Northwood DAR.jpg

Else Cilley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, members JoAnn Brown, Barbara Frangione, Peg Franz, Norma Perkins and Lynne Sweet work on a few puzzles during the April meeting held at Havenwood, Concord, NH. Photo taken by Regent Jan Gilman.

The Else Cilley chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had its first meeting of the year at the Happenings room at Havenwood, Concord, NH. Resident and long time member of the chapter, Ann Chaplin, hosted the meeting along with her daughter, Susann, and Regent Jan Gilman. The wormen’s Issures program focused on keeping minds alert and ended with Mrs. Gilman giving each member a booklet filled with puzzles to do, a recommended strategy for warding off forgetfulness.

The business meeting included the President General’s message read by Vice Regent Barbara Frangione and a National Defense message prepared by Peg Franz. Reports of officers and committee chairpersons were given. Business discussion centered around necessary repairs that have been done and still need to be completed at the chapter Historic Building. Members shared fundraising idea.

The next meeting will be held at the chapter’s historic Nottingham Schoolhouse in Nottingham, NH on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 1:30 pm. chapter winner of the DAR American History Essay Contest, Haley Donovan, of Timberlane Regional Middle School will be recognized. Haley is a resident of Sandown, NH. Refreshments and a Trivia game will be part of the awards ceremony.

Women interested in joining the DAR are encouraged to attend a meeting. The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through education. The public is always welcome to attend. For more information, visit our website at www.freewebs.com/ecilleydar

HLWC NEWS

On May 1 the women of the Harvey Lake Woman’s Club traveled to Concord for a tour of the New Hampshire State House. Tour guide, Virginia Drew, did an outstanding job of presenting our beautiful capitol building. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day in spite of the rain and was topped off with a stop for ice cream on the way back to Northwood.

At the annual meeting of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-NH our local president Genevieve Rogers was designated the honoree from HLWC. She was also appointed to the nominating committee of GFWC-NH.

The annual HLWC Book Scholarship awarded to a deserving Northwood female graduating senior was presented to Allura LeBlanc.

The June 5 annual luncheon will again be held at the Red Apple Restaurant in East Concord. Meet to car pool at the Northwood Congregational Church by 11:15 a.m. Plan to pay Elaine Covey $11 at the restaurant.

HLWC is a service organization and a member of General Federation of Women’s Clubs-NH. Its object is to promote sociability and culture and to make itself a power for good in the community. All women in the area are invited to join us.
