The NH Spartans girls AAU teams started their first season in February of 2010. They attended 6 tournaments and a team camp. The Spartans finished the tournament season with a 11-11 record.

The girls recently attended a Maine Gold Rush Team Basketball Camp at Thomas College. The girls played 11 games, attended lectures from college and high school coaches and completed stations. The girls were 6-0 in league games and won the championship against Fryeburg. Not all girls were able to attend the camp, so we had two girls help us for the weekend.

The Spartans team roster consists of the following girls: Brianna Douglas, Brittany Desroche, Suzanne Fraher, Jillian Freeman, Emilee Harlow, Kendra Jarvis, Emma Jewett, Jen O’Brien, Heidi Sykes, Brooke Vien, and Caitlin Yeaton. Coaches are Shelley Maxfield and David Hussey.

In recent weeks there has been some confusion regarding the use of the swimming hole at Webster Park in Epsom. The Board of Selectmen would like to address this in order to clarify the Town’s position regarding the swimming hole.

We are in the process of replacing the signs at the park with new signs that will clearly state “Potentially Hazardous Conditions. Swim At Your Own Risk”. The swimming hole is potentially hazardous for many reasons, some of which are listed here:

• Shifting sandbars -  these can be a very dangerous drowning hazard, as the sand is very loose and people can sink into the sandbars and have trouble getting out.

• Bacteria Levels - although the most recent tests show bacteria levels to be acceptable, this has been a concern in the past and the water continues to be tested regularly.

• Possible debris on the bottom from past flood events.

• Changing water depth from shifting sandbars.

• Sudden changes in water current.

Due to these and other concerns, the Board of Selectmen maintains their decision to post the location as hazardous. Any non-swimming activities at this location (boating or fishing) are for Epsom residents only. Please take all your trash with you from the swimming hole and Webster Park. Webster Park is maintained by volunteers and your assistance in keeping the areas clean would be appreciated.

Joanne Randall
Chairman,
Board of Selectmen
Epsom, NH

Epsom-Chichester Lions Scholarship Awards

The Epsom-Chichester Lions Club awarded two book and supplies scholarships to two graduating seniors from Pembroke Academy this year.

The scholarships are based on scholarship, need, and volunteer efforts by the recipients. Volunteerism is an important component in the judging due to the focus of Lions Clubs International as a service organization.

The awards were to Josie Colbert of Chichester and Brittany Streeter of Epsom. They were presented to them at the awards night at Pembroke Academy in June.

As always, we would love to know if you are interested in Lionism. Call 736-9942 or log on to www.nhlions.org for more information. Click on the Epsom-Chichester Website.

To Allenstown, Epsom And Pittsfield Voters:
Since the legislature is off in July, Carol is letting me pinch-hit for her this week.

On Sunday Carol was recognized as the Legislator of the Year for 2010 by the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance, at their annual Liberty Dinner. This prestigious award is given to the state representative who most consistently voted for personal responsibility and individual freedom, promoting accountable and transparent government, and minimizing government meddling. Carol won for her unfailing opposition to insurance mandates, intrusive regulations, and increases in taxes and fees.

The Liberty Alliance is a non-partisan volunteer group that analyzes all the bills submitted to the New Hampshire Legislature for their effect on personal liberty, economic liberty, and good government. Based on roll call votes of the most important pro- and anti-freedom bills every year, the Liberty rating is a scorecard of every legislator. Carol earned A grades both years, while not missing a single roll call vote. You can find out more about the Liberty Alliance at www.nhliberty.org.

Carol is running for reelection, and I’m running for election as State Representative. We would appreciate the support of Republicans and Independents in the Republican primary on September 14. There are seven candidates for four seats. The good news is that all appear to be excellent choices. My one regret is that we were unable to recruit a candidate from Pittsfield. Five of us are from Epsom and two, Matt Bacon and Jon Richardson, are from Allenstown. One possible point in favor of Carol and myself, is that we are retired and can devote more time to legislature. Look for all the candidates at the Old Home Days this summer, and at debates we are arranging for early September.

Yours,
Dan McGuire
