Sobriety Checkpoint

As a result of the increasing incidents of drinking and driving, the Allenstown Police Department in cooperation with the Pembroke Police Department, Epsom Police Department, Chichester Police Department, Concord Police Department, Pittsfield Police Department, and the Merrimack County Sheriffs Office applied for, and was granted, a Superior Court Petition to conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint.  The “Sobriety Checkpoint” is the most effective method of detecting and apprehending the impaired operator.

The program, approved by the NH Highway Safety Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provides federal highway safety funds to support these checkpoints, which will be conducted in Epsom.

A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents. Therefore, in an effort to maintain safe roads in Epsom, the Merrimack County DUI Task Force will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint in the Epsom area on the week of July 6, 2009.

The purpose of the Sobriety Checkpoint is to detect and apprehend the impaired driver.  Epsom Police Chief Wayne Preve and the Merrimack County DUI Task Force have taken an aggressive stance to prevent persons from driving when intoxicated. New Hampshire has some of the most aggressive laws in the country to fight the intoxicated driver and the law enforcement community will use those tools to their full extent.

Respectfully,
Chief Wayne B. Preve

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield:
The new state budget has a long list of new and increased taxes and fees that will affect everyone in the state. All court filing fees are going up 20%. Boat registration fees doubled, car registration fees are up $30, truck registration fees up at least $45. Fees for copies of motor vehicle records are up by 50%; car inspection fees are up by $0.75. Vanity plates will cost $40 initially and $40 renewal fees. All sorts of license fees are increasing, from food licenses to health care facility licenses and non-resident pistol licenses. DES sewage system approvals increased from $140 to $290/plan, subdivision plans doubled in cost, condominium development fees more than doubled.

The room and meals tax went up to 9%, and applies to campsites as well as rooms, meals, and rental cars. If your business is organized as an LLC rather than a corporation, as many small businesses are, distributions are now taxed as dividends. And heating oil gets an additional quarter of a cent per gallon “import tax."

The cigarette tax goes up 45 cents a pack, and cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, etc., are taxed at almost 50% of the wholesale price. There’s no beer tax hike, but discounts on wine for retailers have been slashed. Any gambling win big enough to require a Federal Form W2-G (about $600) now suffers a 10% tax that applies to gross winnings before deducting losses.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program premium increased by $7-9/month.

Retired state employees under age 65 will pay $65/month for health insurance for themselves or spouses; any new state or town employees (except police & fire) will contribute 7% of pay to the Retirement Fund, rather than 5%, for the same pension. And every- one needs a new $15 license to fish in salt water.

Next week, what the new budget means to your property taxes!

Epsom Fire Department Explorer Post 546

Recently the members of the Epsom Fire Department decided to re-start the Explorer Post, which had been dormant for many years. With the assistance from the Daniel Webster Council we advertised and held a successful open house.

The Explorer Program is designed to teach today’s youths the ins and outs of the fire service. They will be exposed to a career in the fire service, which is both rewarding and exciting. The Explorers will have an opportunity to participate in training and activities such as emergency calls, CPR and first aid, structure fires, search and rescue operations, forest fires, car fires, motor vehicle accidents, fire prevention and much more.

Over the last 5 weeks, the Explorers have been involved in the regular fire department trainings. They have assisted with pumping from a hydrant, search and rescue operations, basic SCBA, ambulance operations and equipment and 2 medical classes.

The minimum requirements for becoming an Explorer are as follows:
• Must be between the ages of 14 – 21 and successfully passed the 8th grade.
• Currently maintaining a 70% academic average.
• Willing to participate in the Fire Fighting and EMS fields.
• Must have permission from a parent or legal guardian.

To obtain more information and/or an application for membership, please contact me at the fire station.

Epsom and Chichester Girl Scout Troops Hold Powder Puff Derby

On June 7th, the Epsom and Chichester Girl Scout troops held their first ever Girl Scout Powder Puff derby race at the Epsom fire station. This event was a big hit and lots of fun for everyone! There were 32 racers; which included racers from the Daisy, Brownie, and Junior troops, as well as a few sibling and adult racers. Each Girl Scout was responsible for the design, theme, creation and painting of her race car. Because there was such a positive response to this event, we hope it is the beginning of yet another wonderful event for the Girl Scouts and plan to hold it each year. This is just one of many activities our Girl Scouts enjoy throughout the year. For more information on Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, call 627-4158 or visit www.girlscoutsgwm.org

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make this event a success. Also, a big thank you to the Epsom Fire Department for the use of the station hall and to Epsom Boy Scout Pack 80 for use of the Pinewood Derby Track and computer software.
