Free Discover Girl Scouts Event
Come discover what makes Girl Scouts the leading expert on
girls!
Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains will host a free
information session for girls and parents on Monday, Nov. 19,
from 6 to 7 p.m. at Northwood School, 511 1st New Hampshire
Turnpike, Northwood. Girls and their families can meet local
Girl Scouts and volunteers; learn about expanded STEM and
outdoor programs; enjoy fun, girl-led activities; explore
programs; learn about volunteer opportunities; and register to
become a Girl Scout. Plus, girls will receive a free Discover
Girl Scouts embroidered patch.

This Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1946’s “The Stranger”
Join Lakes Region Public Access Television at 10:30 PM this
Friday and Saturday night (November 16 & 17) for our “LRPA After
Dark” presentation of 1946’s suspenseful thriller “The
Stranger,” starring Orson Welles (who also directed), Loretta
Young and Edward G. Robinson.
Wilson (Robinson), an investigator with the Allied War Crimes
Commission, is looking for Franz Kindler (Welles), a notorious
Nazi war criminal — the mastermind behind their death
camps — who has made his way from Germany to a sleepy
Connecticut town. There, he has carefully constructed a new
identity. He is now living incognito as Charles Rankin, a
college professor and antique clock enthusiast who will soon
marry lovely Mary Rankin (Young), the daughter of a respected
judge. His cover is intact until Wilson, tailing another escaped
Nazi prisoner, begins to suspect that there may be more to
Professor Rankin than meets the eye.
Released in 1946, “The Stranger” holds the distinction of being
the first American feature film to include documentary footage
of Nazi concentration camps. “The Stranger” is by far the
least well known, and perhaps most conventional, of Orson
Welles’ movies. In fact, he only took on the project to prove to
studio executives that he could direct a film that came in on
time, within budget and without any problems, unlike his earlier
masterpieces “Citizen Kane” and “The Magnificent Ambersons.”
Welles readily accomplished that task, although the artistic and
personal compromises he was forced to make on “The Stranger”
resulted in it being his least favorite film.
Despite all of Welles’ misgivings, “The Stranger” is a tense and
suspenseful thriller with exceptional performances from its
entire cast. Variety reviewed it as “ … socko melodrama,
spinning an intriguing web of thrills and chills.” If you
love American film noir, this is the one for you. So grab your
popcorn and join LRPA after dark for this thriller from the
past.
Northwood Historical Society
Please note the change of location of the Northwood Historical
Society annual potluck supper and program from the Northwood
Community Hall to the Advent Christian Church on November 20.
The
church is located just around the corner from the Community Hall
at 113 School Street.
The
potluck supper will start at 6:00 PM. Please bring a dish to
share: salad, side dish, main dish or dessert and your place
setting. Beverage will be provided.
Starting at 7:00 PM, Neil English sharing his vast
knowledge of antique tools.
The
event is free and open to the public.

Could Save A Life!
The
Northwood Congregational Church, a church with a heart is
pleased to announce the recent purchase of an Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) to be mounted in the lobby area adjacent to
the north entrance and accessible from Fellowship Hall.
There will be an informative training session led by Mr. Bill
Wood of the NH Department of Safety who will present an overview
of the statewide AED efforts, the NH AED legal protections, and
a review and demonstration of the new AED device.
Please join us for coffee and a “nibble” in Fellowship
Hall on SUNDAY NOVEMBER 25 at 10:30 as the use of this life
saving device is discussed and demonstrated. NOTE the inclement
weather date of December 2, 2018.

