Letter To The Editor

Re: Barnstead Planning, Zoning and Building Inspector Secretary Hours

Here we go, again!

Last year, certain members of the Budget Committee aimed their uninformed sights on the position of the Barnstead Planning, Zoning and Building Inspector’s secretary.  Through the budgeting process, these people attempted to dramatically cut the weekly hours of the secretary, erroneously believing the office had issued only three building permits during the previous year.  What these people chose not to understand is that while there were only three building permits issued for new home construction, there were over four hundred building permits issued for various renovations and improvements.

At Town Meeting last year, the Chair of the Planning Board, the Chair of the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Building Inspector and a co-worker all spoke strongly against the curtailment of the hours for the secretary.  The voters at Town Meeting supported the secretary and reinstated the hours.

But, once again, this year these members of the Budget Committee have attempted to reduce the secretary’s hours from thirty hours a week to ten hours a week.  The Budget Committee members who are proposing the cuts have made no effort to inform themselves of the actual workload at the office.  This is purely a personal vendetta by certain individuals on the Budget Committee.  For their own petty reasons, they are targeting an employee who is capable, reliable and very valued by the people with whom she works.

There is absolutely no reason to cut the hours of this town employee. In fact, the Budget Committee member that proposed the curtailment of the secretary’s hours admitted, publicly, that he understood that the effort would be reversed by the public vote at town meeting, but that he still felt he needed to propose the cuts.  Let’s stop this nonsense and let a well functioning department continue to operate efficiently.

Eileen C. Murley, Chair

Barnstead Zoning Board of Adjustment
