A Theater Near You:
Mapping Cinema History in the Granite State
The Pittsfield Historical Society is presenting movie night –
complete with popcorn! Find out the answers to these questions
posed by a UNH professor:
When did movies first arrive in New Hampshire? Where did they play?
Who presented them and how did they circulate?
Who saw them? When and where was the first generation of movie
theaters constructed?
How did a fledgling new medium run by traveling showmen become one
of the most popular and enduring pastimes of the 20th century?
Come explore these questions and more by joining us for a
presentation and discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Klenotic at the
Society’s next meeting, Thursday, May 8, at 7 PM at the Society’s
Museum on Elm Street.
Klenotic is Associate Professor of Communication Arts at the
University of New Hampshire. He will present examples
from his current research, which aims to create a comprehensive,
visually engaging, interactive map that charts every venue where
movies played in the Granite State from the medium’s origins in 1896
to the rise of television in the 1940s.
Those in attendance will be welcome to share their own knowledge of
local movie venues and their own memories of “going to the movies” –
including Pittsfield’s own Scenic Theater and other local movie
houses.
Though focused on New Hampshire, this project is part of a larger,
comparative research effort to map the public infrastructure of
cultural networks created by the historical development of an
internationally shared habit of moviegoing.
Prof. Klenotic joins us as a participant with the UNH Speakers’
Bureau.

Meet Our Members
FF/EMT Robyn Cushing
Next up in Pittsfield Fire Department’s “Meet Our Members” series is
FF/EMT Robyn Cushing. Robyn began working as a per diem EMT for
Pittsfield in August of 2013.
Q: Why did you become a firefighter/EMT?
A: It goes back to the days of when I was a kid watching
“Emergency.” Every day I would sit in front of the TV faithfully and
watch Johnny and Roy and to this day I still watch every rerun on
TV. Firefighting and EMS has been a dream of mine since I was a
child.
Q: How long have you been a FF/EMT?
A: I obtained my Firefighter Level I in July 1996. I
joined the Allenstown Fire Department in April of 2001 and then went
on to get my Firefighter Level II in August of 2003. I became a
Basic EMT in July of 2005 and accepted a job offer as an EMT with
Tri-Town Ambulance the following month and I continue to work there.
In May 2009 I became an EMT-I. From there, I was promoted to
Lieutenant and EMS coordinator on the Allenstown Fire Department in
August of 2010. In October 2010 I joined AMR in the City of
Manchester and later joined Pittsfield as a per diem EMT in 2013.
In March 2014, I reached the accomplishment of obtaining AEMT
certification.
Q: What have you learned while being a FF/EMT?
A: The true meaning of Brother & Sisterhood: No matter where you are
or what you need, your extended family is there for you in a time of
need. I have had a few rough patches in my life and my extended Fire
and EMS family has never once let me down. They have always been
there to lift me and my family up. I believe deep in my heart, and
will live by these words until the day I die “YOU NEVER LEAVE A
BROTHER OR SISTER BEHIND, YOU GO IN AS A TEAM, YOU COME OUT AS A
TEAM.”
Congratulations
Angela Perlupo
March - Student Of The Month,
University of Maine At Presque Isle
We are pleased to announce that Angela Perlupo has been selected
Student of the Month for March. Angela is from Pittsfield New
Hampshire and she is a junior majoring in Elementary Education.
Angela is a very active member of the UMPI community. For years,
Angela has welcomed and helped students and staff in her work study
job at the Library. Angela is an all-around positive role model.
The following remarks were taken from the nomination forms submitted
on Angela’s behalf:
“Angela Perlupo has been a library work study student for over two
years. She has an amazing attitude and work ethic. She always has a
smile on her face and is the epitome of customer service. Due to her
abilities and maturity levels, she has taken on special projects at
the library that we would not normally give to students. She has
been instrumental in helping us digitize a very large paper
collection and without her willingness to work on weekends, it would
be difficult for us to be open as many hours as we are. She treats
everyone with respect and is excellent at her job.”
“It is my pleasure to nominate Angela Perlupo as Student of the
Month. Angela works here at the UMPI Library and she has become our
“resident ‘staff’” student. She never hesitates to take on
projects, has been working on two (2) digitalization projects for
our Special Collections Room. Both will benefit the University of
Maine at Presque Isle and also the surrounding communities that we
serve. Besides staff, Angela is the ONLY student that has been
assigned this project.
Angela’s presence here in the Library is warm, friendly and
welcoming to faculty/staff/students and our community patrons. She
is very knowledgeable and very helpful to our patrons. Her work
ethics speak for themselves. Angela’s knowledge of Library services
has made a difference in our student’s lives. She is able to get
their accounts set up, put money on their accounts and work with
them if they need some help with the computers. She is also very
knowledgeable with our collection and the Library of Congress
classification. She is able to help our patrons in finding what
they need.
As of this semester, Angela has been promoted to “Student
Administrative Aide 2”. With this, she is now Supervising our
Saturday hours (12 noon – 4:30pm) along with supervising one of our
other work-study students in order for the Library to stay open and
offer our services to the patrons.
Angela is an all around pleasant young lady that excels at whatever
she undertakes. She is well liked and respected by all the staff
as well as her fellow work-study students. I have to say that even
I go to her at times to get the correct answer……. During the summer
and UMPI breaks, Angela works for a Day Care center in her home
town. She is very well liked, not only by the “little ones”, but by
the staff and supervisor she works for.”
Thank You Merrill!

