Recently the Northwood School Board going over budgets was shown the default budget with unreal numbers. Board members questioned the default numbers and the Superintendent said, “Nobody checks the default.”

The reason for that is the faulty legislation which puts the two boards in charge of making the default budget to be approved or checked by no one.   Our legislature who wrote the laws didn’t provide for any checks on the Default Budget, even the Budget Committee has no say over it.

The law needs to be changed but for now citizens have the option of circulating a petition R.S.A. 40-14-b, which if voted, allows the town’s budget committee to make up the default budget. Who better than the budget committee who ask the questions and understand the budgets of the town and school.

I will circulate Deerfield’s petition and am willing to share the petition with anyone asking.

Sincerely

Harriet E. Cady

Home for the Holidays

It’s that magical time of year, when we wonder both what Santa will be bringing us and how we are going to pay our semi-annual real estate tax bill.

Almost a century ago, Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of “Little House” author Laura Ingalls Wilder, encountered an Albanian tribe called the Dukhagini, to whom the idea of home ownership was unknown.  She told them that “in America a man owns a house. They could not believe it; they admired America. They had heard of its marvels; during the recent world war they had seen with their eyes the airplanes from that fabulous land.

They questioned me shrewdly. I had to admit that an American pays the tribe [taxes] for possession of a house. This seemed to concede that the American tribe does own the house.[T]heir high opinion of my country was restored.”

It’s comforting to know, in this special season, that the Dukhagini would feel right at home here.

At Chesley Memorial Library

Northwood book signing.jpg

The Chesley Memorial Library presents a book signing of local author Don Silva on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the library from 11 am to 1 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

A Trail of Dreams Thoreau in Love is a historical romance set in Concord, Massachusetts, in the mid 19th century. Henry David Thoreau struggles to escape his domineering mother and find love while seeking his dreams. Will Lucy Brown, the older woman, be his soul-mate? Will it be Ellen Sewall, the young girl, Mary Russell, the governess, or Margaret Fuller, the feminist? Who will be Thoreau’s true love?

Silva taught writing at UNH. He published Black Kestrel, an adventure story, in 2006.
