#36 is hosting a Harry Potter “Hogwarts Banquet” at the historic Odd
Fellows Hall is Epsom on Saturday, May 5th 6pm. The event will
feature a “Harry Potter” inspired buffet and special activities
including a potions making station etc. Guests are encouraged to
dress up as their favorite character. Proceeds from this event will
be used to continue our local outreach projects. Reservations
are required and the event is for ages 8 and up. Tickets are $10.00.

Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,
This week, my committee
concentrated on public hearings on Senate bills. SB 334, on
temporary licenses for professionals from other states, had an
extended hearing. First, the sponsors complained about the changes
and offered an amendment to restore their original language, which
was a straightforward temporary license for six medical professions,
from several specified states. I presented an amendment to address
the issues from a previous hearing: needing a valid license from
another state to get a temporary one; no working in the state
without a New Hampshire license of some sort; and that each board
should determine that some specified state(s) license was not
equivalent to ours and need not be considered, as well as allowing
an existing reciprocity program to exclude the profession from this
program. The hearing continued with opposition from various licensed
professionals concerned with competition from outsiders: the real
estate agents even used the word “poaching.”
SB 55, on backflow
devices, also had a well attended hearing. This bill did two things:
it moved the boundary between “plumbing” and a water supply
operator’s responsibility to include backflow devices other than the
one at the meter; and it stripped the state fire marshal and his
employees of their arrest authority. This was a reaction to some
over-reach from the mechanical (plumbing and gas fitting)
inspectors, but unfortunately also included the fire investigators –
fully trained law enforcement officers who investigate arson and
other specialized crimes throughout the state – and rendered them
unable to perform their duties. The sponsor brought in an amendment
to limit the repeal to the inspectors, which was supported by
everyone involved. The plumbers came out in force to protest the
intrusion on their responsibility.

The Nam Knights of
America Motorcycle Club’s White Mountain Chapter Vice President
Buddy “Magic” Vetter presents a check to Mrs. Donavan at the
Epsom NH Central School. This is the fifth year the White Mountain
Chapter of the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club has Donated a check for
$1000.00 to the Officer Michael Briggs Memoral Scholarship at the
Epsom NH Central Schools Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Vice President
Vetter commented that, “Our mission Is to honor the memory of
American Veterans and Police Officers who have lost their lives in
the line of duty. It our sincere hope that we can continue to honor
Officer Briggs by supporting this worthy cause for many years to
come.”

Youth Programs
Story Times: Mondays
10am, Tuesdays 1:30pm, and Thursdays, 3:30pm. Children and their
caregivers listen to stories, sings songs and enjoy crafts. April
themes include spring weather, rabbits and chicks.
Toddler Time: Wednesdays
10am. Children and the caregivers enjoy stories, songs, movement
activities and simple crafts.
Lego Club: Thursdays at
3:30pm Plan to join the fun and build with the libraries large
collection of legos.
Family Movie Wednesday,
April 11th 2:30pm: “Aliens Ate My Homework” rated PG Popcorn and
drinks provided. (Early release for ECS)
Epsom Earth Day Clean-Up

Volunteers Will Receive
Sunflower Seeds
In honor of Earth Day the
Epsom Conservation Commission is offering Epsom residents who
volunteer to assist with roadside clean-up a packet of Sunflower or
Pumpkin Seeds. Since Earth Day 1990 the Commission has encouraged
residents to volunteer their time to clean up some area or section
of road or trail in Epsom that is meaningful to them. Won’t you
volunteer to help? It is easy. Do it when you can and the area you
chose. Seed Packets will be at the Town Library the week of Earth
Day, April 22nd. If you would like trash bags they will also
be available at the library. There will be a sign up sheet there to
note who cleaned up, what areas you cleaned up, and how much litter
you collected.
Many of you volunteer
each year. Those of you who do are noticing the emerging trash
as the snow recedes.There is a feeling of community pride seeing
clean roadsides and community areas. Won’t you help? Do it at
a time that works for you or your group. If you would like to
bring unsorted roadside trash to our BCEP Recycling Center in
Pittsfield you must do it from April 18th through the 25th and let
the attendant know it is Roadside Trash for Epsom Earth Day.