The Pittsfield Players Present Making God Laugh At The Scenic
Theatre May 15 - 18
Making God Laugh, an original comedy about home and
family, will be co-presented by The Majestic Theatre and The
Pittsfield Players at The Scenic Theatre, 6 Depot Street,
Pittsfield, NH on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 15, 16 and 17
at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 pm. Tickets, which are $12
per person, can be purchased via The Players’ website at
www.pittsfieldplayers.com or reserved by
calling 435-8852.
Originally produced by The Majestic Theatre and presented at The
Chateau Restaurant in Manchester earlier this year, this touching
“dramedy” is brought to the Scenic Theatre with the cooperation of
The Majestic Theatre.
The show is a family comedy that takes place in four scenes, each
ten years apart, set at various holidays. Starting in 1980, the
newly “launched” kids – a priest, an aspiring actress and a former
star football player – all return home, where we learn of their
plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. The “empty
nest” parents contend with their own changes too, as old family
rituals and dubious recipes are trotted out and ancient tensions
flare up. Over the course of thirty years’ worth of celebrations we
see how, despite what we may have in mind, we often arrived at
unexpected destinations.
Don’t miss out on this great show! Call 603-435-8852
to reserve your tickets or visit
www.pittsfieldplayers.com for more
information.
Doors open one hour prior to the start of the show. Refreshments and
raffles will be available.

Well, we had an awesome time last week at our Tops Banquet. We would
like to thank the ladies at the Berakah who hosted a beautiful
turkey dinner. After we had dinner we went downstairs and enjoyed a
night of awards that were handed out to our Kops members and our
Tops members who had lost weight. It sure is an accomplishment when
we lose weight and it’s nice to be recognized for all the hard work.
I say, “Congrats to all that received awards and keep up the hard
work.”
Also would like to thank Suzie for taking the time to make all the
banners and doing such a great job on them and Pat for her awards
that she handed out.
Our Kops of the week was Sandy and our Tops was John. Kudos to those
who were runners up. We had a great weight loss week with a total of
10.8 net loss. Let’s all keep up the good work.
Welcome pens were handed out to our upcoming board members. All in
all it was a very nice night of visiting and seeing so many smiling
faces.
We had a door prize which was won by April which was a nice spring
plant.
The night ended with a poem read by our leader, Janis, and some
encouraging words. If anyone would like to join us, we always
welcome new faces anytime. We meet at 5:30 for weight in and at 6:30
for our meeting at the Berakah on Fairview Road in Pittsfield. Any
questions please call Janis White at 603-491-5532 or Claire Coll at
603-435-7271. Hope everyone has a good week and see you all lighter
next week!

Celebration.

wearing Pittsfield
Balloon Rally T-shirts.
In January of 2014 the Pittsfield Women of Rotary awarded their last
scholarship of $1500.00 to a PMHS graduate, through the Pamela
Jenisch Cheney Fund, which we founded and oversaw. Over the years
we have given many thousands of dollars to help promote further
education.
From its beginnings in 1947, the Women of Rotary have been proud to
earn — and give generously — to Dollars for Scholars, Town
Beautification and the Hanging Flower Fund, also to the Cancer
Drive, the Heart Fund, Indian League Baseball, St. Paul’s School
Advanced Study Program, Tilton Hill Baseball Field Project, and
many, many other worthy causes. Reaching out overseas we have even
sent Balloon Rally t-shirts to a Children’s Hospital in Calcutta,
India, to Honduras, and Haiti.
We supported the Rotary club at both the Penny Sales and Balloon
Rallies, as well as participating enthusiastically in the Old Home
Day Parades with our creative floats, and given books to the
Pittsfield and Barnstead Libraries. Volunteers have helped at the
Historical Society and we have supported the Pittsfield Players.
Untold numbers of sandwiches were provided to the Red Cross Blood
Drives when requested by the PTO and we baked countless numbers of
cookies for the children at the Dustin Park Christmas Tree Lighting.
Additionally, we installed a brightly lit Christmas Tree at the Dam
Site on Water Street and have been pleased to make it an annual
project for many years. Learning of tight budgets, for years we
have supplied thousands of cartons of much-needed facial tissues to
both the Pittsfield Elementary School and the Blueberry Express Day
Care.
To raise money for our philanthropies, we have held food sales,
rummage sales, put on fashion shows, held card parties and silent
auctions, till we discovered our best source of income was cooking
and serving suppers to the Rotary Club and Balloon Rally Crews. We
also sold Balloon Rally t-shirts, baseball caps and souvenir pins.
Over the years we managed to broaden our horizons with interesting
and inspiring speakers and programs at our meetings, and had a lot
of fun and formed lasting friendships along the way.
Therefore, it was with much sadness and regret that in 2013 we voted
to disband. Our group has inevitably aged, moved out of town,
became incapacitated or passed away. Our best efforts to attract a
new and younger membership have proven unsuccessful. Without new
energy and ideas it seems impossible for any service organization to
keep active and vibrant.
It is our sincere hope that the ideals and sense of purpose we
demonstrated by investing in community service for the past 66 years
will inspire others to pick up the torch and serve out towns as they
need and deserve. All in all, we are grateful for the opportunities
we have had and it has been a grand ride!
Pittsfield Hanging Flower Baskets!
Dear Pittsfield Residents, Friends and Neighbors,
Now that Spring has Sprung upon us all, we are busily preparing for
our 16th year of hanging flower baskets on the main streets of
Pittsfield!
As many of you know, this effort was started and kept going by John
Lenaerts, who sadly passed away last year.
One of John’s parting wishes was to keep our town graced with these
lovely hanging baskets!
We our honoring John’s wishes and will begin to assemble the baskets
mid May and then hang them in mid June.
The plants are purchased from Pleasant View Gardens and the baskets
are assembled, hung and maintained by volunteers.
If you appreciate the hanging baskets gracing our town and would
like to make a donation, we, through the memory of John greatly
appreciate it!
