Suncook Valley Area Lions Club (serving Pittsfield and Barnstead) is
collecting gently used items for the Town Wide Yard Sale.
Spots are available (for $10) for other groups or individuals to set
up with the Lions Club at Northeast Earth Mechanics on Barnstead Rd.

CONTAINER - discarded needles do not belong in the mixed paper, the
plastic OR any of the recycle bins. This is very dangerous
for the staff to discover used needles “hidden” in the recyclables.

and Wellness Event!
On May
18th at 6pm join local resident Lee Briggs for a Health and Wellness
event at the library! Lee will be discussing healthy, natural
lifestyle choices and botanical products. Light refreshments will be
served.
Barnstead Hiking Club!
On May
19th at 11:30 am join us at the library for the inaugural meeting of
our Hiking Club! We are hoping to get local individuals together who
are interested in hiking to plan outings and discuss local trails
and mountains. The library also has some local trail maps available
for purchase at $3.

They
Just Can’t Stand To Lose
By the
time this is printed, the vote on the school voucher bill will have
been taken. Regardless of the outcome, the method used by the
Republican backers of this legislation mimics the dirty tactics used
by their Republican comrades in Washington.
The NH
Republican leadership just could not stand to lose on one of their
bills that would benefit the rich, and penalize all of the property
owners in most of our cities, towns and villages. This school
voucher bill was defeated twice, and some of their fellow
Republicans voted correctly by saying no to this downshifting of
costs for education to real estate taxpayers in the state.
In an
eleventh hour move, after the legislators had retired for the day,
Senator Jeb Bradley, supported by our one-time governor Chris
Sununu, tagged HB 193 to an unrelated piece of legislation, thereby
insuring another vote on a bill that had failed under a
reconsideration move. “Dirty Republican Politics at its
worse.”
Notwithstanding the above, they are fully aware that shifting
government dollars to religious institutions is a flagrant violation
of our Constitution. Like good politicians, they are
attempting to circumvent this violation of separation of church and
state by moving the funds through a sham third party vehicle.
Don’t they realize that the citizens can see right through this
sham?
It is
time for a change, and the November elections are fast
approaching.

Driveway Culverts
There
is a widespread problem in Barnstead with the connections between
the residential driveways and town roads. Last winter, there
were a number of areas where washouts and large masses of ice
buildup occurred where town roads and driveways met. The cause
of the problem is usually the absence of, or failure of, the
driveway culvert.
Driveway culverts and the headwalls on each end of the culvert are
the complete responsibility of the property owner. If the culvert is
clogged or not functioning properly, it is the responsibility of the
property owner to clear the obstructions. If the culvert is
collapsed or structurally compromised, it is the responsibility of
the property owner to repair or replace the culvert. If the
headwalls have collapsed or deteriorated, they too are the
responsibility of the property owner for repair and maintenance.
Your
cooperation in maintaining the driveway culverts is appreciated as
it is necessary to prevent expensive damage being done to the town
roads.

Rae Newman (Shattuck)
June 2,
1958 – May 3, 2018
Sonja
R. Newman, 59, of Barnstead, passed away Thursday, May 3 at Concord
Hospital.
She
leaves her husband, Paul E. Newman, two daughters, Kandy Shattuck
and Kelly Hanson, two sons Tom Fletcher and Adam Fletcher, and four
grandchildren, Dylan Shattuck, Robert Wilkinson, Katelyn Lank and
Hunter Lank. Her mother, Eileen Shattuck, two sisters, Sheila Goss
and Sherry Shattuck, and three brothers, Steve Shattuck, Scott
Shattuck, and Sam Shattuck. She is predeceased by her father,
Francis Shattuck and her sister Sandy Shattuck. She also leaves
several nieces and nephews.
Sonja
was born and raised in Concord. She worked at Globe Manufacturing in
Pittsfield as a stitcher for 20 years.
A
service will be held Saturday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate
Heart of Mary church, 180 Loudon Road in Concord. There will be a
Celebration of Life immediately following at the Concord Moose
Lodge, 170 N. State Street in Concord.
In lieu
of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Payson Center
for Cancer Care at 250 Pleasant Street in Concord.
