TOPS News
Submitted By Terrie Azotea

At TOPS this past week, we had an awesome weight loss. Our Best Losers of the week were Kay and D.W. Great job ladies!

This time of the year it’s hard to stay on track...wait a minute, who are we kidding? It’s hard all year long because there is always something going on with food.

In the winter, we deal with the holidays and all the parties that go around and then in the summer we have the cook-outs. I don’t know about everyone else, but this summer I have had something going on every weekend and we all know that food is involved with it. Right? What’s a party without food? I don’t know; never been to one! That’s why it’s good to be accountable for what we are putting into our mouths. I know that facing the scales on a Tuesday night helps me.

We got our points for the first week of our new contest, the Green Beans vs. the Peaches. Good job Peaches. Keep up the good work!

Our contest consists of keeping on track with our water, exercise, food journal and weigh in. We had an auction with some nice stuff going around. We try to always have something going on that keeps us busy.

If anyone is interested in meeting new people and seeing what we are all about, come see us on Tuesday nights at the St. Stephen’s Church on Main Street in Pittsfield at 5:30 for weigh in and at 6:30 for our meeting.

Any questions please call Laurel Tiede at 269-8721 or Pat Smith at 435-5333.

Thought for the week: Why you eat and how you eat are more important than what you eat. Hope everyone has a great week and see you lighter next week!

Children’s Literacy Organization Partners With Pittsfield Elementary School For Innovative One-Year Program

The Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) has created a new literacy program called CLiF’s Year of the Book that will benefit the students of Pittsfield Elementary School and five other elementary schools in New Hampshire and Vermont over the 2012-2013 academic year.

CLiF’s Year of the Book provides more than $20,000 in children’s literacy events, support, and brand-new books to each school for one school year. In addition, every child in the participating schools will be able to select and keep 10 new books.

The program is designed to supplement existing literacy programs at schools that have a significant percentage of students who score below state standards on reading and writing tests. Schools also must have a high number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

“We are excited about this new program offered through CLiF. Our hope is that it will keep the students excited about reading and that they will continue to see the value a good reading foundation will provide throughout their lifetimes. Some of our students will be receiving their own book for the very first time! We are really delighted that this program will help us get books into the hands of the students!” said Susan Kinney, Library Program Coordinator at Pittsfield Elementary.

The new yearlong program is part of a new CLiF initiative to excite kids about reading and give them reasons to do it on their own for fun. Working directly with the students, school staff, and parents, CLiF hopes to make reading a part of each child’s everyday life.

“Until recently, CLiF offered programs on an individual basis,” said CLiF Program Director Suzanne Loring. “We hope to have a greater positive impact on children by engaging them more regularly with a variety of activities and literacy support.”

CLiF is a non-profit organization with a mission to nurture a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. CLiF has provided inspiring literacy programs and free, brand-new books to more than 130,000 low-income, at-risk and rural young readers and writers in almost 400 communities across the Twin States.

CLiF does not receive any federal or state funds for its programs. It relies solely on the generosity of individuals, local companies and foundations. To find out more about CLif or make a donation, please visit www.clifonline.org or contact CLiF Executive Director Duncan McDougall at 802-244-0944 or [email protected].
