Harvey Lake Woman’s Club News

Submitted By Lucy Silva And Roberta Stearns

On April 1 Harvey Lake Woman’s Club hosted their Annual Reciprocity Day meeting inviting eight area clubs.  Fifty-eight women attended.  The program, presented by  Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s  music department, was greatly enjoyed by all, as were the edible offerings provided by the ladies of the club.

Book scholarship application forms have been delivered to the guidance department at CBNA.  The club will be donating to the Otis Arnold Scholarship, to the GFWC-NH Scholarship, and to the Tilton Veterans’ Home.

The club has been invited to the Deerfield Women’s Club Annual Silver Tea on May 4.  Joanne Sullivan of Reflections Salon and Spa will be the speaker.  Concord Hospital’s Volunteer Recognition Day will be on May 21 this year. We will be recognized for our hours of service and donations of comfort pillows and baby layette items.

The HLWC May 6 meeting will be the annual luncheon at the Red Apple Restaurant in Concord.  Members should meet at the Northwood Congregational Church at 11:15 a.m. to carpool to the restaurant.  Anyone who has not paid in advance should contact Joann Bailey at 942-8661.

HLWC is a service organization and a member of General Federation of Women’s Clubs-NH.  Its object is to promote sociability and culture and to make itself a  power for good in the community.  All women in the area are invited to join us.

Northwood Firefighters Use New Equipment

At Prescribed Fire

Northwood Fire.jpg

Northwood firefighters receive valuable training during a recent control burn

event and use equipment purchased with grant funding.

Northwood Fire Rescue has received two forestry grants in the past three years through the Division of Forest and Lands of the US Forest Service. The Volunteer Fire Assistance grants have allowed the department to purchase items that assist fire departments to have up-to-date gear and essential tools on hand for firefighting.

In 2012, the department purchased all new personal protective clothing- helmets, goggles, gloves, Nomex pants and shirts with the grant funds.  Members previously had to use their own clothes or buy their own Nomex clothing. Nomex is a flame resistant fabric created by Dupont to help give firefighters protection when exposed to serious hazards like flash fire and molten metal splash. It is very useful when fighting structure fires or forest/grass fires, which require walking through areas that are burning.

The grant received in 2014 allowed the purchase of a portable pump, new hose and new fittings. The new pump allows firefighters to easily transport the pump into hard to get areas and “suck water” out of any type of water source.

The recent prescribed fire (controlled burn) was conducted at Harmony Hill Farm, and covered over 10 acres of field. The effort provides real life training for firefighters as they can see how quick conditions can change and also see how weather, topography, and fuel types affect fire. It is good for the ecosystem; a controlled fire is beneficial in several ways, as it promotes growth of trees, grass and other plants by adding natural nutrients back into the soil, removes unwanted invasive plants and helps prevent trees from overcrowding.  It also minimizes spread of ticks and reduces fuel build-up over a period of time that can cause extreme and sudden fire activity.
