Town Of Epsom Swimming Lessons

On your mark, get set, and join us for the Town of Epsom sponsored Red Cross Certified Swimming Lessons this summer. The lessons will be held daily from July 19th until July 30th at the Northwood Lake Town Beach.

On Monday, July 19th we will register from 8-9 a.m. At 9 we will review the program and guidelines and then test the students to see what level class they will be in. On the 19th plan to be there until 11 a.m. The following days students will be enrolled in half hour lessons daily based upon their level. We teach beginner and advanced swimming skills. Proficient swimmers learn water safety skills, great pre- lifeguard training.

Please contact swimming instructor Sonia Noyes 736-4520 or [email protected], to give us contact and student information if you are planning to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for children 5 and older to advance their swimming and water safety skills.

There is a $2 Red Cross Registration fee for each student. The lessons are sponsored by the town of Epsom. Thank you, Alison Parodi-Bieling Swimming instructor [email protected]

Epsom Conservation Project Hike

The Town of Epsom and the Conservation Commission is working in the Town Forest on a New Trail with the help of the SCA NH Conservation Corp(SCA). If you would like to understand what the SCA is as well as seeing the trail they are building, we hope you will join us on Saturday, July 3rd.

The SCA provides a motivated and skilled crew (College Age) who make a 10 month commitment to work in the schools teaching conservation and then in the field doing vital conservation projects and resource projects throughout the state. They work for communities and agencies of NH. We are so excited to have them for a 3 week hitch. The trail they are building will start at the mill pond on the Epsom town forest and travel along Blake’s Brook and an old cart path. There are many points of interest including a water sluice that leads to an old mill foundation a beautiful mill pond that is now managed by beaver. This area is naturally beautiful as well as having the reminders of a 18th century farmstead which is now forest. Stonewalls, the mill pond, wells and foundations are some of the evidence of the once vital farm.

For some of the crew this is their 2nd commitment. They have done projects in Alaska and Yosemite. Perhaps you are a post high school student trying to figure out what you want to do. The SCA trains you and pays you a stipend. When not on site working a project, home base for the crew is Bear Brook State Park. Our crew is camping at the work site in the town forest.

They have an impressive camp site bordering the mill pond. They have set up a kitchen camp, a pine needle dining area, a tarped den to store equipment and get out of the weather and individual tents. They are trained in camping and best practices for trail building. The trail will be for passive use such as hiking and snowshoeing.

So come meet this conservation minded crew. Meet Joshua from North Carolina, Sarah and Mathew from Illinois, ‘Z’ from South Florida, Kelsey from Oregon, and Jonathan from Washington State. Perhaps you know someone who is interested in applying to this program(SCA) or are interested in learning about the beautiful trail system we have on the town forest. Have you hiked Neville Peak? It is a must.

We hope you will join us on July 3rd.  We will meet on Tarlton Road at the parking area for the town forest at 10am. We will hike the new trail and view some sites. Bring your lunch and picnic at the SCA campsite. For directions and to RSVP please contact the Epsom Conservation Commission at [email protected] or 736-9744/eves.

Epsom Library To Offer Summer Program For Adults

The Epsom Library is offering a six-week summer program for adults, beginning July 12. As one patron said, “Why should the kids have all the fun???” And fun it will be with weekly drawings for prizes, guest speakers, door prizes, and a grand finale to wrap things up.

Patrons who wish to participate do not need to sign up ahead of time, but beginning on July 12, packets will be available with detailed information.

“Water Your Mind” is the theme for the first two weeks and will feature guest speaker Margaret Evans Porter on July 14. For the “Water Your Garden” portion, a Master Gardener will address “Putting Your Garden to Bed” on July 28. The final two weeks of the program, “Water Your Soul”, will feature a joint presentation on August 11 by Tamara Krenn, massage therapist, and Cyndi Jarvis, an esthetician who also does reflexology.

The library will be closed on July 5. Regular library hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 to 5 and Saturday, 9 to 1.

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, And Pittsfield:
Five bills I sponsored have passed the House and the Senate and are becoming law this year. The simplest, HB1219, repealed the wartime alien registration requirement. That was a segment of the NH statutes that has been unenforceable since the 1930’s, and undesirable since it was created during WWI. HB1240, on the uses of state-owned vehicles, clarifies fleet management requirements and insists that any personal use must be reported and justified. Next session, if re-elected, I plan to continue with another bill to improve the efficiency of the state fleet.

HB1486 prohibits towns or the state fire code or building code from requiring sprinklers in residences. New Hampshire has excellent fire statistics, so sprinklers are not as necessary here, and the combination of cold winters and well water makes them much more expensive than in many other places. HB1187, allowing residential elevators in rental units, makes it easier and much less expensive to provide rentals for people who can’t use stairs. HB1688 allows commercial use of European-style pellet boilers, which have been extensively developed and are more efficient and less polluting than many available boilers.

Three other bills were killed, but my intent was satisfied: the content of HB1618, prohibiting state taxation of federally tax-exempt property exchanges, was included in SB483. HB1178, creating a commission to hear issues relating to children and families, was killed by the Committee on Children & Family Law – which then went out and held a series of listening sessions! The on-line, searchable database of state spending required by my HB1670 has actually been started at http://www.nh.gov/transparency.

Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.
