe-Brown with high
honors. Mr. MacCallum served in the United State Marine Corps
and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was the president of
MacCallum’s Boathouse in Epsom, NH from 1969 to 1998.
While at Coe-Brown, Mr. MacCallum was a member of the CBNA cross
country team for four years, and assumed the role of Captain in
1949 and 1950. In 1950, the CBNA team won the state
championship for the first time in the history of the school,
and Mr. MacCallum was the top CBNA finisher in the Class C
championship meet. Mr. MacCallum played four years of
varsity baseball and was the team captain in 1950 and 1951.
Mr. MacCallum was also a member of the Varsity Basketball team
for two years. Prior to his death in 1999, Mr. MacCallum,
was a long-time member of the CBNA Board of Trustees.
Mr.
Paul Guptill – Class of 1952
Mr.
Paul Guptill attended Coe-Brown Northwood Academy from 1948 to
1952. For over 50 years he has lived in Florida and
Newbury, NH. He has been married to his wife Julia for 36
years and have two daughters and two granddaughters. Mr.
Guptill served in the United States Army for two years and then
went on to attend the University of New Hampshire where he
obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. After
his college graduation he worked as a civil engineer
constructing highways in the State of Florida. He then
started his own company, PJ Construction. During his time
at Coe-Brown Mr. Guptill was a four year member of the CBNA
varsity baseball team. He was the starting second baseman
on the 1952 state championship baseball team. He was also a four
year member of the CBNA varsity basketball team and a four year
member of the CBNA Cross Country team finishing as a top runner
on the 1950 State Cross Country Championship Team. The
CBNA golf tournament is named after Mr. Guptill and is currently
in its 13th year. Mr. Guptill has been very supportive and
a contributing member of CBNA and the Alumni Association.
Mr.
Phil Guptill – Class of 1952
Mr.
Phil Guptill attended Coe-Brown Northwood Academy from 1948 to
1952 and was the son of Coe Academy graduate Helen (Gerrish)
Guptill. For over 50 years he has lived in Barrington and
Dover NH. He has one son, Paul and a daughter Melanie, who
passed away in 2015, a granddaughter and two great
grandchildren. Mr. Guptill served in the United States
Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Korean War. After his
service, Mr. Guptill worked in construction and was the owner of
PJ Guptill Excavating. Both Paul and Phil Guptill’s
grandfather, Samuel Gerrish, served on the CBNA Board of
Trustees for 34 years. The Gerrish Gym, built in 1961, was
dedicated to Mr. Gerrish in 1984. During his time at
Coe-Brown, Phil Guptill was a four year member of the CBNA
varsity baseball team. He was the ace pitcher on the 1952
state championship baseball team. He was also a four year member
of the CBNA varsity basketball team.
Mr.
David Newell – Class of 1952
Mr.
David Newell attended Coe-Brown Northwood Academy from 1948 to
1952. For the past 30 years, he has lived in Port Henry,
NY with his wife Sandra. He has three children, Michael,
Cheryl and Diane and three grandchildren. After serving 13
years in the United States Army, he began and ran a successful
construction business. During his time at Coe-Brown, Mr.
Newell was a four-year member of the CBNA varsity baseball team.
He was the starting catcher on the 1952 State Championship
baseball team. Mr. Newell also participated on the cross country
team in 1949-1951, where he was one of the top Coe-Brown
finishers on the 1950 State Championship team. Mr. Newell
was also a member of the Coe-Brown varsity basketball team for
three years.
All
four gentlemen, Mr. MacCallum posthumously, will be inducted at
the 13th Annual Paul Guptill Golf Tournament on June 9, 2018, at
Nippo Lake Country Club.
This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1951’s “At War With The Army”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 p.m. this
Friday and Saturday night (June 1 & 2) for our “LRPA After Dark”
presentation of 1951’s musical comedy “At War With the Army,”
starring the classic comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry
Lewis.
Sergeant Victor Puccinelli and Private First Class Alvin Korwin
serve in the U.S. Army during WWII. Before enlisting, they were
best friends and partners in a nightclub song-and-dance act.
Since enlisting and serving on the same base, they tend to get
on each other’s nerves. Puccinelli (Martin), a suave ladies’
man, is good at his boring, paper-pushing desk job, but dreams
of being transferred to active duty overseas. His CO has no
intentions of letting him leave, intending instead to commission
him as the company’s Warrant Officer. Korwin (Lewis) is a
lovable goofball who works in the mess hall but can’t do
anything right. Everything he touches turns to disaster. He’s on
K.P. duty as a result of his incompetence. Korwin begs for a
weekend pass visit his wife, but can’t seem to catch a break.
Things are further complicated by Puccinelli’s love life, which
is in a constant whirlwind, plus the fact that Korwin wants his
old partner to record a song they have co-written and rehearse
for a USO show, much to Puccinelli’s chagrin. Will Puccinelli
get to see active duty? Will Korwin get to see his wife back
home? Most importantly, will the guys get together and put on
the show?
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made 16 movies together over the
span of their careers. “At War With the Army” was their third
movie, but their first starring vehicle. Their roles in this
film, as in all of their movies, follow typecasting: Martin as
the handsome Romeo, Lewis as the luckless jokester. “At War With
the Army” has everything that you’d expect from a Martin and
Lewis movie: loads of wonderful slapstick moments, as well as
songs, shtick, crazy mix-ups and zany antics, and even a spoof
of Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald in “Going My Way.” This was
vintage Martin and Lewis, before egos and jealousy got in the
way. If it sounds like fun, then grab your popcorn and meet us
after dark for this wacky sendup of Army bureaucracy.
