Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, “Much-to-Do”

FFA chapter Receives Grant

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy “Much-to-Do” FFA chapter in Northwood, New Hampshire, has been awarded a $2000.00 grant from the National FFA Organization’s Living to Serve: Environmental Grant program. The chapter has developed a year-long service-learning project to meet local environmental needs. The Living to Serve: Environmental Grants are provided through funding from corporate sponsors CSX and the Donaldson Foundation as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The “Much-to-Do” project includes plans to start a composting promotion.  Consumers consume, but often times the remains of such consumption are discarded as waste with not return value to the original consumer.  The goal is to educate others about the benefits of repurposing such waste into compost with both traditional measure and tumblers but also with the use of composting worms.

By attending local farmers markets, distributing printed materials and speaking with visitors, the chapter hopes to inform others how they too can become stewards of their own food waste.  They will also be utilizing some of the returns here in the CBNA greenhouse and classroom.  The long term goal is to not only continue in the educational values of this important task, but to someday be in a position where the chapter is able to share this repurposed food waste with others for use in their homes and gardens. The project illustrates the final line of the FFA motto, which is “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve”, by encouraging FFA members to unite in service within their communities. The Living to Serve: Environmental Grants take community service one step further to service-learning, which provides a meaningful way to apply leadership and education skills learned in school and FFA. More information about the program can be found at

Service of Hope

On Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 4:00pm Northwood Congregational Church, UCC will hold a Service of Hope, for all those who grieve.  All are welcome to participate in this service which will acknowledge that the Christmas holiday season can be a very difficult time for people who have experienced some type of loss or grief.  This grief can result from many things - loss of a loved one, loss of a beloved pet, loss of a job or the loss of good health.

During the service we will proclaim that God knows our grief, anger, frustration and is there to comfort us through our experiences and grief.  God’s love for us is omnipresent and God will make all things new – this is the promise of the resurrection.

This service will include a welcome by NCC clergy, prayer, scripture readings and poems, silent reflections, candle lighting, benediction/blessing and silent closing.

All members of the community are welcome to join for this important and timely service of hope.

Northwood Congregational Church is located at 881 First NH Turnpike (Route 4) in Northwood, NH just east of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy.

The snow/inclement weather date is Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 7:00 pm.  If weather is questionable call the church office 603-942-7116

Harvey Lake Woman’s Club News

Submitted By Lucy Silva

HLWC’s November 5th meeting featured Susan Pratt Smith, stained glass artist, who has won awards nationwide for her art work.

We welcomed new member Alva Stalker of Lakeshore Drive, Northwood.

Again this year, the club will send mittens and hats to the St Charles’ Children’s Home in Rochester. Those who care to, may also contribute clothing items. Call Betty Smith for sizes.

The annual Christmas Tea will be held at the Northwood Congregational Church Fellowship Hall at Twelve noon on December 10th. Please note the time and date as both have been changed this year.  Hostesses should bring a cup, saucer, and plate. Call Elaine Covey with any questions. As always, don’t forget the food pantry.