Letter To The Editor
Thank You’s Are In Order
First, I would like to thank the 2,000+ voters who braved the
elements to vote last Tuesday. I’d especially like to thank the
964 voters who voted for me and 1,005 voters who voted for Dr.
David Coursin, giving him a 17-vote edge over his opponent, Joe
McCaffrey. Congratulations, David.
Second, I like to thank Joe McCaffrey for running and beating
incumbent Brian J. Stone in the primary. This removed the
incumbent Republican, and opened the way for voters to consider
two “new” candidates.
Third, I would like to thank my opponent Terry Roy for NOT
continuing to run a campaign of personal attacks. I say “not
continuing” because early on, I was told of some posts that
appeared labeling me as a tax-and-spend, anti-gun socialist, or
something like that. But then I heard that the posts had been
taken down. Thanks, Terry. And good luck representing us as a
member of the minority party.
Finally, I would like to thank Cheryl Dean for her unremitting
and unfounded attacks on David Coursin. And for never getting
around to saying anything positive about his opponent.
While some may have bought what she was selling “hook, line and
sinker,” I think that many more were turned off by this
negativity. And I think that at least 17 people expressed their
disgust by voting for David.
In
that way, her “gun control extremist” campaign backfired. Pardon
the pun.

Northwood Santa’s Helpers
The
Northwood Fire-Rescue Association is sponsoring the 2018
Northwood Santa’s Helpers. This program is designed to
assist families living in Northwood with Christmas gifts for
children ages birth to 18 years old that would not otherwise
receive gifts this year. To participle in this program you
and your children must live in Northwood at the time of
application and at the time of delivery.
Applications are available at the Ridge Fire Station, Northwood
Town Hall front window and from the Human Services Director,
Northwood Food Pantry and the community bulletin board at the
Northwood Post Office.
Donation boxes marked Northwood Santa’s Helpers will be
available after December 1st at local merchants or gifts may be
dropped off at the Ridge Fire Station. Your unwrapped gift will
be matched to a child’s wish from the applications we receive
and marked with the child’s name from Santa. If you care
to make a cash donation to be used to purchase winter clothing,

Enforcement, First Responders, Military
On
Saturday, November 17th from 12pm to 2pm, Dylan Harlow will be
hosting a job fair at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. This job fair
is specific to law enforcement, first responders, and military.
Attending organizations include: Northwood Police, State Police,
Marine Patrol, State K-9 Unit, Department of Corrections, 9/11
Operator, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard, Northwood Fire,
and DHART.
This event is meant to be educational and interesting. You can
meet the men and women of these careers and learn about their
jobs. Some of these organizations are recruiting for anyone
looking for a job in these careers.
Multiple organizations are also bringing vehicles. All
organizations will be bringing visual materials. The K-9 unit
will be doing a dog demonstration and all organizations will be
answering questions and talking at their own tables.
There will be a raffle at the event and all proceeds will go to
the Lung Cancer Research Foundation.
Obituaries
Gary A. Hodgdon
NOTTINGHAM – Gary A. Hodgdon, 60, of Nottingham, passed away on
Monday, November 5, 2018 at his home with his family by his side
following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on January 2, 1958 in Concord, he was the son of the late
Maurice and Jean (Andersen) Hodgdon.
Gary worked for many years in the heating business before
starting Hodgdon’s Heating, which he ran for 25 years. Gary had
a big heart for helping those in need and was an all-around
handyman who everyone looked up to. He enjoyed attending antique
car shows, tending to his vegetable garden, spending time with
his family, and had a love for making Windsor chairs. He was
also a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Rochester, NH.
He will be missed by all who knew him and his stories will live
on through his close family and friends.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Kenneth
Hodgdon.
He
is survived by his wife Terry Hodgdon of Nottingham with whom he
shared 39 wonderful years; his daughters, Sara Hodgdon and her
husband Steven Blase of Barrington, and Mandy Morales and her
husband Daryl of Barrington; his siblings, Wayne Hodgdon, Gloria
Lanza, Mike Hodgdon, and Scott Hodgdon. He was Papa and super
hero to Jackson, Connor, and Adelyn and also leaves his beloved
family in Norway, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and
lifelong friends.
A
Celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Sunday, November 18,
1-3pm, at Still Oaks Funeral Home in Epsom, NH
We
wish to acknowledge the wonderful team at Massachusetts General
Hospital, including Drs. Justine Cohen and Priscilla Brastianos,
and to support advances in melanoma and brain metastases
