Gilmanton 1900-1920 At GHS July 28
Life in Gilmanton between 1900 and 1920 will be the subject of the
Gilmanton Historical Society’s program on Tuesday, July 28th, 7:30 p.m. at
the Old Town Hall on Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works.
Following up on last year’s program about the 1890s, Pat Clarke has
compiled another two decades of Gilmanton history drawn from newspaper
reports of the time. Readers John and Carolyn Dickey, Paula Gilman and
Carolyn Baldwin will describe events and the life style of the period with
excerpts from the local newspapers. The program will be illustrated
with photographs of the Town during the period.
The Gilmanton Historical Society’s summer series continues on
August 25th when Steve Taylor, former NH Commissioner of Agriculture,
tells us how sheep raising in the mid 19th century changed the New Hampshire
landscape, with a talk on The Great New Hampshire Sheep Boom at the
Gilmanton Academy Building.
The final program in the series, on September 22nd at the Old Town Hall,
is Before Peyton Place: In Search of the Real Grace Metalious. Robert Perreault introduces us to the young Grace De Repentigny Metalious,
revealing a side of the author that has remained largely unknown to the
general public.
All programs are free and open to the public; donations are gratefully
accepted. Refreshments and social hour begin at 7 p.m., with the
program beginning promptly at 7:30.

Gilmanton Selectmen Don Guarino, Rachel Hatch and Betty
Ann Abbott poked fun at themselves as “Big Wheels of Gilmanton” in the
Fourth of July Parade. They “rode” Big Wheels, which they bought for the
occasion, then gave them away to 3 lucky children in a drawing at the
fireworks that night at Crystal Lake Park. (Photo by Margaret Hempel).
