Chichester Heritage Commission
The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources is pleased to
announce that the State Historical Resources Council has added six
individual properties to the New Hampshire State Register of
Historic Places.
One of the six properties to be listed is Chichester’s Town House,
which now serves as the town library. The timber-framed building was
built on the site of the town’s 18th century meeting house. The Town
House, completed in 1847, has been the seat of town government as
well as the library and central meeting place for the town for more
than 150 years.
The State Register has helped to promote the significance of many
historic properties across New Hampshire. Benefits of being listed
on the State Register included:
• Special consideration and relief from some building codes and
regulations;
• Designation of a property as historical, which is a
pre-qualification for many grant programs, including Conservation
License Plate Grants and LCHIP Grants, and
• Acknowledgement of a property’s historical significance in the
community.
Anyone wishing to nominate a property to the NH State Register of
Historic Places must research the history of the nominated property
and document it fully on individual inventory forms from the NH
Division of Historical Resources.
The Chichester Heritage Commission will present a framed
certificate, stating this listing to the State Register of Historic
Places, to the library trustees at the Commission’s December meeting
on the 20th. The public is invited to attend this presentation at 7
pm at the Chichester Town Library, 161 Main Street. For information
contact Lucille at 798-5709.
