Letter To The Editor

It’s hot and I don’t feel like going back to the wall. I’m sitting in my car with my new work dog, Nova. She was thrown in my car by my business partners in Nottingham last week along with her pocketbook. She was billed as a black lab, but I recently found out she is half pit bull, 13 weeks old I think. I’m sitting in the shade at Northwood Country Market. I could have given her away today, but didn’t.

Anyway, I already sent a letter to the editor this week about Pittsfield’s stabilized tax rate, but I got more on my mind.

First, the word on the street is there is a gang of four or five not willing to work to support their pill and cocaine habit and stealing from Pittsfield residences.

The police need to pass on the information they collect and put it in the newspaper. Example, reports of theft of tools, Catamount Rd; gas stolen, metal stolen, reports of house down the road, copper missing. These thieves are making fools out of us.

The cops are trying to do this all alone. Put stuff in the paper every week. Get Northwood police to do the same. Why are you hoarding all the information?

If you need help writing these letters, let me know.

Reward Yourself For Active Living

The Pittsfield Area Senior Center would like to thank the E. P. Sanderson Fund for purchasing pedometers to help the Center encourage active living. The pedometers will be given to people aged 55 years and above.

To be given a pedometer, interested people will be asked to log at least 24 days with 45 minute of fitness activities over 12 weeks (the 45 minutes does not need to be done all at the same time, and yes, activities such as vacuuming count!).

To document your activity you can pick up a fitness log at the Senior Center, or download the fitness log from the Town of Pittsfield website.

Two types of pedometers are available; one is compact and counts steps, the second is a bit larger and measures steps, distance, calories, speed and time. The pedometer incentive program will continue until all of the pedometers have been given away.

Remember, if it is raining or even when the sun is shining, people are welcome to walk inside Pittsfield Middle High School. During the summer PMHS is open Monday thru Friday 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Thank You!

Jon_Ward__Larry_Berkson_5-2-2012_Rotary.jpg

Rotary Club President Jon Ward presents the Pittsfield Rotary Club’s $11,000.00 donation to Larry Berkson. The contribution will be used for lighting on the new field here in Pittsfield.

On behalf of the Pittsfield Youth Baseball Association Board of Directors I would like to thank the Rotary Club for your generous donation of $11,000 to our field lighting fund. As you know, we successfully opened the new ball field this past summer and the addition of lighting will not only mark the completion of the project but will crown Pittsfield’s as one of the finest fields in all of New Hampshire.

Approximately 150 Pittsfield children participate in our programs each year and I would also like to thank you on their behalf—donations like this are critical to our existence and help to ensure these important programs will be available for the children of Pittsfield for generations to come.

We look forward to the first call of, "Play ball!" under the lights and genuinely appreciate the Rotary’s contribution to making that possible.

Sincerely,

Glenn H. Amnott, President, PYBA

Pittsfield Listens Community Connection Notes

June 21, 2012 Guest Speaker: Pittsfield Superintendent John Freeman, Ph.D

Highlights and headlines:

• Responsibility being put on students has helped them grow and participate more in their own learning.

• The schools are continuing their focus on infrastructure and administration.

• Pittsfield is using all community resources; positive attitudes are going both ways.

• Businesses, community, and schools are all connecting and working together; positive impact drawing in families.

• Pittsfield can benefit from smaller classes, re: student centered learning.

• Pittsfield is getting positive national attention!

What we learned from John Freeman:

Last summer Pittsfield Listens participants identified 9 areas for school development. While in continued development, there have been significant changes and progress in all 9 areas. These improvements include:

1. Communication

• Student led conferences have seen parent involvement increase from 10-15% to over 90%

• Alert Now system up and functioning, regular PMHS newsletter, monthly district wide website updates

2. Collaboration

• Parents and community groups; Community Advisory Council, Pittsfield Parent Connection, Pittsfield Listens

3. Accountability

• High expectations for student achievement from adults and students

4. Student centered learning

• Education being personalized through advisories, ELOs, online learning, dual enrollment

5. Curriculum

• One to one technology environment; each students has a device (laptop, iPad, netbook)

• Music position restored to half-time, Tech Ed position restored to full time, AP courses online (VLACS)

6. School and community pride

• Personalization of education, increase in NECAP scores, and recognition locally, state-wide, and nationally

7. Discipline and clear expectations for behavior

• Position analysis workshops have clarified roles and will continue to examine more roles

• Move to restorative justice; students take responsibility for their actions

8. Transitions for students

• Added activities for those in the 6th grade/7th grade transition, summer school change for new 9ths

9. Morale of administrators, teachers, students, and parents

• Students are heavily involved in decision and policy making, especially the PMHS Site Council

Needs and next steps:

• Need much more communication with the elementary school, re: activities, meetings, etc…

• What is being done for pre-K children? We need to be starting out on the right foot with all students.

• If Alert Now is open to the community, how will that be set up? When could this be done?

• More support needed for community members who are out of the school (past students, adults).

