Year-Round Library Holds Successful Fundraiser
Local Gilmanton Chef, Steve Owens of Remedy House, peruses the
dessert selection at the recent February IceBreaker.
The
Gilmanton Year-Round Library Association would like to thank all those who
braved terrible winter weather conditions on Saturday, February 5th to
attend the Library’s February Icebreaker. The name of the event turned
out to be prophetic, since a late day ice storm made road conditions very
slick. Nonetheless, about 70 people turned out for an evening of fun,
music, and good food, as well as a silent auction and raffle at the
Gilmanton Academy. The Academy was beautifully decorated with flowers,
white tablecloths and sparkling lights.
Many thanks
go out to the local businesses, craftsmen and friends of the Year-Round
Library who contributed many unique and interesting auction and raffle
items. Library volunteers also prepared a wonderful array of food and
helped decorate the auditorium at the Academy. In addition to raising
a substantial amount for the Library, it was also an opportunity to meet
neighbors, socialize and enjoy an evening out.
Gilmanton Snowshoe Hike On February 26th!
Gilmanton residents taking a snowshoeing break.
The
Gilmanton Conservation Commission is sponsoring a snowshoe hike at the Ella
Stroud Memorial Forest on Shellcamp Road on Saturday, February 26th (with a
blizzard date of Sunday, February 27th) at 10:00 a.m. The hike will be
facilitated by Matt Tarr, a professional Wildlife Biologist and Forester
with UNH Cooperative Extension, and Gilmanton resident.
This 34.9
acre parcel was given to the Town by Paul Stroud in memory of his late wife
Ella in 2007. The 3/4 mile loop trail was completed as an Eagle Scout
project by Gilmanton graduate Cody Hook in 2010. The wetland area on
the property is one of the many special features of the Ella Stroud Memorial
Forest. It is inhabited by black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) trees, also known
as black gum which are uncommon in New Hampshire. The hike will last about 1
to 1.5 hours and is open to families and all snowshoe abilities.
Come and
explore this special place with us! There will be some extra snowshoes
and snacks on hand for those who need them. Parking will be limited to
Shellcamp Road in front of the Buzzell Cemetery so please carpool. For
questions, please contact Erin at
[email protected].
We’re Talking Trash!
Attention
all Gilmanton residents. The Gilmanton Recycling Committee is “talking
trash” and they’d like you to join them.
As you may
know, the Recycling Committee has been meeting monthly since May 2010 and
they’ve been investigating a variety of recycling options that are currently
available. Their goal is to educate and inform the residents of
Gilmanton of the benefits of recycling more and reducing the amount of trash
generated in town.
To that
end, the Recycling Committee has created an informative Power Point
presentation and they’d like you to take a few moments to review it on the
town’s web site:
www.gilmantonnh.org.
They also
invite you to “talk a little trash” and voice your opinion by taking a brief
survey which can also be found on the town website. If you don’t have
online access, the Power Point presentation and the survey will be available
at the Town Meeting on March 12, 2011. It will also be available at
the recycling facility, the town’s libraries and the town hall. This
anonymous survey will only be available until April 2nd, so don’t delay.
Remember, “Recycling Pays” and the Recycling Committee invites all the
residents of Gilmanton to participate in the town’s recycling future.
Gilmanton
Year-Round Library Is Pleased To Announce That It Has
Received A $50,000
Endowment
Board members were “pleasantly surprised and truly touched by
the gesture,” in a time of economic difficulty, a donation of this size is
an amazingly generous offer.
There is a condition attached to the receipt
of the donation. The funds will be used to establish “The Gilmanton
Year-Round Library Utilities Fund”. Only the interest from the
endowment is to be used to assist with utility costs, including electricity,
heat, telephone and internet services, for the library. Use of this
account will help us to pay our expenses and focus on other services needed
by the community. This donation will allow establishment of an
endowment allowing others to donate to the fund. It will also
strengthen the Gilmanton Year-Round Library’s ability to continue to offer
exceptional services to the residents of Gilmanton.
