Letter
Time for a Change
Several letters and news stories have appeared in the local papers about
issues concerning the Chichester Selectmen and their role in problems now
affecting the fire department.
When the previous fire chief resigned, a public meeting was held at the
Town Hall regarding the appointment of a new chief. At least four fire
department members, including now-chief Gilbert Vien expressed interest in
the position. At that meeting and on subsequent occasions the Selectmen were
informed that Mr. Vien did not meet the requirements previously established
by the Town for the position of fire chief. The Selectmen did not heed this
information and appointed Gil Vien as fire chief, never even interviewing at
least 2 of the other interested members. Because the Selectmen disregarded
existing fire dept. regulations in their actions, four previous department
chiefs immediately submitted their retirement letters as active members of
the Chichester FD. I, as a forest fire warden with over 50 years of service,
did the same. Thus, 2 of the 3 present members of the Board of Selectmen are
the cause of the present turmoil in the fire dept. Since his appointment,
the present chief has fired at least two members for what he called
disciplinary measures, one of which is now in the headlines.
I have been an active member of the Chichester FD for over 70 years,
serving as chief for 17 years and forest fire warden for 35 years. In all
that time I do not recollect any volunteer fireman being fired for a
disciplinary infraction.
I have supported Steven MacCleery for over seven different elections,
but now I will support Mike Paveglio for Selectman. Mike is well qualified
and will listen to voter issues.
