Epsom Central School Fundraising Calendars

The eighth graders at Epsom Central School will be selling calendars for an upcoming class trip. This is an exciting opportunity for these very deserving children to go on a great trip that they may not have been able to afford otherwise. These children have worked very hard, so please consider helping make this trip a reality for these wonderful children who will have a once in a lifetime trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2009. This is a one month calendar and every day of the month wins a prize. So there will be over 30 prizes in all. The calendar will cost $5.00 and you will be able to be entered into drawings for a chance to win on every day of the month. Treat yourself to a chance to win some wonderful prizes or give as gifts for the upcoming holiday season. For any business owner these calendars would make a great gift for employees. You would be giving them 30 opportunities to win a great prize for just $5.00 each. I would like to thank all of the local businesses that have donated these great prizes! If you know an eighth grader who goes to Epsom Central School please let them know if you would like a calendar. For more information or to find out where to purchase these calendars please contact Vicki at 736-7177. Thank-you for your support!

Fort Mountain Trail Winders

As another season is about to begin the club is going full swing getting the trails ready for snow. Some of the tasks this year include brush cutting, bridge building, and taking care of any washouts that may have occurred during our rainy summer. We have a small but dedicated group of volunteers that find a way to get it done each year, it would be very difficult to perform these tasks without their support and the support of the local landowners. Thank you! We look forward to seeing you on the trails and maybe a meeting or two, as  always the club meets the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m., email [email protected] or 396-0136 for more info. Safe riding and happy trails from FMTW.

Letter

It amazes me that in this age of advanced identification technology, in both commerce and in the military, that not one person, not one company, can produce a simple, fool-proof ID recognition program for voter registration and voting that we can adopt for each state. Our country has become like one of those dictator-led countries, where people risk their lives to show up to vote and it doesn’t matter anyway, since it turns out to be fixed.

But what really bothers me, and it should bother everyone else, Democrat or Republican, is that Barack Obama has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to ACORN to help increase voter registration. This is not some rumor, it is a fact. It is no coincidence that this voter registration and voter fraud by ACORN is in states like Ohio, a very important state in the final count of electoral votes. In fact, ACORN is being investigated in twelve different states for fraud. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Look out, Senator. We’re smarter than you give us credit for and we’re on to you.

Letter

Dear Epsom, Allenstown, and Pittsfield Citizens,
I am writing this letter in support of Carol and Dan McGuire and John Klose of Epsom and Ben Fontaine of Allenstown. I am pleased to see that they have announced their candidacy for the Republican Party to serve as New Hampshire State Representatives and have been actively campaigning for your support.

Carol is a present member of the Epsom Budget Committee, and Dan serves on the Planning Board, while John is a former Epsom Selectman and State Representative. Ben has served as an Allenstown Selectman as well as in other positions within the town of Allenstown.

I came to know Carol, Dan, John, and Ben from their involvement in various state issues during the time that I served this district in the State Legislature myself. These individuals are civic-minded, professional people, who, like most of us, are sincerely concerned with the fiscal and social direction of our state government. For instance, Carol is currently on the Board of Directors for the Coalition of New Hampshire Taxpayers, and Dan is currently serving as the secretary for the Granite State Taxpayers. I appreciate the fact that they would like to bring that type of pro-taxpayer involvement into our state government as well.

Please join me on Tuesday, November 4th in voting for Carol and Dan McGuire, Ben Fontaine, and John Klose to represent us in Concord in order to ensure sound economic and social policy where it matters most, here in New Hampshire.

Respectfully Submitted,
Tom Langlais, Epsom

Letter

To the voters of Merrimack County
There is one person in this upcoming election that deserves our vote as County Attorney in Merrimack County and that person is Tom Reid. Tom is an experienced county prosecutor who clearly understands the trials and tribulations of the office. As an Assistant County Attorney in Rockingham County, Tom has demonstrated that he and he alone has the experience to make the tough decisions that go with being a County prosecutor. He has also prosecuted the tough cases and knows what it takes to bring a case to a successful close.

Making tough decisions and prosecuting cases is an intricate part of the job but that is not all. Insuring that we get cost effective service from the office is very important. Tom, like all of us, has a family budget to balance and will use that same common sense approach to insure that the office of County Attorney will operate at peak efficiency. He will also insure that the programs already in existence and those that will come in the future are giving the taxpayers the biggest bang for their buck. I think all of us agree that providing the best professional services whether they be during an investigation, a prosecution or in any type of preventative program is of the utmost importance. Tom will insure that this happens and has been an intricate part of this happening in Rockingham County.

It is for these reasons that I’ll be voting for Tom Reid for Merrimack County Attorney. Having been a law enforcement officer in this state for close to thirty years I know that experience counts. We need Tom Reid and Tom is the only candidate that has the necessary experience to insure that we in Merrimack County will have a professional county prosecutors office providing the services we require.

