Alton Garden Club

On November 18th, the Alton Garden Club held its final meeting of the year, a luncheon. At this time, the club was pleased to honor Doris Barnes of Laconia, by naming their High School Scholarship after her. It will be called “The Doris Barnes, Alton Garden Club Scholarship,” in honor of her untiring devotion to education.

Mrs. Barnes, a veteran teacher of 62 years, taught all subjects from grades K - 8. She was a Guidance Counselor in both Junior and Senior High Schools for 16 years. She has been volunteering in grades 1-8, tutoring all subjects.

The “Excellence in Education” known as the “Ed”ies, honoring teachers and schools of excellence, has established a Life Time Achievement Award in her name, to retiring educators. The Alton Garden Club was proud and pleased to be able to honor Doris for all she has done for the children of our towns and for her years of devotion to their causes.

Missions Trip To New York City

Men from Center Barnstead Christian Church (CBCC) traveled to New York to do volunteer construction work at a camp for disadvantaged and disabled children. The nine men included Scott and Evan Ward, Paul Warren, Powell Montegue, Sam McKeen, Ken Borgia, Mario Troiano, Kevin Goble, and Paul Blake.

The camp run by Children’s Bible Fellowship is located on 200 beautiful acres in Carmel , NY . For over 60 years the goal of the ministry has been to make disciples of New York ‘s forgotten fields. Every summer two vastly different programs are run: Camp Joy, the older of the two camps, caters to the needs of inner city children from New York City. Camp Hope specializes in meeting the needs of disabled campers from the New York metropolitan area.

Maintenance of the two camps is done by volunteers over the course of the year. During the two days at camp the CBCC team worked to strip and shingle a roof, build a set of steps, lay a new floor and install an oil tank.

For more information on the work that Children’s Bible Fellowship is doing visit www.cbfny.org/

CBCC has an active men’s group that serves the needs of the local community as well as other parts of the US and oversees. Both skilled and unskilled labor is always welcome and in need. CBCC’s Sunday service is at 10:30 AM and is located on Route 126, next to the Town Hall. Brian Gower, the pastor, can be reached at 603-269-8831.

Seeking Nominees for Annette P Schmitt Unsung Hero Award

Nomination packets are now available for the Annette P. Schmitt Unsung Hero Award, presented each year by the Belknap County Citizens Council on Children and Families. This award honors an individual who has shown a long-standing commitment to children and families in Belknap County through behind-the-scenes activities without any expectation of recognition. Eligible candidates include those who volunteer on behalf of children and families or non-volunteer individuals who provide exceptional service to children and families beyond the scope of their employment.

The 2009 recipient will be announced by Special Justice Willard Martin during the annual Belknap County Convocation on Children and Families on Tuesday, March 31st. The winner will receive an individual award and his or her name will be engraved on a plaque that hangs in the Council offices.

Says Judge Martin, “This award is designed to acknowledge the efforts of Belknap County residents who go the extra mile in bringing positive changes to the lives of families.”

The Schmitt Unsung Hero Award honors New Hampshire resident, the late Annette P. Schmitt, who left a generous bequest to support programs and projects that improve the lives of children and families in Belknap County and the State. Over the past several years this fund has been the primary resource for sustaining a number of comprehensive systemic changes in Belknap County, including juvenile justice practices, the Belknap County Citizens Council on Children and Families, and the introduction of Community Justice principles throughout the County.

Over the past years, previous winners of the Schmitt Unsung Hero Award include Leo Sanfacon (Gilford), Wendy French (Tilton), Dave Tryon (Tilton), Dawn McCartney (Barnstead), Paul Plimpton (Belmont), and Deb Williams (Laconia). Sanfacon was recognized in 2008 for his volunteer contributions with the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region; Wendy French of Tilton, in 2007 for her work with 4-H youth; and the late Dave Tryon of Tilton in 2006, for his tireless efforts with youth in the Winnisquam Regional School District. Past honorees also include Dawn McCartney of Barnstead in 2005, for her efforts in her community; Paul Plimpton of Belmont in 2004, for using his skills and interest in sports to encourage boys and girls in the Lakes Region; and Deb Williams of Laconia in 2003, for her volunteer work with youth in Laconia.

Nomination Forms are available at the Belknap County Citizens Council website, www.bccj.org, or by calling Kathy Calvin at 527-9182. Completed
Nomination Forms are due by Friday, February 20, 2009.
