Dear friends, family, community, and supporters of childhood
cancer research:
Jeremy O’Neil, a resident of Gilmanton NH was
diagnosed with leukemia 2 years ago at the age of 6 and still has
another 15 months of chemotherapy to go. There are several other
children in the Lakes Region battling various forms of childhood cancer. Jeremy is
participating in a fundraising event on behalf of St. Baldrick’s for
childhood cancer research.
This year it is on Saturday, June 4,
2011 at the Gilford Youth Center. Please help support Team Jeremy at
http://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/jeremy, any other team or come to the
event. There will be raffles with many great prizes, music, and food.
St.
Baldrick’s raises money every year to help fund some of the best childhood
cancer research experts in the world. Most people are unaware that cancer is
the number one killer of children in the United States, after accidental
death. Some children with cancer have fairly high survival rates and some do
not.
Please help St. Baldrick’s establish less toxic treatments as well
as a better chance of survival for all childhood cancer patients.
Thank
you so very much.
Diane O’Neil

Thermalscan Is Recognized With Energy Star® Awards
Lakes Region
ThermalScan is pleased to announce that it has received a 2011 Home
Performance with ENERGY STAR Century Club Award from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
This Century Club
Award recognizes Lakes Region ThermalScan as one of a select few companies
throughout the United States, and the only New Hampshire company, that has
improved the energy efficiency of more than 100 homes in the past year
through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. Home
Performance with ENERGY STAR, sponsored locally by the New Hampshire
Utilities offers homeowners a comprehensive, whole house approach to
improving energy efficiency and comfort, while saving money on utility bills
and helping to protect the environment.
Chandler von Schrader, with the
ENERGY STAR Program at EPA, announced “These Century Club Contractors are
industry leaders committed to using building science to maximize energy
savings, comfort and sustainability. By making our existing housing
stock more energy efficient, these Century Club Contractors are at the
forefront of our nation’s efforts to reduce pollution generated from power
plants that provide energy for our communities.”
As a participating
contractor in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, Lakes Region
ThermalScan utilizes specialized training and diagnostic tools to inspect
homes inside and out to determine where improvements are needed.
Rather than focusing on a single problem, like an old heating or cooling
system, not enough insulation in the attic, or leaky windows, they look at
how improvements throughout a home can work together to give homeowners the
best results. Depending on the improvements selected by the homeowner,
saving 20% or more on their annual utility bills is possible.
Paul
Callahan, the owner of Lakes Region ThermalScan states: “I would like
to thank the program mangers at the Public Services of New Hampshire
and Unitil for supporting small business participation in this valuable
program. The success of this program has been and will continue to be
the result of a team effort and dedication of every person involved.
From the workers in the attic to the program managers and everyone one in
between, it has been the combined dedication and efforts by all involved
that makes the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program a success”
Lakes Region ThermalScan is a veteran owned small business that began
operations in 2008. The proprietor served eleven years as an Officer
with the United States Marine Corps and is a Gulf War Veteran. Relying
upon military traditions and values, honor and integrity has been the
guiding business principle of Lakes Region ThermalScan from its inception.
With respect to our members of our Nation’s Armed Forces, Lakes Region
ThermalScan provides discounts to all veterans and active duty service
members.
Lakes Region ThermalScan maintains RESNET Home Energy Rater,
and BPI Building Shell Analyst certifications. In addition to
providing high level energy auditing and diagnostic services for existing
buildings, Lakes Region ThermalScan also conducts ENERGY STAR
certification and consultation services for new home construction.
ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in
1992 as a voluntary market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions through increased energy efficiency.
Today, in partnership
with the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR offers businesses and
consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect
the environment for future generations. More than 12,000 organizations are
ENERGY STAR partners committed to improving the energy efficiency of
products, homes, buildings and businesses.

ENERGY STAR, visit www.energystar.gov

Letter To The Editor
Are you interested in understanding how our zoning
ordinances work in Gilmanton? Would you like to learn more about how
Town government works?
The Zoning Board of Adjustment exists to provide
the flexibility required to make a zoning ordinance both effective and fair
to all property owners in Town. The Board is looking for Alternate
members, who participate in all hearings and vote when one or more of the
regular ZBA members is absent.
Service on the ZBA is an
excellent opportunity to learn the ropes, as well as to become familiar with
areas of our community you have not previously known. The Board meets
one evening each month (unless there are no applications in a given month).
Members visit the properties whose owners have asked for a variance or
special exception from the terms of the ordinance. Thus service
on the ZBA is not a major time commitment.
If you want to find out what
the ZBA does, attend a meeting, normally on the 3rd Thursday of the month,
but May’s meeting is scheduled for the 2nd Thursday, May 12. Ask any
Board member or our Clerk for more detail. The agenda
appears on the Town website. The selectmen are responsible for
appointing members to the ZBA. Contact their office to express your
interest.
Responsibly administered regulations are important for guiding
development in Gilmanton while preserving the special character of the Town.
After three terms on the ZBA I have stepped down. It has been a
privilege to serve over the past decade, and it is time to turn the
responsibility over to others. Please consider volunteering.
Carolyn Baldwin
