Peterson Cram Post 75 Pittsfield American Legion News

Submitted by Dan M. Ward, Post Commander

Post 75 reconvened Post meetings on September 8th after having not met for three months due to vacations and scheduling issues.

It was voted that any regularly scheduled monthly meeting that normally falls on the first Monday of the month that is a holiday (Labor Day or other holidays) will be rescheduled to the second Monday of that month at the same time 7:30 p.m.

The Concord Home Depot will be at the Post on 25 September to begin building a new rest room on the first floor. This wonderfully donated Home Depot project will help make using the rest room much safer than having to go down the narrow steps to the basement where the current rest rooms are located.  The Post is in need of a licensed plumber who would be willing to help the Home Depot team connect several pipes to complete this much needed project.  Please contact Scott Ward Post Adjutant (603-475-5959) if you can meet this need. We need to know by 24 September please.

Fellow Legion members and Veterans of Pittsfield, we could use your help here at Post 75.  We want to continue honoring ALL Veterans on both Memorial and Veterans Days however it is getting more difficult to do so as we only have on average five members who regularly attend meetings.  There are over 300 Pittsfield residents who receive the Veteran’s Property tax reduction.  We are simply asking those Pittsfield Veterans to please come…and HELP us to keep Post 75 a part of the fabric that is the Pittsfield community.  Can you give 1 hour per month to support fellow Veterans?  PLEASE consider joining us.  Any questions concerning membership please contact Dan M. Ward Commander at 603-496-0848.  We meet each first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at Post 75, 3 Loudon Rd in Pittsfield.

Our next regularly scheduled Post meeting is Monday October 6th at 7:30 p.m. Please join us. Refreshments will be served.

You can continue your support by making donations throughout the year in our collection boxes at Danis’ Market, Jack’s Pizza, Bell Brothers, Maxfield’s and Parker’s Restaurant. Thank you again for your support.

The Durochers Live

Free Concert

The Durocher Family is an energetic young band from Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  Come to New Beginnings, Church of the Nazarene, Loudon, on Friday, September 26, at 7pm to enjoy a fun time of inspiring worship and great family entertainment!  The church is located just north of Concord’s Red Roof Inn on the corner of Route 106 and Staniels Road and is handicapped accessible.  There is no admission fee.

Every age group will love these excellent musicians! You will hear creative originals and old favorites.  They are spirited, passionate, and demonstrate a robust musical creativity that is both rare and remarkable.  This is one band you don’t want to miss.

The band is composed of one mom, one dad and nine of their 12 children. The youngest is eight and the oldest of the band is a set of triplets age 23. They have been playing together since 2009 and are serving God with their musical talents. The Durochers have five CD projects in circulation featuring intriguing instrumentation, intricate harmonies, and an eclectic mix of acoustic sounds.  From the shores of Hawaii to the border of Texas to the Island of Prince Edward to the West Coast of Alaska they spread the great news of Jesus Christ’s redeeming power! That is why they travel and sing.

Their testimony is how God used two ordinary sinners and is using them for His extraordinary purpose. The Durochers state that if Christ can redeem our lives, marriage and family, He can redeem any. There is no problem too big that He cannot overcome! We encourage families to grow in Christ together and love each other, christianity starts in the home!

Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund Update

Submitted By Carole Richardson

Now that summer is almost over and fall is in the air, vacations are over and the kids are back in school, I wanted to give you an update on the Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund project.  Phase one is complete (at a cost of $18,960) and I am concentrating on raising funds for Phase two (I currently have $2,500) which will hopefully be completed by Memorial Day of 2015.  Phase two will continue the fencing up High Street – it will replace the ugly rusting chain link fencing that is currently in place.

I have been humbled by the kind words and donations that have come from places I would have never expected.   Last week I received a check from a family in Texas who has loved ones in grave sites at the Floral Park Cemetery.  I would encourage all of you to spread the word and tell your family and friends about this project.  I am not on Facebook but I am amazed at how far the word can be spread by social media.  You can all help me with that.  I have been approached on the street while watering flowers for the Beautification Committee with donations and encouraging me to continue with this much needed project.

I would like to thank all those individuals, organizations and businesses who have so generously given to this fund and ask that you continue to send donations so that funding will be available for Phase two.  A continued special thank you to Paul Rogers at Jitters for allowing me to collect funds in the donation box placed on the counter, and thank you to all of his patrons who have donated with your spare change – remember every penny counts.  I would also like to thank The SUN for continually printing my articles seeking donations for this much-needed project and to Andi Riel for mentioning the project in her Sunday Monitor column.  Remember your contributions to the Fence Fund are tax deductible.

