John
L. Saturley recently celebrated his 95th birthday at his home on
Granny Howe Road. Friends and four generations of his family
gathered for corn and steamers, ice cream and cake. All his children
were present for a family picture.
Saturday, August 4,
has been set as a Work Day at Carpenter Park. Volunteers are needed
to dispose of the slash debris left over from the clear cutting of
the new expansion zone. Food and drink will be available at the park
for volunteer workers. Please wear appropriate work clothes and
gloves. Children under 13 will need to be supervised at all times by
their parents as there will probably be heavy machinery and cutting
tools on site. Childcare may be available. If you are not a heavy
lifter, perhaps you could prepare food or provide childcare.
Register to help by contacting Frank Harrison at
www.webharrison.net/carpenter-park or call 798-3105.
Help! The Old Home Day Committee is badly in need of volunteers to

out for a few hours on August 18.
Take a picture of
your favorite tree, write down why you chose it, and enter the
Chichester Heritage Commission’s Photo Contest for 2012. Entries may
be given to Lucille Noel, Michelle Plunkett, or any other member of
the Heritage Commission before August 17. The results will be judged
on Old Home Day, August 18, at Carpenter Park.
Would
you like to donate something for the Two Pound Table at Old Home
Day? The Old Home Day Committee is looking for things that weigh two
pounds which can be wrapped up and put into a raffle on Old Home
Day, August 18. The purpose of the raffle is to create fun and
excitement at Old Home Day 2012 and raise a few dollars toward the
expenses of Old Home Day 2013. Donations of items weighing two
pounds may be dropped off at Frekey’s Dairy Freeze during open
hours.
Out Of Your Attic Thrift Shop News Submitted By Carol Hendee
Finally, an article on the internet that tells you what you can and
should buy from thrift shops, instead of focusing on the “do nots.”
We know not to take cribs and mattresses, we also know what we have
on the “good list.”
Baby items are high on the buy list.
They are used such a short time and are in good condition. We have a
stroller, johnny-jump-up, potty chairs, clothing, books, quilts and
baby toys.
Toys are also on the “buy” list. Kids play with
them for a short time and are then looking for something new.
We have Beanie babies for 50¢ and $1.00; My Little Pony for 25¢;
blocks, dolls, etc. Don’t pay $10.00 for something they want for a
few days when you can do just as well for $1.00 or less.
Books, clothes, jewelry, mugs, and glassware are all on the buy list
and we have them at amazingly low prices. There was a recycled
clothing fashion show at Market Days; used clothing is all in!
We are at 345 Suncook Valley Highway, Chichester. We are open
Mon. 8-12, Tues. and Thurs. 8-4, Wed. 11-4 and Sat. 10-4. You
can call us at 247-7191.
State Of New Hampshire Voter ID Law - Laws Of 2012, Chapter 284
Explanatory Document
During
the 2012 legislative session the legislature passed Senate Bill 289,
also known as the “Voter ID” Law. The new law will phase-in a photo
identification requirement over a period of time.
This
explanatory document is required under the “Voter ID” law as part of
the process of educating the public about the law’s requirements and
application and outlines the law’s requirements for 2012.
What
type of photo ID will I need in order to vote?
For any election
before September 1, 2013, you will be asked to provide one of the
following: Driver’s license issued by any state (even if expired);
ID card issued by NH DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles); U.S. Armed
Services ID card; U.S. Passport (even if expired); Valid photo ID
card issued by either the federal government or a state, county or
municipal government; Valid student ID card; Other photo ID deemed
legitimate by the supervisors of the checklist, the moderator, or
the clerk; or Verification of identity by a supervisor of the
checklist, the moderator or the clerk.
What if I do not have an
approved photo ID?
Before November 1, 2012, any voter who does
not present an approved photo ID will be informed of the new law and
permitted to vote.
Between November 1, 2012 and September 1,
2013, any voter who does not present an approved photo ID will be
permitted to vote after executing a “challenged voter affidavit.”
A voter who does not have an approved photo ID may obtain a free
photo ID for voting purposes only by presenting a voucher from their
town/city clerk or the Secretary of State to any NH DMV office that
issues identification.
Is there any post-election action required
by me after I vote without an approved photo ID?
After November
1, 2012, if you filled out a “challenged voter affidavit” in order
to vote on Election Day, you will receive a verification letter from
the Secretary of State, requesting confirmation that you voted in
the election. If you do not respond in writing to the Secretary of
State within 30 days of the date it was mailed, the Attorney General
will conduct an investigation to determine whether fraudulent voting
occurred.
Where can I get more information?
Your city or town
clerk or the Secretary of State.
Chichester Library News
The
last event of the summer reading program is on Thursday night,
August 16th at 6:30 pm. You will need to bring a calculator for one
of the tricks. If you would like to share a magic trick we
would love to have you help. You can call the library at 798-5613 or
Jimmy Pappas at 798-3410. The raffles will be drawn that night, so
come in and get your ticket for reading three this week.
Sharron
Pinckney would love to teach any child or teen to knit on Wednesday,
August 8th at 7:00 pm. You may bring a pattern, needles and
yarn if you know what you want to knit, or just come with some yarn
and needles to learn. Size 8 needle is recommended.
The
next Garden Club will be on August 8th as well.
We need boxes to
empty the rest of the shelves in the basement; not too big, as books
are heavy.
Chichester Heritage Commission Completes Moose Plate Grant
Grange Hall windows “packed up and ready” to be removed to
Olde
Window Restorers, Weare, NH.
The
Chichester Heritage Commission was awarded a Conservation License
Plate Grant in September of 2011. This Grant was for the restoration
of 13 windows in the Grange Hall in the amount of $9,850. The work
has now been completed.
The building, built in 1889, by the
Chichester Building Association, is a two story Greek Revival wood
frame structure with a gable roof. A gabled door hood in the stick
trim/Eastlake style, shelters the double door entrance. The windows
are original to the building with the exception of the small
basement windows which were added in 1988. The original windows
measure 40 inches X 70 inches with each pane measuring 12 inches X
18 inches. The stage area windows are a bit smaller, at 68 inches in
height with panes measuring 12 inches X 16 inches.
The project
consisted of repairing and weather stripping the sash to fully
restore and energy enhance the building’s windows. Basic tuning of
the mechanical operation, and replacing the cracked panes of glass
as well as replacing failed glazing putty, will add many more years
to the life-span of these important architectural features. All
windows were restored using the Secretary of the Interior’s
Standards for Rehabilitation and EPA Lead Safe Practices. Dave
Bowers, Olde Window Restorers, of Weare, NH was selected to do the
restoration and weatherization of the thirteen windows covered by
the Moose Plate Grant. The Heritage Commission monitored the removal
and reinstallation of the windows. The Town of Chichester was the
fiscal agent for the project.
The Heritage Commission is still
raising funds for the restoration of the remaining windows. As of
present, donations have been received for the restoration of four
additional windows. This will complete the window restoration on the
main floor of the Grange. This effort, “One Pane At A Time”, offers
an opportunity for our community to help with the window restoration
project for this historic building.
For more information about
the Grange Hall/Town Hall Window Restoration Project call 798-5709
or contact any Chichester Heritage Commission member for details.
