New Futures Statement on Senate Vote
CONCORD, N.H. – Earlier today, after months of delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Hampshire Senate reconvened in-person to vote on several pieces of legislation critical to the health and wellness of the Granite State. Among other votes, the Senate passed HB 1280, which includes several provisions to address the rising prices of prescription drugs; HB 1245, which raises the tobacco sales age to 21; HB 1623, which supports and permanently expands telehealth services; and HB 1558, which supports the implementation of behavioral health supports in schools.
In response, Michele Merritt, President and CEO of New Futures, New Hampshire’s leading health policy and advocacy organization, released the following statement:
“As the world confronts the COVID-19 pandemic and health disparities caused by systemic racism, it is critical New Hampshire lawmakers recommit to promoting the well-being of all Granite Staters,” Merritt said. “These four critical bills make significant improvements to health and safety of New Hampshire’s youth and families, the cost of prescription drug prices, and access to quality, affordable health care now and into the future.
“The Senate’s affirmative votes today represent major steps in the right direction for health equity in the Granite State.”
Looking forward, these bills will now head back to House of Representatives for consideration.
“We thank each Senator who voted to support these critical pieces of legislation. We look forward to continue working with policy makers in the House and the Governor’s office to pass them into law and improve the health of our state.”
