Coe-Brown Northwood Academy proudly announces the local winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest sponsored by the VFW.  Coordinated through Mr. Daniel Barnhart of the Northwood VFW Post 7217, sophomore students in Mrs. Biery’s English classes submitted their audio and written essays based on this year’s topic “Why My Vote Matters”.   At a recent school assembly, Mr. Barnhart presented first place winner Sarah Marsh with a prize of $100 and announced that her entry will be submitted to the next level of competition.  Second and third place winners Mary Katherine Pattteson and Jennifer Bettencourt also received monetary prizes.  Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme.

Letter

To the Voters of Northwood,

I want to thank you, the voters of Northwood, for your confidence in me. Last week I participated in an orientation to serve as your State Representative, and remain committed to doing my best to bring your concerns and hopes to Concord.

I will be closing down my Facebook page at the end of the week. My decision not to use Facebook as a way to communicate with Northwood residents is deliberate. From what my wife, Grace Mattern (who served as my fiscal agent and campaign manager), and I have observed Facebook makes political discourse more divisive and less productive. People rarely listen to differing points of view and often resort to name-calling, “alternative facts,” and mischaracterizations to make their points.

I would much prefer to talk directly with voters and to hear your opinions through in-person exchanges. I plan to hold regular forums that I’ll announce in local papers and on Facebook. The forums will be a chance for me to let you know what issues are coming before the Legislature and to get your feedback.

You can also reach me through email or by leaving a message at the phone number below.

Thank you again for your support. Let’s stay in touch.

Letter To The Editor

On November 15th I attended the public Informational meeting for the proposed public safety complex for Northwood. There is no doubt there is a need for new space to house our police, fire and emergency management departments. Although the cost to build this facility was not disclosed at this meeting, a comparison can easily be made for what other communities have spent to build their safety facilities and their square footages. I looked at several towns including the town of Bow.

One of Northwood’s former town administrators (David Stack) went to work as town manager in Bow in 2010. Bow’s population in 2016 was 7,775 compared to Northwood’s 4,263 or 45% higher. Bow has about 2,948 housing units compared to Northwood’s 2,125 or 40% more. Their operating budget ($15.7 million) is close to four times that of Northwood’s ($4.1 million). The estimated household income in Bow for 2016 was $113,634 compared to Northwood’s at $71,220 or 60% higher than Northwood.

Bow began looking to build a safety complex in 2013. Their first cost estimate came in at more than $7 million. That original proposal did not pass at town meeting and a second try also failed the following year. Finally at a more realistic price tag of $4.3 million (reduction of 40%) and a reduced square footage (down to 24,000) the warrant article passed in 2016. Their open house was held in July 2017. This facility will meet the needs of Bow residents for many years to come at an affordable price according to Mr. Stack.

It will be interesting to see when Northwood’s committee releases their estimated cost and the size of the proposed safety complex. That cost will determine whether they took the time to do a cost/benefit analysis and also considered the demographics of Northwood.

Sincerely,

Jim Hadley

Northwood