Thank you for your suggestions and kind words, and please continue to send your donations to the “Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund” P.O. Box 98 or 595 Tilton Hill Road, Pittsfield, NH 03263.  If you should have questions, please call me at 435-8351.

Josiah Carpenter Library News

September 2014

Please join us for a cup of coffee and some great discussions! The “Read, Meet and Talk” book club has been busy throughout the summer. We have enjoyed reading Harm by Kathy Kale, a new author from Florida and Orphan Train by Christine Baker Kline. As a follow up to our enjoyment of Orphan Train will we be taking on “The Kitchen House” by Kathleen Grissom on Tuesday, September23rd. We are still meeting at the Pittsfield Community Center but we are now meeting from 10:15 to 11:45. Our group is saddened by the loss of one of our loyal members, Pat Carson. We will certainly miss her for many reasons including her book suggestions, contributions to our discussions and her pleasant demeanor. We hope to continue to expand our group and include others with our enjoyment of reading titles that evoke productive and lively discussions.

Do you like to knit? Are you an expert or a beginner? Would you like to share your skills with others and knit in the company of others? The library is willing to provide a space for a small group of knitters in the afternoons from 3:30-4:30 during the months of October, November, January and February. Please call the library and let the staff know if you are interested in forming this group.

The Josiah Teen Book Worms meet the Teen Writers Circle in a special evening of storytelling on October 23rd. The teens will read moderately scary stories to ages kindergarten through 5th grade from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Then at 7pm the evening will transpire into a reading for teens entering middle school. Our group of teen writers will be reading from their own repertoire of scary stories as well as sharing some of the traditional autumn tales of terror. Think of it as a preview to Halloween.

Join the fun with Mrs. Grainger on Thursday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Preschool Story hour; engaging young readers with stories, crafts and snacks. Story hour will begin again with an introduction to Library Card sign-up month and books about the library. Then fall into the Fall with a story hour about Grandparents and then Squirrels. Stay tuned for more details about a special guest storyteller and musician from Durham who tells folktales and stories while beating the drums.

Please call the library for further details: 435-8406

Pittsfield, NH Crime Watch

It has been a while since our last meeting on July 21. At our July meeting we discussed speeding concerns in certain areas. Sargent Walter explained that if the police are contacted, they will make an effort to start policing in those areas more frequently to help keep the speed down. He also made us aware that Pittsfield shares a radar trailer with neighboring towns that can also be setup on sections of roadway by special request to also help act as a deterrent.

There was also some discussion about video surveillance in the downtown area and if that would be a possibility to get set up. Sargent Walter did say that the extra patrolling in the downtown area, which was afforded by way of a grant, has helped with issues downtown, but that funding won’t last forever and the group was bringing of the possibility of the surveillance to supplement the actual patrols.

Lastly, we also had another member who took part in a ride-along who was able to share their experiences they had while riding with an officer for a few hours.

Instead of a regular meeting in August, the Crime Watch attended National Night Out. For anyone who is not familiar, National Night Out is a nation-wide community police awareness raising event held on the first Tuesday of August. The Crime Watch group had a booth setup to help in getting the word out to those who may not yet know that Pittsfield has a Crime Watch.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday September 29th at 6:30PM at Jitters Café, so don’t forget to mark your calendars. At this meeting we will be looking to discuss ideas for possible guest speakers. Some example ideas have been Home Security, Self Defense and Gun Safety. We welcome anyone to attend who is interested.

Remember, if you see or hear anything suspicious, please call the Pittsfield Police Dispatch at 435-7211.

Mum Sale

The Suncook Valley Sno-Riders would like to express their appreciation for the community support to make our annual mum sale a huge success.  Thank you to Donna Ward from EXIT Reward Realty for allowing us to use her property to sell from.  Also thank you to the Osborne’s, the Freese’s and the Metcalf’s for your generosity and willingness to help our club. Lastly, we cannot forget the numerous volunteers that did the scheduling, running when supplies got low and everyone that manned the sale. We would also like to say congratulations to Mr & Mrs Carl Osborne from Epsom, who are getting married soon and stopped by to get their decorations from us.  Thank you once again and see you next year.
