To the Editor:
Id like to take a moment to point out, nowhere in our Constitution does it say that we have to have 9x Supreme Court Justices. That said, it wouldnt require a Constitutional amendment to add more seats. In fact, Congress has expanded the Supreme Court five times throughout our American history.
Congress should use its constitutional authority to rebalance the Supreme Court. (which has been taken over by a supermajority that holds extreme views outside of the mainstream of legal thought and is generally out of step with most Americans! That is why Congress must pass the Judiciary Act. This would add four seats to the Supreme Court and help stem the right-wing supermajority’s attacks on our fundamental freedoms, (including but not limited too; the right to access abortion care, the right to have new evidence seen if that evidence could exonerated you, and more.)
There’s nothing stopping Congress from adding justices— …except for the political will to do so. In fact, recent polling showed that the majority of the American voters actually support expanding the court.
This is why I am urging Congress to pass and support the Judiciary Act of 2021 and add four seats to the Supreme Court.
American’s deserve to have their views represented in the high courts. We must restore balance to our Supreme Court.
