Girl Scout
Registration
It’s Girl Scout
registration time again. As in past years registration will be held at
Northwood School during Parent Night/Ice Cream Social on September 24.
Leaders will be available to answer questions and register girls in all age
groups from kindergarten to 12th grade. Last year Northwood Girl Scouts were
very active with approximately 90 girls registered. Activities included a
camporee for all ages, crafts, outdoor activities, and of course our famous
selling of Girl Scout cookies. More than that, the girls had fun, shared new
experiences, learned new skills, and made new friends. Activities and
service projects are designed to promote the basic ideals of Girl Scouting,
to build character, confidence, to be courageous and strong. We hope that
your daughter will join us for new experiences and fun. For more information
please call Beth Philbrick at 942-5417 (evenings) or Gloria Jewett at
303-5635.
Watershed
Autumn Activities
The September
neighborhood meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed Association was held at
the home of President Jim Vaillancourt. Helen Ash was elected to fill the
vacant Treasurer office.
Committee chairmen reported on committee activites. Pete Jones, Membership,
reported the Association has 147 members. Discussion followed on how to
increase membership for maximum lake protection.
E.coli was high in the August water samplings of the lake along the Lynn
Grove and Old Dump Road areas, according to Water Quality Chairman, Andrea
Tomlinson. Two water samplings are scheduled for September. A regular
sampling and a rain sampling. Andrea gave special thanks to July testing
volunteer helpers Ray and Cheryl Grandmaison and August testing volunteer
helpers, Mirabelle and Wayne Bowden.
Yard Sale Chairman, Pam Papadinis, reported on the October 4 Yard Sale to be
held at the Northwood Self-Storage. Marie Damon, 463-5929, will arrange for

All proceeds go to the Northwood Lake Watershed Association.
Northwood Town Hall will be the next meeting location, October 18, 9 AM to
11 AM. Join us for this strategic planning meeting for next year.

Know that this is
going to be a tough budget year for NH towns.
But I found a great idea. I was reading about McCain’s Vice Presidential
choice, and I think we are missing a great opportunity for our towns. She
hired a lobbyist for her town of 7000 when she was mayor (well, in Alaska,
it was called a city, there aren’t very many people or towns in Alaska), and
got lots of money from the federal government.
So I propose that each of our towns include in their budgets for next year
money to hire lobbyists. That way we can be sure we will have enough money
to fix our roads and bridges, take care of the snow and ice, build nice new
safety buildings for fire and police departments, and maybe even sports
complexes! All without raising property taxes.
If Sarah Palin can do it, and keep her reputation as a reformer, we can do
it too. Alaska gets $1.87 per person for every dollar they send to
Washington, but we only get about $0.75 here in NH. We can do better!

John McCain and Sarah Palin have an ad touting the fact that they battled
the Republican party to reform the governments in Washington and Alaska,
respectively. Now John Sununu has an ad touting his battles against the
Republicans to stand with New Hampshire.
Well, if fighting the Republicans is such a strong qualification for office,
why not do it right and vote Democratic?
When even the Republicans don’t want to be Republican, you know it’s time
for the Democrats.

Mrs. Carroll’s Third
Grade
The classroom spent the first week of school getting acquainted with each other
and learning about the expectations of 3rd grade. The students were able to
write 2 wishes/goals for a great year on a penny and attach it to our wishing
well bulletin board. We started a community unit in Social Studies by finding
out that our classroom is a community that is a part of our school community.
Technology News From Mrs. Albert
The Ted Hebert’s Music Mart gave a demonstration of musical instruments to
Northwood School fifth graders on Monday, September 8. Fifth graders in
technology class used Power Point to develop a presentation based on a
‘favorite’ musical instrument shown during the demonstration.
Mrs. Magnusson’s Kindergarten
Our first days were wonderful. Friday morning the class had a fire drill and
thought it was the best part of the day! We have been busy meeting our school
community members. There are lots of faces and names to remember! We have two
special class pets: Moo-Moo and Spunky. Ask a student about them. Our fish
tank will soon have real fish.
We are learning about school rules and routines. Our first science unit is the
life cycle of the Monarch caterpillar. We have been “bug hunting” and have many
caterpillars and chrysalis in our class as we wait and watch.
Mrs. Sarno - It is great to see all the returning and new students! Students
have been writing, reading, sharing, and participating in class discussions.
Students have written and shared haiku and their writing and sketches about
summer activities. Something new this year is the Glencoe Literature text, and
students have been reading folk tales, informational text, and short stories so
far.
World Language News
Hola and Salut! It is my pleasure to announce that once again, all students at
Northwood School will be participating in World Language classes as part of the
Related Arts schedule. Like last year, all students in Kindergarten through the
fourth grade will be learning Spanish once per week for a portion of the year.
In the lower grades our goal is to expose students to the Hispanic culture and
language in order to heighten their awareness of themselves as members of an
exciting and wonderfully diverse world.
In the fifth and sixth grades, each homeroom group of students is offered the
choice to study French or Spanish. Each class votes separately for the language
that they would like to study during their six-week rotation. The results of
Mrs. Fredette’s homeroom are in, and the students chose… French! After three
short days, they can already greet one other and introduce themselves in French!
Fantastique!
The students in Mr. Robertson’s eighth grade homeroom have reviewed the French
that they learned last year, and they have already begun to learn new words and
phrases related to food and drink. After completing two weeks of French, we will
start a two-week introduction to Spanish. We will end our course with two weeks
of Latin. This course is meant to give our eighth graders a small (mais
délicieux) flavor of the three World Language classes offered at Coe-Brown.
Fourteen seventh graders have begun Part One of a two-year program that will
enable them to take Spanish 2 as freshmen at Coe-Brown. This is a rigorous
program that requires students to take the Coe-Brown Spanish I CP Midterm Exam
at the end of this year and to take the Coe-Brown Final Exam at the end of the
eighth grade year. Those students who excel within this class could also be
recommended for the Honors Spanish track in high school, which could potentially
earn students college credit through an AP Spanish program. Throughout the year
these students will be using the most recent technology available as a
supplement to their textbooks. ¡Qué divertido!
Sixteen eighth grade students have begun Part Two of the Spanish I CP course. It
is my pleasure to announce that some of these students will be traveling to
Spain in July of 2009! In preparation for this trip, the class will be learning
about all of the sites listed on the itinerary. Students will be researching and
presenting projects on the various attractions of Madrid, Segovia, Sevilla,
Córdoba, Barcelona, Toledo, Granada and Fuengirola. ¡Olé!
As always, it is my pleasure to serve the Northwood community once again this
year as the World Language teacher. Feel free to contact me (Becky Shoup) at
942-5488 or at: rshoup@ northwood.k12.nh.us if you have any language or travel
experiences that you would like to share with our students! Gracias and merci!