Halloween Can Kill Your Diet

Local fat loss expert Nancy Carlson PFT, YFS, has information that every dieter needs to know: Halloween is when the holiday weight gain really starts. While the month of December is typically blamed for holiday weight gain, Carlson warns those wanting to lose weight that thanks to Halloween the pounds actually start to get packed on in late October. “The amount of eats and treats that people consume is alarming,” Carlson was quoted as saying. “One of the main problems is the smaller ‘snack sizes’ that the candy manufacturers have made available. Eating several ‘mini’ chocolate bars is something people see as ‘ok’ because of their smaller size. In other words, it becomes a lot easier to convince yourself to indulge in these gut-swelling goodies and then you end up eating even more than before!”

Carlson recommends the following three figure-saving tips she has used with great success with her own clients for keeping the pounds off while still allowing for the occasional Halloween treat during pumpkin season:

1) Workout with Pumpkins: It doesn’t take a bunch of fancy equipment – you can engage in some amazingly fun and effective seasonal fat loss workouts involving only your body weight and you guessed it… a pumpkin! These high-intensity, metabolism-boosting workouts will have you burning tons of calories during the workouts AND even more calories while you’re resting... or having those naughty Halloween treats!

2) Make Healthier Halloween Recipes: You can still enjoy the holidays without loading up on the extra calories. Nancy’s most popular Halloween recipe is her Pumpkin Pecan Shake loaded with muscle-building, fat-starving protein plus the optimal dose of healthy fats, fruit, and fiber for a “complete better body meal.” It is imperative to be able to think outside the box by substituting healthier ingredients where possible without overly sacrificing the taste you crave for a more figure-friendly Halloween.

3) Use Common Sense:
- Only buy enough candy so that you expect to run out before the evening is over. It’s crucial to weight loss success to not have “trigger” foods lying around – the temptation is often too great.

- Allow yourself just one piece of candy in the morning and then one at night. Skip any desserts that you would normally eat after dinner. Also, be sure to increase your exercise activity by thirty minutes on every day that you eat your two pieces of candy. This will counteract the increase in calories that you are consuming.

- Furthermore, if people indulge a bit too much it’s important to forgive themselves and move on. Dwelling on the past will not help their success.

Carlson believes that we must break out of the frustrating emotional eating patterns that sabotage our fat loss efforts during the holidays. She states: “Our brains are wired to crave the sugar-laden treats that typify the Halloween season. So, our approach has been to take the exact opposite approach with our clients. Instead of using Halloween as a reason to justify eating a bunch of junk food we spin the seasonal event to spice up our boot camp workouts by using pumpkin exercises. Halloween thus becomes a fat loss tool for us and our clients- this approach is key to adopting a healthy lifestyle for long-term success.”

Carlson’s local “Get Fit NH” bootcamp (www.GetFitNHbootcamp.com) will be holding their annual “Freaky Fat Loss Workout” on Friday, October 31st  at her studio in Epsom. The event features a fat loss workout, using pumpkins, that Carlson claims will “scare the fat off of your body.” If you want to be part of this fun event, and get a great workout, email Nancy for more information at [email protected]

Nancy Carlson is the co-owner of Cr8 Health & Fitness, and a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Youth Fitness Specialist. As a busy mom of six, she understands what it takes to integrate a healthy lifestyle into a hectic schedule. Nancy is also a fitness boot camp instructor and runs the highly popular Get Fit NH Bootcamps (www.GetFitNHbootcamp.com) with her husband and co-trainer Dean in Epsom, NH.

Stephen Bartlett

Epsom - Stephen "Bam-Bam" Bartlett, 46, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Bam is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sheila (Champney) Bartlett; a daughter, Amber Bartlett; a granddaughter, Indigo James; a son, Donald Champney; brothers, Tom Fortier and Rob Bartlett; mother, Carol Velsor; sisters, Lynn Ann Perry and Brenda Bartlett; many nieces and nephews; and his brothers of the road.

Bam was predeceased by his fathers, Albert Fortier and Bob Bartlett.

Bam was born in Exeter more than likely with a wrench in his right hand and a Harley manual in the other.

Bam ran and owned Steve's Small Engine Repair in Pittsfield. In his shop he built and designed many Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Bam was a member of the Red Emeralds MC for more than 20 years and the president for many of those years.

Throughout the years, Bam has turned his love of the open road and the knowledge of motors into a lifestyle that suited him and all who knew him. Bam was a man of many facets: avid hunting and fishing enthusiast; steel erector and metal fabricator; snowmobile and motorcycle enthusiast; engine mechanic.

Everyone who has had the pleasure of coming into his circle of being will remember who he was.

Children will remember him as the giant who would bring you into the shop and let you get your hands dirty. Adults will remember the man who didn't take any B.S., but was quick to offer his hand in assistance.

Everyone will remember "that one time" because there were so many.

Calling hours were held Saturday, October 25, 2008,  at Boar's Tavern, Loudon.
A memorial ride to Mcleary Cemetery, Epsom,  followed.

Memorial donations may be made to the Stephen "Bam-Bam" Bartlett Memorial Fund, c/o TD Banknorth.
