Barnstead Seniors Stay Mobile

Although most of us intend to drive “forever”, we start cutting back on our driving time when safety becomes an issue.  Some seniors begin by driving less at night or by just driving near home. Did you know that Barnstead seniors have several transportation resources to help keep us mobile?

Pittsfield Senior Center offers a door-to-door bus service to Barnstead seniors and adults with disabilities.  The Community Action Program for Belknap-Merrimack Counties supports the bus and is part of the Rural Transportation System (RTS), which is handicapped accessible and can fit up to two wheelchairs.  An individual can take the bus to come to activities at the senior center or to do errands such as banking, medical appointments, hair appointments, shopping, or any other activities in the Pittsfield, Epsom, or Concord area for only $1.00 each way.   The Pittsfield Senior Bus supports Barnstead, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.    Please call Carol, the center manager at 435-8482 to reserve your seat and for more information.

Alton Senior Center – This fall the Laconia Senior Center RTS bus began offering the Alton center a bus service to Rochester on Thursdays between 9 am and 1:30 pm for shopping, medical appointments, banking or any other activities.  Call Roney, the center manager at 876-7102 to make your reservation.  Alton seniors can be picked up at home to visit the center or go to Rochester.  Barnstead seniors would drive to the Alton Senior Center to meet the bus going to Rochester.  Depending on the level of need, the bus may be able to pick up Barnstead seniors at their home in the future. The suggested donation is $2 per round trip.

What about getting a ride to other communities or on other weekdays?  The Community Action Program for Belknap-Merrimack Counties funds one other service, the Volunteer Driver Program.  This program also provides rides for seniors (age 60+) to medical appointments, shopping and other activities.  The rides are available weekdays from 5 am to 6 pm.   You need to register for the program at 224-8043 and the coordinator will explain how to book your ride 3-5 days in advance.  Your driver will be a volunteer from a nearby community, over age 21 and with a reliable vehicle.  Since this service relies on volunteers, it is not a guaranteed ride.

If you go to the web-site and select volunteer drive program, there are some additional resources for those having cancer treatment, who are blind or who need transportation for Medicaid services.  For additional help call the Mid-State Mobility Manager Larisa Djuvelek-Ruggiero at 225-3295.

Happy Trails….
