The Ellis-Geddes-Leavitt American Legion Post #102 presented a military exercise at the two monuments. They were assisted by Captain Morrill’s Company, a Revolutionary war company. Gilmanton Fire Dept.

On Friday June 4, 2010, at 9:18 PM, the Gilmanton Fire Department with automatic response departments was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1091 Province Road.

At 9:25 PM Car 1, Engine Two and Ambulance Two arrived on the scene and  found fire showing from the roof  of a two and one half story wood frame barn, with a farm house located in close proximity to the fire building. The Chief immediately requested a second alarm assignment bringing in mutual aid from nine neighboring departments.

At 9:31 PM the crew from Engine Two utilizing a 2 ½” hand line was able to knock down the bulk of the fire inside the structure. Utilizing the Tower from Barnstead, the fire that had extended through the roof and exterior wall was able to be located and extinguished.

At 9:39 PM the fire was placed under control, the extinguishment was confirmed and mutual aid companies not on the scene were released. There were no injures to either civilians or firefighters, the estimated damage to the structure is approximately $5,000.00. The cause of the fire was an improperly installed chimney for a forge being utilized in the barn to make horseshoes. The fire started on a window frame and extended up the inside wall and broke through both the roof and exterior wall. The fire was investigated by the Gilmanton Fire Department. The property was turned back over to the owner at 10:44 PM.

The Gilmanton Fire and Police departments were assisted at the scene by the Belmont Fire Department, Barnstead Fire Rescue, and Pittsfield Fire Department. The New Durham Fire Department and Loudon Fire Department covered the Gilmanton Fire Department stations.

On Saturday June 5, 2010, at 7:36 PM, the Gilmanton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motorcycle accident on Province Road (Route 107) near the Barnstead town line.

At 7:36 PM the first company arrived on the scene and reported a motorcycle into the trees with two patients, one that was unresponsive. At 19:44 The Medical Helicopter from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center helicopter was requested. Also mutual aid from Barnstead Fire Rescue was requested to the scene. One patient was transported to a landing zone established at Globe Manufacturing on Loudon Road in Pittsfield and patient care was transferred to the medical team from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The second patient was transported to Concord Hospital by Gilmanton Fire Department ambulance.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Gilmanton Police Department.

The Gilmanton Fire and Police Departments were assisted at the scene by the Barnstead Fire Rescue, Barnstead Police, and Belmont Police Departments.

Songs of Old New Hampshire at Gilmanton Historical Society

Jeff Warner presents Songs of Old New Hampshire at the Gilmanton Historical Society, Tuesday, June 22, 7 p.m. at the Gilmanton Academy.

The Gilmanton Historical Society presents Jeff Warner in a program of Songs of Old New Hampshire on Tuesday evening, June 22, at the Gilmanton Academy Building in Gilmanton Corners. The program begins at 7:30, with refreshments and social hour at 7 p.m.

In his presentation of Songs of Old New Hampshire, Jeff Warner draws heavily on the repertoire of traditional singer Lena Bourne Fish (1873-1945) of Jaffrey and Temple, NH.  He offers the songs and stories that, in the words of Carl Sandburg, tell us “where we came from and what brought us along.” These ballads, love songs and comic pieces reveal the experiences and emotions of daily life in the days before movies, sound recordings, and for some, books. Songs from the lumber camps, the decks of sailing ships, the textile mills and the war between the sexes offer views of pre-industrial New England and a chance to hear living artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Warner is a folklorist and Community Scholar for the NH Council on the Arts and has been named a 2007 State Arts Council Fellow.  The program is co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

The Gilmanton Historical Society’s summer programs are presented on the fourth Tuesday of each month from May through September. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

On July 27th the Society continues its Gilmanton History series, with Gilmanton History 1920  to 1940, readings drawn from newspaper reports of the time and illustrated with photos of the period.

August 24th features a program by Glen Knoblock on the History of the Brewer’s Art in New Hampshire.  The final program of the summer in September, Documentary Photographs of the 1930s, complements the Gilmanton History program with a slide presentation by Martin Fox featuring photographs taken during the Great Depression for the Farm Security Administration.

The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of the Town. They are available at all Society programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in Gilmanton Corners. The Society’s Museum, in the Academy Building, is open by appointment.  Call curators Jeanine Moorhead 267-8870 or George Carpenter 267-8907.

For more information about the summer series, pick up a copy of the flier at the Academy or call President John Dickey at 267-6098.
