The First Baptist Church on Route 107 in Lower Gilmanton is holding the
Annual Meeting of the Church Society on Monday, April 26, 2010, at 7:30 PM

Lower Gilmanton First Baptist Church Society Annual Meeting
The First Baptist Church, the white church that overlooks Lower
Gilmanton from the brow of the hill on Route 107, is holding the Annual
Meeting of the Church Society on Monday, April 26, 2010, at 7:30 PM at the
meeting house.
The Church was founded in 1773 and the current building was built in
1842. Over the years it has served the community with four Sunday
evening services each summer and a community Christmas service, as well as
for weddings and funerals. If you are interested in helping to keep
this landmark an active part of our community for the future, please attend
the annual meeting.
Gilmanton Year-Round Library
The Gilmanton Year-Round Library is pleased to host an exhibit of Larry
Frates paintings. This is the first time his oil paintings have been
exhibited in the Lakes Region. These paintings demonstrate his love of color
and texture which are combined in his pallet knife paintings of his
hometown, Gilmanton, NH. The subjects include scenes from the Corners, the
Iron Works, and Lower Gilmanton.
Mr. Frates has a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from the
Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a Master’s degree in the
Integrated Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He also has
many advanced study experiences. Presently, he is Professor of Fine
Arts/Humanities at Southern NH University and Clinical Art Supervisor at the
Graduate School, Plymouth University
Mr. Frates is the owner of the Riverside Gallery and Art School located
at 24 Elm St. in Gilmanton Iron Works. He has served as an art
educator and director for the Laconia School District, Moultonborough School
District, Gilford School District, Canterbury School, as well as foreign
language teacher at the Gilmanton School. He is currently a member of the
New Hampshire Department of Education Arts Advisory Council. His
exhibits include the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the Briggens Museum in
Norway, the Central Bureau Gallery in London, and the IBEU Center in Brazil.
On Sunday, April 25 at 1 p.m., there will be a MEET THE ARTIST RECEPTION
at the Library. Mr. Frates will give a painting demonstration and briefly
lecture on painting with a pallet knife.
The Gilmanton Year-Round Library is located at 1385 Route 140 in
Gilmanton Iron Works across from the Gilmanton School. The Library is

Delight Mom With A Gift From The Gilmanton Year-Round Library
The Gilmanton Year-Round Library, in cooperation with D.S. Cole Growers,
offers a variety of hanging flower baskets to brighten your Mother’s Day
celebration while supporting the ongoing activities at the Library.
Baskets of petunias or New Guinea impatiens, in four color choices, are
offered for $25 each. Fliers and order forms are available at the Library.

Obituaries
Frank Castro
Gilmanton - Frank Castro, 89, formerly of 34 Currier
Hill Road, died at the Mountain Ridge Center, on Monday, April 12, 2010.
Mr. Castro was born December 14, 1920, in Boston, Mass., the son of
Guiseppe and Maria (Spada) Castro.
He lived in Boston, Mass., for several years before moving to Gilmanton
twenty-seven years ago.
Mr. Castro served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. and had been
employed as a supervisor for the Department of Employment Security for
the City of Boston, Mass., for twenty-five years, retiring December
31, 1982. He was a janitor for the Gilmanton Community Church for twenty
years. He enjoyed his hobby of model building and was an animal lover
and supporter of the S. P. C. A.
Survivors include his brothers and sister in the Boston, Mass., and
Buffalo, N. Y., areas; several nieces and nephews, and his cat, “Lucky”,
whom he rescued from being euthanized.
He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother.
A Graveside Service was held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at the N. H.
State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, N.H.
Rev. Christopher Stevens, Pastor of the Gilmanton Community Church,
officiated.
