Community Calendar Volunteer
The
Barnstead community is developing a community-wide calendar where
all activities and events are scheduled. This would be a place
where a new family could turn to become involved in the community,
or an active community group could turn to schedule an event
so it wouldn’t conflict with a similar event.
We need
a volunteer to update this calendar on a weekly basis from notices
sent to them and what they find listed in the paper, posted on
school websites, etc. The calendar is through TeamUp and is
affiliated with the town library. Once active, it may be linked to
other town sites.
The
initial startup time involved in developing this calendar may be 10
hours a week; over time it would drop to an average of 5 hours a
week. The position would work closely with the town library
Director and a community support group. Work can be done from
home, or there are computers available for use at the library. For
additional information contact Danielle Hinton at Oscar Foss
Memorial Library (603)-269-3900 or
[email protected].
Volunteer should be personable and comfortable with technology.
April
Tri-Town Democrats’ Meeting Notice
Submitted By Evelyn A. Blais
Local
Democrats and left-leaning Independents are invited to the April
meeting of the Tri-Town Democrats on Monday, April 2nd to hear
Congressional District 1 candidate Mark MacKenzie speak.
Mark is
a former Manchester firefighter who led the state AFL-CIO for 25
years. He is a member of the New Hampshire House of
Representatives and is a member of the House Labor, Industrial and
Rehabilitation Committee. He is campaigning on the belief that
working families deserve an economy that works for them.
These
monthly meetings give you the opportunity to learn about local and
state political issues and how you can participate in making a
difference. You will share the evening with like-minded
individuals, and have the chance to express your opinions and
experiences.
The
guest speaker will be followed by action items and community
organizing. This meeting of the Tri-Town Democrats of
Barnstead, Gilmanton and Alton will be held at the Wagner Barn at 63
French Road in Gilmanton. Come for socializing and potluck any
time between 6:15 pm and 6:30 pm.
This
meeting is open to all residents of Barnstead, Alton and Gilmanton
who consider themselves moderate, liberal or progressive Democrats
or like-minded Independents. Potluck items to share are
encouraged but not required. For more information, email
[email protected] or
visit the “Barnstead, Gilmanton and Alton Democrats” Facebook page.

New
Hampshire GOP Accuse Democrats of Gun Grab
Recent
propaganda released by the state GOP takes a page directly from the
NRA’s playbook. With an inflammatory title, “Stop the Gun
Grab,” it falsely states: “New Hampshire Democrats want to take away
our Second Amendment Rights,” and accuses Democrat Steve Marchand of
proposing “an invasive gun ban.”
The GOP
is trying to score cheap political points after the recent massacre
of children in Florida. Clearly they are nervous. In the past year,
Democrats have won 9 of 11 special elections, flipping 5 seats from
red to blue. And Marchand intends to run against Sununu in
2018.
Marchand has proposed gun control measures, including a ban on
AR-15s, the gun used in many mass shootings, and “other
military-style semi-automatic weapons.”
Recent
polls show Americans overwhelmingly want stricter gun laws. Between
61% and 72% want AR-15 “type” weapons banned, and these percentages
are rising. Gun experts know this gun is just as dangerous as fully
automatic rifles and can easily be modified to shoot continuously.
Not
only have state Republicans refused to suspend rules to allow
Democrats to introduce more gun laws, they have chosen to stoke more
divisiveness and anger by lying to their base and ignoring the will
of the majority of Americans. And Sununu is complicit in this
decision.
The GOP
and Sununu boast about how “safe” our state is. This is misguided
complacency. I am sure the communities of Sandy Hook and Parkland
felt exactly the same way before their children were slaughtered.
The GOP should be ashamed.

Senate Bill 193: the “Education Freedom Savings Account.”
Whoever created that name must work for an ad agency. Sounds so
patriotic and rooted in “American values” - almost brings a tear to
the eye, doesn’t it?
“Choice!” they say. Parents have the right to choose what is best
for their child! Well, yes, but if this bill passes, only some
parents will get to choose and only at a cost to the rest of the
children and their communities. This so-called school voucher bill
(actually an education savings account or ESA) would divert public
funds to private, often unregulated schools and create a segregated
school system. And our public education system will pay, by having
even fewer resources and, in turn, be accused of “failing,” when our
representatives are the ones who keep delivering the blows.
There
are now multiple versions of SB 193 with varying pools of eligible
students and varying costs to the State and towns as the bill makes
its way through the process. However, what remains clear is that
property taxes will rise, public monies will go to private
schooling, with no accountability in place and no assessment of
learning outcomes. The experience in other states that have adopted
ESAs is not encouraging. Then there is the persistent question about
public funds going to schools that can discriminate as to who they
accept.
If SB
193 passes, in whatever form, our communities will get either higher
taxes or a reduction in services and programs offered by our public
schools. Some choice!
Please
talk to your representatives and then see how they vote. If your
current elected officials are not representing what is best for all
of our children and our communities, be sure to vote for an
alternative in November.