• More communication to students from students; not all information from adults, teachers, administration, etc…

Our next session in the Community Connection series:

July 19 beginning at 6:30 pm at the Pittsfield Youth Workshop. Guest Speaker: PMHS Site Council

Pittsfield Old Home Day

Saturday, July 21

• Breakfast at the Park Street Baptist Church from 7-10 am

• The usual craft fair, games, music, face painting, jump tent, dunk tank and a photo op will start at 9:00 am in Dustin Park. Simplicity, the Clown, will be on site for balloon twisting from 11-1 pm. An old fashioned "candy counter" will be there too.

• The Annual Cook Off this year is "Any Berry Or Fruit Pie". Sponsored by the Victory Workers 4-H club. Anyone and everyone is invited to bake their best "any fruit or berry pie" and bring it to Dustin Park by 9:00 am. The winners will be selected by the public by popular vote. • Time Capsule 2062 – The Pittsfield Historical Society is sponsoring a time capsule. We’d like to capture what the community of Pittsfield is in 2012 (letters, cell phone, photos, magazines and other items are in there already) and also send messages of hope and expectations to the Pittsfield Community of 2062. (Write a note or card to include!) Look for the Pittsfield Historical Society Time Capsule at OHD and add your item and/or a card to be opened in 50 years.

• Kids Bike Parade – Decorate your bike, scooter or wagon on your own (or we will have a limited supply of decorations) and be at Dustin Park at noon on OHD and join in the Kids Bike Parade. There will be prizes for the top 3 winners.

• Little Red Wagon Theatre group will perform "The Frog Prince" from 10:00-10:45 am at the Gazebo in Dustin Park. The Frog Prince is based ever so slightly on the story by The Brothers Grimm. An ordinary fairy tale kingdom finds itself under an evil spell that makes everyone, especially the princess, miserable. Luckily a good natured frog arrives just in time to break the spell and return things back to normal. Bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy the show! Appropriate for school age audiences Pre-K – grade 4.

• The annual OHD parade will begin at 1 pm. Floats are needed. Teams, organizations, clubs and classes get together and show everyone your favorite memory of the "Good Olde Summertime." Call 435-6938 to register or for more info. We do ask that candy be handed out and not thrown from vehicles

• Duck Race – Adopt a Duck for the first OHD Duck Race. The race will be held at 3 pm at the F.B. Argue Recreation Area (town pool). Tickets cost $5.00 for one duck or 3 for $10. The Duck Race is sponsored by and money raised will support the PMHS Boys Basketball Program. 500 Ducks are waiting to be adopted! Please contact Jay Darrah at 435-5272 and ducks will be available for adoption at Dustin Park on OHD prior to the parade and at the town pool until the start of the race.

• Relax at the F.B. Argue Rec Area. Along with the Duck Race, Parks and Rec will be sponsoring some old time games (water balloon toss, sack race, bean bag toss) and a pie eating contest. We’ll also have volleyball, horseshoes (we’d like to have a tournament – if anyone is willing to run it!), and sand castle building. Dance Down Memory Lane with Bill Parker. Come hear the one man band play your favorite tunes.

• A summer BBQ sponsored by the South Pittsfield Community Club will be held at the F.B. Argue Rec Area from 5:00-6:30 pm. The meal will include BBQ chicken, homemade beans and salads, dessert, watermelon, and lemonade. Tickets are available at the Town Clerk’s office – Adults-$8 and kids 12 and under -$5.

TOPS News

Submitted By Terrie Azotea

We had another weight loss this past week, which is a good thing. We are starting our new contest, "The Green Beans" against "The Peaches". Hopefully, it helps us all lose.

We have to keep a food journal and remember to drink our water and of course, get out there and do some walking or some sort of exercise. So good luck to everyone!

We had a little bit of Trivia for our meeting last week; some interesting facts and ideas on different foods. One thing that was said and I didn’t know, was you take your body weight and divide it by 2. That is the amount of water intake you should have a day.

One of our members was recognized for being a KOPS for 13 years, which is a very hard thing to do. So Kudos to you and that is something to be very proud of!

We will be having a Yard Sale the weekend of Old Home Day on Tilton Hill. So stop by and see what we have. We are also selling Raffle Tickets for a barbecue basket, which is filled with all kinds of good stuff. If anyone is interested in tickets, give us a call.

This past weekend and next weekend will be busy with cook-outs and activities with the Fourth of July being in the middle of the week, so try to make those right choices on the foods you are putting in your mouths. I know when we are camping, we are having fun and we’re not thinking about weighing in at the scales. Those chips sitting on the picnic table are calling your name, but trust me, it shows up and then you are mad at yourself. So keep that in the back of your mind and try to stay on track.

If anyone is interested in joining us, please call Laurel Tiede at 269-8721 or Pat Smith at 435-5333. We meet on Tuesday nights at St. Stephen’s Church on Main Street in Pittsfield at 5:30 for weigh in and meeting at 6:30. Stop by and see some new faces.

"Your dreams are more powerful than your doubts."

Hope everyone has a great week and see you lighter next week!
