Letter
Epsom Meetinghouse Plans

I knew I should have listened to my university professor when he suggested that when one writes (to another) don’t write it so that you (meaning me) are the only one who will be able to understand your (me again) ideas. In my “Be prepared” letter to the Editor, I was merely suggesting that the author of Warrant Article #1 was not prepared to justify his request for the approval of $350,000. A written estimate and/or non-binding bid(s) would have made all the difference in the world. The B.S.A.’s motto is “Be Prepared.”

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, And Pittsfield:
In session this week: HB1522, setting the parameters for a local spending cap, was killed, 202-148, with both Representatives Brown and Porter voting to kill it; Representative Yeaton was unable to attend the session. HB1679, establishing a soft drinks tax, gave some representatives the opportunity of lecturing us for 40 minutes on the evils of sugar. The bill failed, 288-65, with only Representative Brown from this district supporting the tax.

HB1447, on the use of firearms in the compact part of a town, required notification rather than permission. An amendment deleting the statute entirely failed 115-229. HB1224, which requires school system employees and volunteers to pay for criminal background checks, had an amendment to include even arrests. Since one is innocent until proven guilty, blocking someone from even volunteering in a school after only arrests is wrong to me and many others. The amendment failed, 129-205, with both Representatives Brown and Porter voting for it. HB1224 was then tabled.

Finally getting to new bills, we passed or killed 125 bills on the consent calendar, including HB1240, my bill on state owned vehicles. Then we dealt with HB1677, extending the “collar” on changes in school aid for two years. I hoped to kill it, since Epsom would get significantly more school aid, and Allenstown and Pittsfield were almost unaffected. However, the debate was convincing: if HB1677 passed, state school aid would be held level; if it failed, the state would have to generate an additional $140M in taxes each year! Despite my vote, the bill was killed, 203-131, with Representatives Brown and Porter voting to kill it.

Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.

Feeling Dumbed Up

I just read a letter from a member of the EBOS in the SVS Mar 3rd pertaining to some discussion that the EBOS removed the tax impact from the ballot to get a budget passed. I have not heard this being discussed at all and I do not feel that the EBOS did that. I do believe that it would be easy to come up with the feeling that this law does just that.  I do feel that whomever claims this so called law is in effect has their head stuck very deep in something and I wish our BOS had the courage to defy this law that says if something is omitted from the wording of a law, it is automatically included. Maybe some clever person using the humorous talent of Abbott & Costello (Who’s on first) could explain it to us, the people who have to pay for everything that passes on the town warrant.

I believe that if we still have “A GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE, we do not have to accept that all laws are “right” and if we don’t we had better put a new slogan on our license plates.

With all the talk about “the uninformed voter” it sure looks like this law is designed to keep voters uninformed.

If ever an issue needed to see the inside of a courtroom, this one is it.
