Preschool Openings!

Now is the time to think about enrolling your child in preschool! The Center School in Northwood is accepting registrations for the 2009-2010 school year. The Center School is a parent cooperative preschool located next to the town hall in Northwood, which provides a developmental program for three, four, and five year-olds of Northwood and surrounding towns. There are openings in our two-day (T/Th) program and three-day (M/W/F) morning programs. Act now before they are filled! A Bake Sale just in time for Mother’s Day dinner. It will be May 9, Saturday, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Northwood Narrows Advent Christian Church on School Street (Route 7). This sale will be sponsored by the Ladies Mission Group. This is a good time-saver for you and will help increase our giving to Home and Foreign Missions work. See you there!

Change In New Hampshire Childhood Vaccination School Requirements Immunization Program

Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year … a child who is 11 years of age or older, must receive a one-time dose of Tdap vaccine if it has been 5 years or longer since the last documented dose of a tetanus immunization.  If a child has a medical contraindication to pertussis vaccine, the child shall receive a vaccine that only covers tetanus and diphtheria. All incoming kindergarten students, 1st graders, and 6th graders who do not have a history of chickenpox disease will be required to have two valid doses of chickenpox (varicella) vaccine. Kindergartners who have had chickenpox will be required to show documentation of immunity by a confirming laboratory test. History of disease as reported by a healthcare provider, or parent, is acceptable for 1st grade through 12th grade, and should be documented in the student’s school record.… contact their primary care provider to see that all immunizations are up to date prior to the first day of school. The State of New Hampshire does allow for children with medical and religious exemptions. However, during an outbreak of a communicable disease for which immunization is required, by law, an exempted child may be asked to stay at home for a number of days. Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.

Avoid close contact…with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick…You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
Cover your mouth and nose…with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Clean your hands.  Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Practice other good health habits.  Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Healthy snacks – Students often come to the nurse’s office looking for food. We rely on your assistance in donating healthy items for the children to snack on (crackers, cereal, cereal bars, and granola bars.

Northwood PTA And Northwood Drama Club

The Northwood Elementary School Drama Club and the Northwood PTA partnered in hosting a murder mystery dinner theater event … The Beauty Pageant.

The event was a rounding success with a near sell out crowd.  Ninety-five community supporters showed up to support the 15 member cast.  The cast did an outstanding job in keeping the audience members guessing. 

The Northwood PTA and the Northwood Drama Club extend a “BIG” thank you to our community sponsors.  Hannafords Supermarket of Northwood was very generous donating nearly all of the food items.  Our very special Mrs. Jean Lane donated pink lemonade and many more baked goodies for our desserts. 

The Northwood PTA is proud to have been a part of this performance and is happy to report that the group is now much closer to their fundraising goal to purchase “wing curtains”.

Northwood Ponders Fireworks Ordinance

The Town is in the process of considering the approval of a new regulation requiring residents or taxpayers (landowners) to obtain a permit from the Fire Department in order to display fireworks. The new ordinance would place restrictions on the event, including hours of discharge, minimum distances from buildings, utilities and woodlands, and would require the written approval from abutters. The Board of Selectmen held the first of two public hearings on the matter recently and generally speaking the attendees supported the idea.

From time to time I plan to reach out to you when I need your input on important matters, so I can vote accordingly. Also, many of these changes have a tendency to move through the approval process with little public awareness. If you would like a copy of the proposed fireworks ordinance please email me at [email protected] or drop me a note. I will share all of your comments with fellow board members.

On another note, the Town is considering the addition of requiring excavation and blasting permits. These items are separate and not part of the proposed fireworks ordinance. Please contact me if these items are of interest to you. Thank-you.

NALMC Fire Management Workshop

NALMC is an informal group of private and public neighbors in the Northwood area who work together across property boundaries to maintain and enhance the ecological, social, recreational, and economic resources of the local landscape.

On April 13, 2009, the Northwood Area Land Management Collaborative (NALMC) hosted a workshop on controlled burning of farm fields at Harmony Hill Farm in Northwood. This annual field burning is done in conjunction with the Northwood and Epsom fire departments.  Nearly 40 firefighters and other interested fire professionals from around the state attended.  This burn event is the largest grassland fire training event held in NH.

The workshop gives local fire departments an opportunity to train fire fighters in open field fires, at the same time as it serves as a land conservation and open space management practice for Harmony Hill Farm.

Stewart Yeaton, Epsom Fire Chief and training event organizer said “the training is invaluable practice that you can’t get in a classroom; and it helps the landowner to keep his fields open. It is a win-win situation.”

On Monday, May 11th, Saddleback Mountain Lions Club will host a spaghetti supper at Chadbourne’s Restaurant on Route 4 in Northwood, NH, between 5:00-7:00 p.m. The cost will be $7.95/adults and $5.00/children and the meal will include your choice of meatballs/sausage with salad, garlic bread and dessert.

Monies raised will benefit the blind, handicapped and needy in the towns of Northwood, Nottingham, Deerfield, Barrington, Strafford and Lee.

So, come on down...treat yourself to a great meal and help us help others....together we can make a difference!
