Saddleback Mountain Lions Club Plans Free Eye Testing Of
Pre-Schoolers
One of the major objectives of Lions International
and Saddleback Mountain Lions Club is prevention of blindness. Early
detection and treatment are key in fighting amblyopia which, if not
caught before your child reaches 4 years of age, may be
irreversible.
What is amblyopia? In short, when the child’s eyes
send different sight signals to the developing brain, it can shut
out one eye (mostly unnoticed by parent or doctor). Lions of New
Hampshire have special cameras to photograph your child’s eyes and
volunteer eye doctors study the photos. If there is a problem
detected, they give you a referral to an eye doctor of your choice.
This test is free (which is a $300 value), but if your child is
affected, the test is priceless. Remember, that after 4 years, it
can be irreversible and your child could be blind in one eye life.
Saddleback Lions plan to have their annual testing of children 4
months to 4 years of age on Monday, May 10th, 2010, which is the day
after Mother’s Day at Chadbourn’s Restaurant on Route 4 in
Northwood. Near to 100 have been tested in the past 4 years with 4
referrals made. If you know you will attend, please let us know so
that we will have enough film on hand. For information and
reservation, call Lions Bill and Judy Lounsbury at 942-8511. Any
child can come - 4 months to 4 years! Testing is FREE.

First
Annual Community Cleanup Day a Success
Lucas
Morrill was one of the many volunteers helping to clean up the area
near Northwood Lake, along Lake Shore Drive.
On
Earth Day 2010, volunteers from Hannaford Supermarket and the Loon
Estates Cooperative picked up 20+ bags of roadside trash, plus tires
and other bulky trash, as the Town of Northwood conducted its first
annual Earth Day Community Cleanup Day on April 22.
The cleanup
was conducted at the Park and Ride located at the intersection of
Rtes. 4 and 202, along both sides of Rte. 202 to Rte. 202A, and
along Lake Shore Drive. The cleanup was held in collaboration with
the New Hampshire the Beautiful/Litter-Free NH organization. Blue
trash bags were provided by the program and Hannaford provided
refreshments for the volunteers. Thank you to all volunteers for
helping make Northwood an even better place to live.

Obituaries
John F.
Savage
John F. Savage, “Jack”, 63, died peacefully at home with
the family he raised in Northwood. He was a lifelong advocate for
sustainable living based on the feeling that what is good for the
individual is also good for the global community.
He worked most
recently driving a medical van for AMR of Somersworth. In recent
years, he also worked with disabled adults.
His passion was as a
citizen advocate for healthcare and the environment through weekly
letters to Congress and 18 years as a field manager for League of
Conservation Voters. A private man, he loved cookies, little
children, film, history, Car Talk and working in the woods. He
possessed a mellow, uncomplaining nature with a very dry sense of
humor that complemented his wife’s noisier social activism.
He is
survived by his wife and soulmate of 42 years, Patricia De Gruttola
Savage, 60; and his five children, James Savage, 35, of Dover, NH;
Katherine Savage, 32 , of Philadelphia, PA; Anna Savage, 27, of
Ithaca, NY; Sophia Savage, 25, of Hollywood, CA; and Schuyler
Savage, 22, of Northwood, NH; eight siblings; and 22 nieces and
nephews.
A celebration of his life was held on Sunday, May 2,
2010, at the Governor’s Inn in Rochester, NH.
Donations in his
name may be sent to any of the Haiti Relief organizations.
