Letter To The Editor

To the Editor,

Much discussion has occurred recently about the loss of department chiefs in the town of Barnstead.  Citizens have repeatedly reiterated to the Selectmen that the voters want replacement chiefs hired and they want them hired by a process utilizing selection committees.

And yet, somehow certain Selectmen think it is okay for them to ignore the wishes of the voters and do whatever they want to do. That is not okay with me!

At the January 14, 2014 Selectmen’s meeting, when challenged by a voter in the audience that the Board was not following the will of the voters, Selectman Barnard agreed that the Board probably was not following the will of the voters.  That is not okay with me!

The January 20, 2014 edition of the Manchester Union Leader ran an article with a headline reading, “As police, fire chiefs retire, no replacement hires planned in Barnstead.”   Selectman Kerr is quoted in the article as saying that the Board may revisit a 2012 proposal from the Sheriff’s department to provide police coverage for the town.  This proposal was rejected by voters by a two to one margin.

By his statements, Selectmen Kerr demonstrates his belief that the directives from the voters can be ignored and that the Board of Selectmen can do whatever they want to do.  That is not okay with me!

The voters should not tolerate Selectmen who ignore the desires of the citizens in town.  Voters need to prepare to vote for Selectmen who respect rather than ignore the will of the people.

Barnstead Duncan.jpg

Duncan McDougall, executive director of the Children’s Literacy Foundation, kicked off the first of two storytelling presentations at Barnstead Elementary School yesterday. The children loved listening to Duncan’s animated stories and were thrilled to learn about the new books he brought for the school and library. After visiting the school Duncan came to the library for a very special story time with local childcare providers and their children. All providers received 10 free books and each child chose a book to take home. These events are part of a grant the Oscar Foss Memorial Library received through the CLiF foundation.
