Northwood Farmer's Market

Northwood's first Farmers Market was a resounding success.

Northwood's first ever Farmers Market was a great success. Residents and passers-by on busy Rt. 4 the day before the 4th of July enjoyed the fruits (and vegetables, and chickens, and eggs and on and on...!) of our local farms and businesses, music, and a real sense of community.

The next market will be August 7th, so keep your eyes open for notices.

We plan three more for 2008 and a full weekly schedule for summer and fall 2009.

Northwood Congregational Church Annual Auction

Northwood author and storyteller Rebecca Rule will be showing her skills as auctioneer at the upcoming Northwood Congregational Church annual auction. She captivates her audience so there is no telling who may end up with the bargains and treasures that will be sold under her "Rule" as auctioneer.

The event will take place on Saturday, August 23 starting with a chicken barbeque at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to write the date on your calendar now so you won't miss a minute of the good food and fun. The church is located on Rt. 4, east of Coe-Brown Academy.

Else Cilley Chapter D.A.R.

The Else Cilley Chapter D.A.R. in Nottingham hosted a successful Antique Appraisal Program on June 21st at the Historic Nottingham Square Schoolhouse. Mr. Dan Olmstead gave many appraisals and told stories of good and bad purchases and how the antique business is changing.

Former Regent Barbara Frangione helped with the genealogy for several people who were interested. Soups, sandwiches, drinks and desserts were offered for sale and the day was considered a success.

The regular meeting was called to order at 1:10 p.m. and the usual business was discussed.

A flag flown over the Washington, D.C. Capitol was obtained by chairman Jean Lane from Senator Sununu and given to the Cornerstone Christian School by Susan Masison.

There was discussion about the correct procedure when the flag passes by, as in a parade, and when singing the "Star Spangled Banner." After searching the Internet, it was stated that at both times, the right hand is placed over the heart; if a man is wearing a hat, he removes it and places his hand over his heart; service men and women salute; and a new law passed in 2007, all veterans salute to show that they have served.

The next meeting will be held on July 23rd at 12 p.m. This is the Annual Picnic Lunch, bring a sandwich or salad. Dessert and punch will be served. Rebecca Shoup will talk on her visit to the Galapagos Islands. Visitors and prospective members welcome at the Old Schoolhouse on the Square.

Northwood Lake Watershed Annual Meeting

Jeff holds a joint appointment as a Research Scientist in the UNH Freshwater Biology Group and as a Water Resources Specialist with the UNH Cooperative Extension. Jeff will be speaking about landscaping techniques we can use to enhance and protect the quality of the water as it passes over our land on its journey to the lake. After Jeff's presentation, Northwood Lake Watershed Association members will participate in the business meeting. At 5:30 p.m. all members are invited to a barbecue. To help our planning, please RSVP Jim or Pat at 942-5365.

An Update For Non-Members

In 1992 the Northwood Lake Watershed Association was formed to preserve and protect the quality of Northwood Lake and its surroundings for the collective interest for lake users. Since then our activities have included the monitoring and treatment of the ever present milfoil in our lake, water quality testing through the Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP), invasive screening through the Lake Host Program, as well as providing educational resources to our members and the lake community at large. Membership is is open to anyone who has an interest in the lake. You don't have to live on the lake to join. Annual dues are $20 per member ( a member can be an individual, family, business or organization). Your money will go to things like milfoil treatment, annual lake vegetation survey and water quality testing programs.

Join us at the Northwood Town Beach on July 19. www.northwoodlake.com
