Music In The Park Concerts
Celebrate the 4th of July with friends and live music as the “Music in
the Park” concerts continue on the parade grounds in Barnstead.
From
6-8 p.m., Lunch At The Dump brings their mix of traditional and
contemporary bluegrass, folk, and blues, along with western swing.
This acoustic string band, with members from the seacoast and central
New Hampshire, has been playing throughout New England for over thirty
years.
Bring a
blanket, chair, the kids, the dog (and pooper scooper please), snacks,
and prepare to dance, sing along or just chill to the talents of these
awesome artists! Various local non-profits will be offering
refreshments as fundraisers. Thanks for your support.
Concerts are held every Saturday night, from 6-8 p.m., on the Barnstead
Parade Grounds off Parade Road. The final concert caps off summer at Old
Home Day on August 29th!
Barnstead Police Department
On
06/24/2009, at approximately 10:40 a.m., members of the Barnstead Police
Department and the Barnstead Fire/Rescue responded to a report of an
unknown white powder placed inside a mailbox in the area of Varney and
Rogers Roads. The caller also reported that she had inadvertently
touched the powder.
Barnstead and Gilmanton Police officers arrived in the area and blocked
non-essential vehicular traffic. Barnstead Fire/Rescue arrived and setup
a command post, while Barnstead Police began an initial investigation.
The
United States Post Office in Barnstead was informed of the incident, at
which time the U.S. Postal Inspection Service was contacted.
Investigators from the Postal Inspection Service responded and inspected
the powder. The powder was found not to be toxic or potentially
hazardous to the residents.
The
vehicular and pedestrian traffic was shut down on Varney Road until 2:00
p.m. while officers investigated the incident.
Letter
First,
I apologize to Mr. Burns, I meant not to initiate a debate but merely
provide a single point of view toward lessening his wonder of “just what
people are thinking about when these words are used.” In retrospect, I
see how my, largely impromptu, response can come off as adversarial. My
error was interpreting the quoted comment more as a rhetorical form of
‘what does it mean to you?’ and for that mistake I apologize.
That
said, I also remain faithful to my words. I am sorry that I find
dictionary definitions to be somewhat insipid. The dictionary merely
relates the most bland and common interpretation of a word and fails to
capture the full potential of its essence. As example, I submit the word
‘justice’ which my dictionary defines as “just behavior or treatment.”
Also, ‘just’ is defined as “based on what is morally right and fair.”
Likewise, ‘fair’ is “in accordance with rules or standards; just” and
‘morally’ is “in relation to standards of good and bad character or
conduct.” We continue with ‘standard’ being “an idea or thing used as a
measure, norm, or model in comparative evaluations” and ‘good’
presumably meaning “possessing moral virtue.” Completing the loop,
‘virtue’ is simply “behavior showing high moral standards” and we are
left with a subjective definition that has no fixed base. Lacking a
fixed basis, “justice” is subject to the whims of time and place. After
all, if justice were absolute George Washington would have been made
President and summarily executed for treason against the King of
England.
To
close, unfortunately, the latter part of the pledge’s “liberty and
justice for all” isn’t possible and I’m sure some will find that just
wicked... whatever that means.

WANTED! Children After God’s Own Heart
Howdy,
Ya’ll! Are you ready for a rip roarin’ good time? This year the Center
Barnstead Christian Church will be having a Western Themed Vacation
Bible School entitled, “Wanted! Children After God’s Own Heart”. It will
be from July 27th – 31st from 9:00 – 10:30 AM for children ages 4 years
old to the 6th grade.
Our
program promises a lot of fun and activities for the children. Although
our VBS has a wild west theme, we will be learning about David and Saul
(the first two Kings of Israel) based on the stories found in 1 Samuel
16-31. The lessons will focus on troubles that David experienced because
of Saul’s jealousy, and will highlight the virtues that God looks for in
Children after His own Heart, as David was. In addition to the stories,
there will be wild west games, cowboy crafts and a snack time.
Mark
your calendars Buckaroos for July 27th – 31st and join us for the best
Vacation Bible School in all the west! For more information please
contact the church at 269-8831. The Center Barnstead Christian Church is
located on Route 126, next to the Town Hall.
Locke Lakers
Submitted By Peggy Gingras
The Locke Lakers summer has started with
some fun events planned. We just had our Welcome Back Wine and Cheese
Party. It was well attended and we all had a wonderful time. At our June
23rd meeting we decided to have our July meetings a little different. We
usually have our meetings the second and fourth Tuesday of the month,
but in July we will be having the July 14th meeting at 10AM and the July
28th changed to July 29th at 7:00PM at the lodge, so that many of you
who may be interested and can’t make our meetings can come and see what
we are all about. Our “Christmas in July”, which is our annual BBQ date
has been changed from July 16th to July 26th. This event will be held at
the pavillion. In case of bad weather it will be in the lodge from
1:00PM - 4:00PM. Call Vi and Paul Russel for information at 776-4454.
The menu will be a Fried Chicken dinner.
We
discussed the by-laws and many potential changes were made. Now we await
the finished package.
Ray
Gilmore came up with some new fishing dates. July 24th, August 28th and
Sept. 25th. For more information call Ray at 776-6575.
Don’t
forget our next meeting July 14th at 10:00 at the lodge. Please come
early and have a cup of coffee and a snack. A special thanks to Anne
Shea for all the delicious baked goods she has been making for our
meetings.
We will
be passing out brochures at the annual meeting July 25th at Prospect
Mountain High School.
