The Misleading Tax
Bill Insert
If you opened your tax bill last month, you noticed an insert
from Joe Gunter titled, Northwood Tax stats. He said he’d
“received a few questions about the tax rate” so he thought he
would include some stats to make sure people weren’t blaming the
town hall for high taxes. Basically, you can blame your high tax
rate on the schools. There’s a gigantic pie chart to inform you
that 60% of your tax dollars are allocated to the schools.
I have many questions regarding this
document, such as, why is there anything in my tax bill other
than my tax bill? Who authorized this document be put in my tax
bill? The Selectman? Was the School Board aware of this? Did the
Budget Committee sign off on it?
I take issue with this document because I believe it is
anti-education propaganda disguised as helpful information. Data
is only worth anything if it’s properly interpreted.
Northwood’s tax rate should be compared to towns of similar
size, with similar property values. Our tax rate, unfortunately,
reflects our lower assessed property values. Northwood also
doesn’t have industries or businesses as part of our tax base.
Tell me more about how our education tax rate is 40% greater
than the average school rate in NH. No, really, tell me more
because that number means nothing without more information.
To make matters worse, this document is now being cited by
school board member Tim Jandebeur, as if he needed more
anti-spending fuel. Mr. Jandebeur may not think high
quality baseball bats that don’t break are necessities, but I
disagree. It’s called, you get what you pay for.
I urge everyone to attend a Selectmen meeting or email
[email protected]
regarding this document.

To the Editor,
Remember, there are no bad teams, just
bad team leaders. I want to thank the Deerfield citizen who was
nice enough to read my last letter to the Board. You just never
know where help will come from. Unintended consequences, amazing
where they will pop up. Of course, what she wants is for the
Board to shut me up. Good luck with that. The new School Board
Chair has tried. He removed our opportunity in new and old
business to bring things to the Board. There was no vote.
Fresh from a NHSBA training session
and feeling his oats, he managed to break numerous Right-to-Know
laws. Questioned at each change he said, “I think I can.” Well,
he has found out that he can’t. He likes to cut me off, does it
all of the time. Certainly not smart enough to understand what
happens when you flash red flags in front of a bull.
Our Governor signed into law HB1418
that requires the same level of detail in non-public minutes as
public minutes. The public has a right to know. However, the
plan being pushed is to limit public minutes to nothing, as our
non-public are. You would be mortified to hear what goes on in
non-public sessions. My new policy is to walk out of meetings
and to not respond to emails that violate the NH RTN (sic) laws.

Weekend’s LRPA After Dark Feature:
1971’S “Evel
Knievel”
Join Lakes Region Public Access
Television at 10:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday night (June 17
& 18) for our “LRPA After Dark” presentation of 1971’s “Evel
Knievel,” starring George Hamilton.
“Evel Knievel” is a somewhat satiric
but good-natured biography of Bobby “Evel” Knievel (Hamilton),
famed motorcycle daredevil and self-proclaimed “last American
gladiator.” As the film opens, Knievel is at California’s
Ontario Motor Speedway, preparing for his next big stunt:
jumping his bike over 19 automobiles. Knievel begins to reflect
on his life and memories, and so the story is told in flashback.
We see Knievel as a young boy, attending his first daredevil
show, with tragic results; we see Knievel as a young man, full
of ego and wild charm; and we see him in the present day, facing
greater stunts and crazy challenges.
“Evel Knieval” is one of several biopics of the late, great
stunt rider, but for many of his fans, this one is the very
best. Don Druker of The Chicago Reader summed it up by writing,
“George Hamilton’s performance as the amiable megalomaniac is an
affectionate portrait of a truly crazy man, rounded out with
casual, throwaway humor.” What better way to end Motorcycle
Week? So grab your popcorn and meet us after dark for this
bike-filled cult classic. Not a MetroCast subscriber? Log

