Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:
Governor Lynch has vetoed thirteen bills this year, and 10 vetoes still have to be dealt with: three were overridden in June. It’s a very odd set of bills. SB88, on self defense, fixes a known problem with the “brandishing” statute and eliminates the minimum sentence that sent Ward Bird to jail; it also expands your right to stand your ground outside your home, and that’s the part the Governor objects to, on the advice of some law enforcement officials. SB88 passed the House 283-89 and the Senate 19-5 on the last vote, so an override is likely.

HB380, extending the commission on the status of men, seemed so simple and obvious it passed both House and Senate on voice votes. The state commission on women was merged with existing non-profit organizations, but there is no other group that deals with men’s issues. I expect this veto to be overridden easily, as will SB91, yet another bill banning sprinkler mandates. It’s similar to HB109, already vetoed and overridden, except that it adds a prohibition on enforcing existing sprinkler mandates for manufactured housing. SB3, comprehensive changes to the state retirement system, does not need to be overridden, since its content is already law, from HB2.

The veto least likely to be overridden is that of SB57, authorizing title lenders to operate in the state and charge very high interest rates. Many legislators object to authorizing such high rates; it passed the House only 180-171, which is not close to the 2/3 necessary to override a veto. The Senate passed it 17-6, so it may get to the House and fail there.

Anyone who wants more information than I can fit into a letter should email me for my newsletter.

Epsom Public Library
Adult Summer Reading Program

The summer reading program for adults continues with its theme of Novel Destinations on Wednesday, July 27, with the movie RV, starring Robin Williams.

After promising his wife and two children a family vacation in Hawaii, Bob (Williams) suddenly changes the plans and announces they are going on a road trip to Colorado in a recreational vehicle, all the way from their very comfortable life style in California.  Ostensibly, the reason is to draw the somewhat dysfunctional family together. However, beyond that, unknown to his family, Bob is trying to keep his job.  The road trip, of course, is hilarious, and anything and everything that could go wrong, does.

The movie will begin at 7:00 pm, and popcorn and soft drinks will be served.

On August 3, also at 7:00 pm, the library will present an evening of adventure with international motorcycle traveler Ben Slavin of Hooksett.  In October of 2009 Ben left his home in Hooksett in search of adventure.  Over the next 6 months he rode his motorcycle 23,000 miles through 15 countries, finally reaching the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, Argentina.  We invite you to join us as Ben shares his pictures and stories from his incredible ride through South America.
