We are having the Horseshoe Tournament at Joe’s Barn. The date is August 21st. Registration is at 10:00 a.m. and the games start at 11:00 a.m. Rain or Shine!

Locke Lake Social Club

We had a great July. Everyone enjoyed our evening on the Wini Bell out of Wolfeboro. We all enjoyed the Chicken Dinner at the Lodge with our Christmas in July Yankee Swap.

August has slowed down a little. We will be having a Lobster Bake at the Pavillion on Locke Lake on August 28th. If interested, you must have your money in to Vi Russell or Marie Farmer by August 21st.

On August 31st we will be going to Wolfeboro to hear the U.S. Air Force Band. We will be leaving the Lodge at 4:30 PM. Bring a picnic lunch for yourselves and some to share. It will be fun.

September 1st will be our last fishing trip of the season. Please call Ray Gilmore if interested.

September 11th will be our Monkey Golf. It will start at 9:30 a.m. and is open to anyone in Locke Lake. In the evening at 6:00 PM we will have a Pot Luck Supper and give out the trophy.

Don’t forget water aerobics, they are on Monday and Wednesday at  Pool 2 on Winwood Dr. at 10:00 AM.

Bingo will be on August 20th at 7:00 PM at the Lodge.

Anyone in Locke Lake interested in joining us is welcome. Our meetings are the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the Month at 9:30AM for coffee and conversation. 10:00 AM for the meeting.

John A. Hess Sr.

Barnstead - John A. Hess Sr., 84, of Crest Ridge Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

He was born in Somerville, Mass., the son of John and Agnes Hess. He worked as a shipfitter and a lather and retired as a carpenter from the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plain, Mass.

He summered in Barnstead since 1970 and wintered in Keystone Heights, Fla. He was an Army veteran and served in the 3rd Army under Gen. Patten. He was awarded a Silver Star and served in the Normandy invasion with the 603rd ReCon Tank Destroyer Co.

He is survived by three sons, John A. Hess Jr. of Wakefield, Mass., Warren F. Hess of Florida, and Steven R. Hess of Lynn, Mass.; a daughter, Karen Hess of Seabrook; three grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Wilson and Patricia Garaphano; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Perkins & Pollard Memorial Home, Pittsfield.

Evelyn Paulson Face

Evelyn Paulson Face, 93, formerly of Holiday, FL, and Needham, MA, died August 8, 2010,  in Palm Harbor, FL.

Born in Weston, MA; she grew up in Swampscott, MA, and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1935.

After attending business school, she was employed by Boston Safe Deposit Box Co. She summered at Suncook Lake in NH, and was an avid swimmer and skier. Active in Girl Scouts, she received their highest honor, the Golden Eaglet, and continued to lead scout troops for many years.

She was a member of the Boston Outing Club, of Christ Church in Needham, MA, and played violin in local orchestras.

She retired from Whittemore Associates in 1972.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Raymond G. Face, in 2000; her parents, Joseph W. Paulson and Olga Markoff Paulson; her sister, Dorothea Paulson Baker; her brother, Joseph W. Paulson, Jr.; and her nephew, Jeffrey W. Baker.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Face Glassman, and son-in-law, Alan S. Glassman, of Center Barnstead, NH, and Naples, FL; her granddaughter, Jennifer E. Jacobs and her husband, Maj. Nathan P. Jacobs of Charlottesville, VA; a niece, Susan Baker Porter, and her husband, Ronald Porter, of Greer, SC; and two nephews, Richard P. Baker and David R. Baker of Felton, DE.

Services will be private.
