The Suncook Valley Sun News Archive is Maintained by Modern Concepts. We are NOT affliated in any way with the Suncook Valley Sun Newspaper.

The Suncook Valley Area Lions Club (serving Pittsfield and Barnstead) is collecting gently used items for the Town Wide Yard Sale.  Spots are available (for $10) for other groups or individuals to set up with the Lions Club at Northeast Earth Mechanics on Barnstead Rd.  If you have any items you’d like to donate or for more information, please contact Laurie Vien at 435-5052.

PLEASE BRING ALL DISCARDED NEEDLES TO THE BCEP OFFICE IN A HARD PLASTIC CONTAINER - discarded needles do not belong in the mixed paper, the plastic OR any of the recycle bins.   This is very dangerous for the staff to discover used needles “hidden” in the recyclables.  ALSO, soiled personal hygiene products should be disposed of in the trash.  Thank you for your cooperation. Questions gladly answered by any staff member or call 435-6237.

Congratulations to Kayla Sliger from Center Barnstead, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education in elementary education from Coastal Carolina University.

May Is National Stroke Awareness Month

Central New Hampshire VNA & Hospice wants to help you lead as full, active, happy and healthy a life as possible.  In order to do that, here’s some information about stroke prevention:

• Stroke is a leading cause of death and permanent disability

• 4 out of 5 stroke victims have no apparent warning signs

• Up to 80% of strokes are preventable

• Lack of sleep and/or sleep apnea can contribute to a stroke

• Weight and activity are important factors in stroke prevention

• Other causes include smoking, diabetes and alcohol abuse

• High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke

That’s right – the leading cause of stroke is entirely preventable.  Central VNA offers free blood pressure clinics all around the lake.  Currently you can find regular free clinics in Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Gilmanton and Ossipee, with more to come.  Check their website regularly for clinics near you.  https://www.centralvna.org/html/events.

A great on-line resource is the American Heart Association.  You can find all manner of information at www.heart.org.

Learn what you can, stay on top of your blood pressure, talk to your doctor or Central VNA so you, too, can live a long and healthy life.

Letter To The Editor

They Just Can’t Stand To Lose

By the time this is printed, the vote on the school voucher bill will have been taken.  Regardless of the outcome, the method used by the Republican backers of this legislation mimics the dirty tactics used by their Republican comrades in Washington.

The NH Republican leadership just could not stand to lose on one of their bills that would benefit the rich, and penalize all of the property owners in most of our cities, towns and villages.  This school voucher bill was defeated twice, and some of their fellow Republicans voted correctly by saying no to this downshifting of costs for education to real estate taxpayers in the state.

In an eleventh hour move, after the legislators had retired for the day, Senator Jeb Bradley, supported by our one-time governor Chris Sununu, tagged HB 193 to an unrelated piece of legislation, thereby insuring another vote on a bill that had failed under a reconsideration move.  “Dirty Republican Politics at its worse.”

Notwithstanding the above, they are fully aware that shifting government dollars to religious institutions is a flagrant violation of our Constitution.  Like good politicians, they are attempting to circumvent this violation of separation of church and state by moving the funds through a sham third party vehicle.  Don’t they realize that the citizens can see right through this sham?

It is time for a change, and the November elections are fast approaching.

Driveway Culverts

There is a widespread problem in Barnstead with the connections between the residential driveways and town roads.  Last winter, there were a number of areas where washouts and large masses of ice buildup occurred where town roads and driveways met.  The cause of the problem is usually the absence of, or failure of, the driveway culvert.

Driveway culverts and the headwalls on each end of the culvert are the complete responsibility of the property owner. If the culvert is clogged or not functioning properly, it is the responsibility of the property owner to clear the obstructions.  If the culvert is collapsed or structurally compromised, it is the responsibility of the property owner to repair or replace the culvert.  If the headwalls have collapsed or deteriorated, they too are the responsibility of the property owner for repair and maintenance.

Your cooperation in maintaining the driveway culverts is appreciated as it is necessary to prevent expensive damage being done to the town roads.

Contact us if you have any questions at 603-269-2091. Please call us if you are having a culvert replaced.  A no fee permit would be required.