CBNA Wins
Local Hannaford Helps Schools Grant
Northwood Hannaford representatives Associate Relations
Manager Bernice Raffaele (left) and Customer Service Manager
Jillian Turgeon (center) present a $1000 check to CBNA
Headmaster David Smith for winning the local Hannaford Helps
Schools program.
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy recently was awarded a grant through
the Hannaford Helps Schools program. Associate Relations Manager
Bernice Raffaele and Customer Service Manager Jillian Turgeon
presented Headmaster David Smith with a check for $1000 for
winning this year’s contest. Since its inception, Hannaford
Helps Schools has raised more than $9.2 million for schools in
New England and New York. The program allows customers to choose
from more than 1200 participating products and to get three
“school dollars” for every four items purchased. Customers then
“vote” for the school by depositing “school dollars” in the
collection tower at the local store. CBNA would like to
thank area Hannaford customers for helping to put us over the
top, and to thank the Hannaford Helps Schools program for making
a difference in students’ educations.
CBNA FCCLA Attends Spring Conference
The CBNA Chapter members of FCCLA at the FCCLA State
Conference and their advisors.
This year’s CBNA Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
(FCCLA) chapter worked very hard on many projects and it
certainly showed at New Hampshire’s FCCLA Spring Conference at
Attitash Grand Summit in Bartlett, NH in April. A majority of
CBNA chapter members attended state conference where several
students competed, placed, and received recognition for
completing Star Events. Mikayla Prina and Chelsea McCallion
received bronze for Chapter in Review. Ashley Reiff and Nicole
Hodgdon received silver in their Chapter Service Project. Callie
Brochu received silver for Illustrated Talk. Mackenzi
Prina entered Focus on Child and received gold. Lexi
Arsenault and Julia Cormier received gold for their Promote and
Publicize project. In addition, Jolene Levesque, along with
Densi van Gerena, received gold in Life Event Planning for their
Homecoming project. Not only did students receive medals
for their efforts, but they also qualified to compete at the
FCCLA National Convention should they decide to attend.
Desiree Wentworth worked hard reporting the chapter efforts to
the state as the Connection Team Reporter and received second
place for her work. The CBNA FCCLA chapter received first
place in the state for Community Service with its clothing drive
and second place in Chapter Participation for the year. Students
who did not compete at the conference were active volunteers and
helped to make this year’s state conference a successful event.
All students worked incredibly hard and their advisors Mandy
Morales, Toni Canfield and Jackie Lambert are very proud of
their achievements.
Finally, the CBNA chapter of FCCLA would like to take a moment
to recognize the following seniors who worked throughout the
year to be active members. These students wore FCCLA sashes at
graduation to represent their efforts in many areas of FCCLA,
including community service, fundraising, completing the Power
of One, and demonstrating proficiency in Family and Consumer
courses: Lexi Arsenault, Callie Brochu, Julia Cormier,
Nicole Hodgdon, Jolene Levesque, Kenzi Prina, Ashley Reiff,
Kayleigh Sherman, and Densi van Gerena. The chapter will miss
their effort and presence as CBNA FCCLA members and wishes them
the best of luck with their future endeavors.

I was saddened to see the letter in
last week’s paper accusing the school of squandering funds on
bats for the school teams. Unfortunately, some inaccurate
information was conveyed to the public.
After 18 years of working in the sporting goods industry I can
assure you that $50 Walmart bats are heavy and do not stand up
to the force these young men can put on them. $150 is actually
in the low range for a quality bat these days. My son has
been on the school team for 2 years and they never had a $300
bat paid for by school.
I know the purpose of Tim’s letter was
to get people fired up and involved and I always respect his
passion for our town.
I would love to see more energy go
into relaying positive info like the fact that Mike bought the
team shirts, snacks for every game and pizza with his own money
because of his love for these kids and baseball. Mike also make
sure that every single kid kept his grades up to be part of the
baseball team.
For the first time in a very long time every kid on the team
passed. These kids are definitely not spoiled, they are very
thankful and respectful of their equipment and coaches.
We need to remember that we will
continue to lose talented people who are involved in town when
we slander their reputations for no reason. Hate breeds Hate and
that’s not the kind of example we should be setting. I
wholeheartedly agree it’s important to be fiscally responsible
but remember there are always 3 sides to a story.
Thanks,
Heather Heigis

“Northwood School is awash in funds,”
wrote Mr. Janderbeur in his latest rant, and I hope you all got
as good a chuckle out of that as I did.
Let’s look at Mr. Janderbeur’s
complaints: he is upset that Northwood School had underspent
their allotted funds, carefully budgeting and being responsible
with the amount that Northwood citizens voted as acceptable.
Certainly if NES had spent all the funds, Mr. Janderbeur would
have taken issue (and imagine if there had been a shortfall),
also, Northwood Elementary apparently had the audacity to
purchase something that they’ve requested for three years and
had to wait until the funds were available to do so. Mr.
Janderbeur fails to mention what this something is, leaving us
to imagine how unrelated to academics it is - I personally am
picturing math books or something else equally outrageous. I
wasn’t sure about his 40% higher than average number, so I went
to the NH DOE website and while the most current Cost Per
Student By District report [2014-2015] shows the state average
is $14,581 per elementary student, Northwood’s cost is $13,846.
Call me crazy, but this looks to be a LESS THAN AVERAGE student
cost to me.
I suppose everyone has a right to
voice their opinions, and I like the philosophy of diligent,
reasonable, and responsible accountability for our school, yet I
personally grow tired of the ceaseless negativity. Like an
endlessly barking dog in a neighbor’s yard, I dream of the day
when the pointless noise quiets.
